I'm wondering what kind of gas mileage you guys are getting with 4-cylinder foxbodies. With gas prices nowadays, my idea of a green sn95 v8 fell through and now I'm on the hunt for a 4-banger fox (or an mk2 jetta [Big Grin] ). I know I can get a Honda or Toyota but I'd rather get a Foxbody 4-cyl. I'm mostly concerned what your mpg's are for city driving. Thanks [patriot]

Just as much as my 5.0

On a serious note if you are really down for the MPG's go honda civic motherfuckers would take you to Mexico N back on $20.

If you want something reliable w good mpg go with a Honda. The 4cyl are buckets

Don't really want a Honda though. I got a 2010 accord that the wife drives. I just need something to ride around town in since I work 5 mins from home.

+1 on Honda Civic

I got a 2000 Civic LX and I average 31-33 MPG combined City/Hwy

Not looking for speed or performance either. I have my 98 cobra to go fast in.

For a cheap beater, you really can't do much better than a 90's Honda Civic, CRX, or Del Sol... Or a mid to late 90's Toyota Corolla, Camry, or Celica...

If you want something a little more upscale, a 90's Acura Legend or 90's Lexus ES300 are great for the money

You really can't go wrong with Honda and Toyota... They're some of the most reliable and fuel efficient cars of their time... not to mention cheap insurance, cheap parts, simple maintenance, and good resale value.

If a Honda or Toyota is absolutely out of the question for some reason, a Diesel VW Golf/Rabbit is an option... I'd also consider a 90's Miata over a 4-cyinder Fox...

18-25 on an auto... maybe a couple more on the 5 speed. Based on a good running car of course.

I don't get why someone would want to drive a 4cyl foxbody. It's a piece of shit, might as well have a fast one. That's the only redeeming factor of a foxbody, it's potential.

Just get a Saturn. Very cheap and great mpg.

Well, its like asking,"why would someone want to drive a 84 Toyota?" Because they want to. Trust me, I have a "fast" car, I have an SUV, and I have a Honda, so I know what options are out there and I know what I need. True, the 4-cyl fox won't get as good of mpg's as a Honda Civic or a Toyota Celica, but I just need a cheap beater that "looks" good to drive around town.

I had a 97 Saturn. It got stolen in front of my parents house and recovered in Oakland. I posted pics of it a while back...used to be black, all stock, very clean. When it was recovered it was two-toned rattle can blue and black, with fucked up interior. Cops said that Saturns were just as hot as hondas and acuras because they're so easy to get into. [Embarrassed]

Cheap
Easy to work on
Plenty of Parts available (New/Used)
Can easily be converted to V8
And I wouldn't be caught dead driving some FWD Import POS.

To the OP, if you can handle them being dogshit slow, with barely enough power to get out of it's own way, they get great mileage when you drive them like a little old lady. My buddy had an all stock '91 AOD coupe n/a 4banger and said it was pretty scary getting on onramps sometimes. He said it made a big difference when he swapped it out for a manual though lol.

looks like the 4 bangers got 3 MPG better than a 5.0. 19 vs 16 around town.

If you drive 5000 miles a year in it, you use:

4CYL 263 gallons @ 4 dollars a gallon = $1052 per year

8CYL 312 gallons @ 4 dollars a gallon = $1248 per year

You will save roughly $16.66 a month by driving a much slower car...

If its a cheaper initial price that is driving you towards a 4 banger, go for it, but if it is gas savings you wont see too much of a difference.

Well shit, good looking out bro lol! But would that 4 banger really only get 19 mpg??

i was thinking of a commuter too until someone did the same thing for me, its amazing how little you save...

according to this site and any other ones I looked up, its 19 around town and 26 freeway and the 5.0s are 16 around town and 23 around the freeway.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/7600.shtml

People automatically assume that you get better MPG with a smaller motor, but it has more to do with hp/tq to weight. Put a small motor in a heavy car is it has to work its ass off and rev way out... put a powerful motor in a heavy car and it works a lot less. that's why a lot of the 6 cyclinders they are making now get such good MPG, cause they are smaller than a v8, but still big enough to actually push the car around

This all works if you can keep from modding 5.0. But who wants to leave it stock? I bought a clean cheap 4cyl that will eventually be converted to a 5.0. Until then, it will save fuel and wear and tear on my truck.

I'm tellin ya, get something lightweight, japanese, and efficient.

the 90's Toyota MR2 and Mazda Miata are 2,100-2,400lbs, and come with small 1.6L-2.0L DOHC engines that make more that 110hp. I think by the mid 90's. both cars were making 130hp.

Most of the 4-banger foxes are like 2,700+lbs and only make 88hp@3800rpm... out of a 2.3L SOHC

And I don't see how a 4-banger fox looks "cool". I'd much rather have a clean 92+ Civic hatchback that's better in pretty much every single way possible.

-Power
-Handling
-Brakes
-Interior room and design
-storage capacity
-fuel efficiency
-Reliability
-resale value
-build quality (appearance and mechanical)
-cheaper and more plentiful parts

the only upside to a 4-banger fox is RWD and the ease of doing a V8 swap. But neither of those things matter if you have a fast Mustang at home.

Civic's best all around commuter and city car. I have an 05 Civic coupe I get 38 city, and around 43-45hwy mpg. I do all my oil changes and other maintenance on time(fluid levels, tire pressure, filter check). Best economy In my book.
