+1

pulled over several times, never been an issue, but I don't have an "OMG LOOK AT ME!!!" attitude while driving / or loud mufflers.

I do it because after 2 smog tests in a row requiring new cats on my old 97 sierra pickup I decided to keep the expensive cats up in the rafters of my garage and run gutted or o/r mid pipes on my cars. That was so BS. They didn't just fail smog, they broke apart and started rattling and eventually completely plugged up the exhaust and made the engine misfire.

No issues here bro n I got a pretty loud exhaust..

Posted by cemelevu (Member # 10601) on :

I think I only ran around with the cats on the first week i had my car. After that it has been o/r h, then this current exhaust L/T's and mac prochamber non-catted. Never had any cop stop me to look under the car. Of course, I dont give them any reason to either.

Nope no problems here I run longtubes with x pipe on my DD but I also have my stock mufflers on I don't need to be that loud just enough so my presence is known. [Big Grin]

Funny enough, I just swapped on my stock mid-pipe for smog.

I got pulled over and given a warning for 'loud exhaust' 2 days later. (Normally I am running a catted X that is MUCH louder)

Posted by 95gtdrop (Member # 7478) on :

I plan on keeping my factory mid pipe regardless of what aftermarket one I get. Easy enough to swap out every 2 years

X2 here have my bbk x pipe on for almost 2 yrs...smog in october and the cats will be on again (just for a day) but i ran a stock pipe for years( punched out the cats) untill i got enough balls to run the x pipe....but dont do it if you cant swap your shit out yourself that just stupid to pay all that money

How much are you willing to risk?

I always drove with an o/r pipe under the car, but I'd be so damn nervous driving around whenever I saw a cop. If you're willing to risk the fine, then go for it. Just keep fingers crossed you don't run into a cop with a hard-on for busting people for every little thing - I think I remember the ticket for that is pretty pricey.

Equal length headers, Dr. Gas x-pipe, flows to the rear bumper, starting to become too loud for my DD.

I used to run long tubes with an h-pipe with out cats for a few years and never had a problem. Its not necessarily what you drive but how you drive it. [Wink]

If you get caught by city pd or chp without cats, what is the result? Ticket? Hefty fine? Trip to the referee?

I got 10-15 miles better at the end of the tank, but that could've been kuz my cats were clogged up.

I've had an officer write down " advisory loud mufflers" on a exhibition of speed ticket which turned Into racing after a few words. PS: dont argue with the police. Ended up a 30 day hold no referee though. That was with 1 3/4 bbk long tubes 2 1/2 bbk h pipe and cat back single chamber mufflers to 2 1/4 flow master chrome tail back tips. No internals just exhaust. Anyways a dd that's just looking for trouble.

And are they just going to look at it or they are going to do a full smog test.?

If the cop looks under your car and sees that you don't have cats he can fine you for no cats which is a $2,500 fine.. not really worth it.. your better off keeping 2 cats and getting 10 series flowmasters or slp loudmouth if your goal is too be really loud

I run the offroad X with 40 series and tailpipes. I want to get some of the fake cat shells or something, I dont like the idea of a $2500 fine.

Posted by 95gtdrop (Member # 7478) on :

That's why I opted out on installing the off road H. I'm just gonna run some magnapacks until I find a Catted H/X

Posted by 1993GT (Member # 7948) on :

Referees are a full on inspection deal no exceptions anything that is not stock must have eo numbers. And pass the sniffer shells are a good idea even removing plaques from legal headers but once u go to referee they will pull everything up and inspect.

I have run off road on my last 6 mustangs... NEVER once pulled over or checked for it. I don't drive stupid on the street and it seems to keep me out of trouble.

Its all in how u drive, how u act,and where u live really..I've ran O/R x mid pipes for 10+ yrs with the quietest muffler being a 2 chamber flowmaster and anything from race bullets to MAC boom tubes and built foxes to my first cobra, and only had a single reffery/exhaust ticket and that was because I was 17 and dumb reving at a red light at my boy so I asked for it,didn't see the chp bike cop in the gas station lol,but I'm diehard and could GAF less about authority trying to sabotage my hobby an passion, there's way more problems in this state then my x pipe [Wink] [burnout]

Maybe SS396 Chevelle is right about the full smog and db test..Five years ago I got a ticket for modified exhaust..I went to the referee and he did a db test and signed the paper that it passed and he didn't tell me he had to smog it but again this was five years ago.I don't know about today's new laws..
