How do you tow your NON-OP race car legally? I called DMV this morning for options, so far they said to get a one day moving permit. I replied that its a race car and I move it a lot,and why cant I put it as an recreational vehicle, like an ATV. DMV replies that they will look into it more and call me back. Does anybody have any ideas?

When I had my car like that and it wa on the trailer the cops never messed with me.

Why do you have to register it at all? I guess being an out of state resident, I don't understand the reasoning behind registering a race car besides the state sucking money from every place they can.

Nothing needed if on a trailer,
As long as all four wheels are off the ground you are good to go,
You can not use a tow dolly legally as the rear wheels will be on the ground.

Don't even bother with them, I've been towing mine for years no problem. I'm not paying them anymore than I already do, that's why I have a race car.

I used my enclosed but if you go to Tracy DMV and get the right lady she will let you register it for off road use.

I did this with the south carolina car that I bought off of 1slowlx when I sold it.

You know the kid since he comes by your house now......they let him bring it back to street use too....

Tim has the correct answer- if any wheels are touching the road, it needs to be registered. That being said, if it's being towed with a registered tow dolly, it would be unlikely that you would get cited.

It costs nothing to keep the car as a NON-OP but still having it registered help prove the car is legally mine if there ever was an issue.

there should be no problem if the car is yours if your making money from towing it then you would need a motor carrier permit well at least on a tow truck you do

Just tow it! As mentioned above, as long as the wheels are on any public highway, there is nothing to worry about.

however for such a small amount owed, why not just pay the money plus $10.00 to keep it in an indefinite non-op?

I just wondering since it said I couldn't tow it on the renewal, I didn't know I could legally tow it with the trailer as long as the wheels didn't touch the pavement.

Like stated above, you legally cannot have 4 wheels on the ground when towing (stupid IMO). My friend was towing his unregistered 240sx to the track and a cop pulled him over because the car had all 4 wheels on the ground when it wasn't registered. As long as it is being towed with the front/rear tires off the ground you're good to go.

Didnt see that it was already on a non-op so scratch the pay the fees comment. however the towing with a trailer (ALL wheels off the ground) is still ok!

On another note, many major tow companies such as any AAA affiliate companies WILL NOT tow your car when it is out of reg or on a non-op, even if it going on a flat bed.
