I'm looking to get a hand gun to go have fun at the range and home protection. I was looking at the Bersa 22 and 38 Thunder series. (it's a modern copy of 007's ppk) what are the opinions?Recommendations for a noob? 22, 38, 9mm? This would be my first gun. I was also thinking of going to a range to rent some before I buy. I've never shot a gun before. I just don't want something I'll get bored with in 5 mins either.

atleast go 9mm to start! I love my Beretta 92FS, fun to shoot and easy to field strip for cleaning. Also have a Kimber .45 TLE/RL II that is awsome and looks badass!! But atleast rent a few different guns to see what fits good in your hand(s) then go from there! Lets us know what you decide!! [patriot]

I had a PPK. Sold it. They are pretty accurate, but are kind of uncomfortable to shoot. It would bruise the web of my hand every single time I shot it.

Can't go wrong with a 92FS. Great guns, 9mm is cheap and if you want to take your lady shooting, it will be a nice soft shooting gun for her.

since it ur first gun go 9mm so if something happens at ur home u have a few rounds to play with. its cheaper to shoot and every place in ca has 9mm rounds. i dont know how much you want to spend or if you looking to buy new. but springfield has a bad ass new 9mm. its a target gun and will be a great gun andw ill hold value. check it out http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/56442

There is absolutely not a better pistol in the world than a Sig Saurer P226 !

If you like that but would like something smaller in caliber that's also more affordable go with the Sig Saurer Mosquito

Glock 23 FTW!!!!

This question gets asked quite a bit, go to a range try some out, comfort price etc., don't be CHEAP, try looking into at least a 9mm or in my opinion a .40. As far as manufacturers most people will tell you Sig Sauer or Glock so those are good starting points. One thing to consider is will you be the only one using the weapon or will the wife gf kids etc. also train on it? I've been shooting for about 25 years and have had a number of bad and good weapons in my day so don't rush into making a purchase, for my money Sig 226 or Glock 19/23 would be the way to go.

Also, don't shoot your eye out!

Go try a few out! That would be a good idea!!!! Everyone has a personal preference but you need to decide for yourself! I love glocks and 1911 style handguns. I just picked up a RIA 1911 45 on wed and put 350 rounds through it yesterday with not one mis feed or jam. Good luck let us know what you get.

this gun just came out also. it comes with a bigger clip also. its around 600-700 depending where you find it. it is just bad ass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR9LOuL8aYI

I just started looking at the guns and there are so many models out there it gets overwhelming. I'm looking between $200-$400 and want a new one which is why bersa caught my attention. I did read about the pinching that the ppk does on your hand. Sounds stupid bit I was liking the nostalgic look to the gun. My wife also wants to shoot it too so it needs to be something she can handle as well. Sounds like the 9mm is the way to go? Seemed like a lot of people recommend the 22lr for beginners.

The XDM line up is solid , there is alot going on with them . good reviews too. The price is comparible to that of glock. The only thing is which I just found out is that the XDM 9mm isnt for sale in Ca due to its 19+1 mag , thats too bad. Sucks because I really wanted one.

You should look into these.

^ They make a great gun and it's in your price range [Wink] I would pick a revolver for a home protection gun over a auto pistol..... In a stressful time like a break in, Just pull the trigger untill they stop moving.

Then definitely don't get a PPK type gun. I bought mine for my wife and she HATED it. She shot it once and never shot it again in the two years I owned it.

I am a big Sig fan. For $400 you probably can't get any of the metal frame guns for that, but you can get a brand new 2022 for that much. They're a great polymer Sig for a low costt.

Revolvers are cool. I want a reg pistol fir my first gun. I see that Taurus has some good reviews on their pt92 which is in the price range. Where are some good ranges that I can rent a few different guns?

Again if it's for the wife also make sure you both check out some weapons first, also again I stress to not buy cheap, more moving parts cheaper quality and crappy mags lead to malfunctions! For the price range you are talking about do a lot of shopping and checking first because you are definitely on the lower end of the scale!

On a side note check out places like Old Sacramento Armory often times they have used and agency trade in weapons for lower prices. With a weapon like a Glock even if it's been used you won't run into any problems.

My Glock 23, one of my favorite weapons that I own, I've shot the hell out of it and I just had a guy at the range offer to by it off of me. They last and they work.

Check out the Gun Room in Elk Grove they sell guns have a range and rentals as well as classes.

The first handgun I bought was a walther p22 if you don't mind knowing you are gonna upgrade in the future it would be a great first gun. About 15$ for 500 rounds can't be beat with the 22lr where usually with 9mm your looking at 15-20$ for 50rds. you'll get alot more shooting in with the 22lr, I ultimately upgraded to a xd9 and love it though just don't shoot as much [Smile]

A Ruger MK3 is the quintessential gun to learn on and enjoy for many years. 10rd semi-auto all metal .22lr that's very accurate. Many long time gun guys still shoot the MK3's or other .22lr quite a bit. 500rds is about $20 and it will kill someone if needed.

Next is either a 9mm or .38spl. Both of these are fairly cheap to shoot and pack enough punch to defend yourself with. For simple, accurate, reliable, $500 will get you a nice new glock or cz75. Both are accurate, good to take to the range, and can defend you.

I personally like to shoot revolvers as they are very accurate and have great triggers. A fullsize N frame with 4-6" barrel will be far more accurate than the auto's. You can switch between .357 mag and .38spl in any .357 revolver. That way you can shoot .38 at the range and save money and then load .357mag for home defense. These revolvers will shoot out to 100+ yards on a man size target all day long. .357 magnum is about twice as powerful as .45acp

The most accurate, best handling "cheap" guns would be the glock 34, Cz75b, or CZ shadow. If your set on an auto 9, don't get anything less than a 5 inch barrel. It will be far more accurate and much nicer to shoot.

i got a bersa 45 and i love it. It's very compact but pretty accurate for having a 3-1/2" barrel. I've shot a bunch of rounds through it and never jams. Add hollow tips and i say its very good for home protection. lol.. The postives for a 9 mm, bullets are very cheap

Dude ... comparing a .357 to a 45acp is like comparing apples and oranges. The 45 has tremendous stopping power while a .357 has extreme penetration power . And for home defense a .357 magnum is not ideal in the least bit . Have you ever fired a weapon in a house hold ? I have , at an intruder . And it was only a .22 lr and that itty bitty round went through my living room and into my garage (penetrated one wall) and stopped in a freezer . So if a 22 lr can do that you could imagine how many walls .357 mag would go through.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll be heading to the range first. If I need to raise my budget, that's fine. Just have to save up a little extra. I'm not too concerned on bullet cost since chances are that I won't go to the range very often. That's a big difference in prices though. I read a lot about stopping power but if you can't handle the gun, missing your target is not going to help stop anyone. Im sure a well placed 22 would do the trick too. I may have to wait till tax time anyway so plenty of time to research and try stuff out. My mistress (aka mustang) has been taking all my play money lately!

walther p22. nice little gun can be had for about $500. since its a 22lr ammo is dirt cheap. about $9 at walmart for 100 rounds of the good shit. which you should use in this gun. people tend to have jaming problems with the cheap stuff, but walther recomends good cci ammo and i have never had a problem with mine.

.22 is the way to go if you want something fun to shoot. for about $40 bucks of ammo you can shoot for few hours.

for your price range and you want an auto loading pistol id keep an eye on some of the S&W M&P models as they go on sale a lot http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category3_750001_750051_757781_-1_Y
Or look at Sac Black Rifle they get a lot of low use Glock trade -ins. seriously go and try a few out before buying if you have the means near by.and for god sakes buy a full size pistol if you plan on hitting the range a lot.

My recommendation would be a Springfield XD in either a .40 or a .45.

Posted by BLK35th (Member # 4685) on :

For range fun, I would go with a ruger Mark series. They take any .22lr you throw in them without problems. I have had mine for a while now. This is the best gun for range fun, ammo is cheap and the perfect gun to learn it does get boring after a while though. Its gone through 3,000+ rounds, without any issues. For Home protection......nothing does it better than a 12 guage pump.

.357 is more powerful in every way than .45acp. You could load any .357 revolver with your choice of .38spl and it would be close to 9mm power if you wanted less. .22lr can go through many inches of plywood also, what's your point? Should the poster get a pellet gun?

For the OP, Try a bunch of guns (Bullseye in Marin has a good selection) I'd go with a 5" gun, shoot a few sizes and see what you like.

Posted by fstryde3 (Member # 8436) on :

Reading all these posts and OP's idea I'm wondering why people keep talking about 22LR? I mean yeah cheap bullets and available everywhere but so is 9mm. Honestly like most people say go shoot and try things out but people saying 22LR is the way to go for a first gun is like telling people who are looking into a Mustang that you have to start with a V6. You are right well placed rounds are more effective then large caliber rounds that miss but I gotta tell ya in my house if there were to be an intruder last thing I'm reaching for is my Ruger 10.22.

Imo you can't go wrong with a 1911. It was the first gun I ever shot and I've been a fan ever since. There's a reason its been a utilized weapon by the military and law enforcement for so long...

If you like revolvers you can look for SMITH & WESSON'S model 60{.38cal},model 19 {shoots wide range of rounds .38 .38+p .357 .357 magnum}, model 29 is a .44 magnum not for the faint of heart this one is my favorate [dance] I bought these to start with and my addiction to guns is worse than haroine If you like the houge look of moddern guns I would look at a KIMBER RAPTOR 1911{higher end} You can never go wrong with a COLT 1911 in .45 acp cal I just picked up a GSG 1911 in .22 cal and it acts identical to my COLT 1911 I reload and cast all of my own ammo so its super cheap to go out and run thruogh 1500 rounds a session. STAY AWAY FROM THE TAURUS BRAND THAY ARE ABSOLUTE JUNK SHOOT LIKE SHIT AND DONT HOLD ANY VALUE

If ur looking for a super reliable gun and pretty Damn accurate gun for an awesome price, look at the ruger p95. It's a great first gun and can be had for 350 or cheaper. I bought my p95dc (decocker only, no safety) used off of calguns.net private sales. I got it with 250 rounds, 2 mags and a locking case for 250 bucks. It's easy to disassemble and clean, fun to shoot, big gun for a 9mm which makes accuracy. The trigger pull takes some getting used to, but its awesome when u get used to it. It's double action, and has taken every type of cheap ammo I could feed it, including reloads. The sights are more than adequate, although I put a green front sight on mine. The newer ones come with an accessory rail. I use mine to protect my house and my mustang, and I always practice with it so I'm good with it. Ruger makes some of my favorite guns and I like that prices aren't through the roof on everything. It is a hammer firing pistol, but if u want a striker fire the ruger sr9 is awesome and I personally like them just as much as glock 17s, and are way less expensive than glocks. Regardless of what u get enjoy it. Everyone has their own feel to a particular gun

I love my Glock 30 it's a .45 love the bark it's one of the loudest on the range usually but Glock 9 is cheaper to shoot rounds are expensive of you want to just target shoot buy a .22 they are fun cheap and target shooting is a blast shoot all day compared to $20 for only 50 rounds on my .45

If you want something for home defense you probably want a bigger caliber gun like a 40 or 45 they will have the stoping power you need , as far as price you can get a 1911 right now for little over $400 and the price for the rounds are not bad also

You can get a cheap philipine made Rock Island 1911 for that much...... But you can't even touch a name brand 1911 like Kahr, colt, Kimber, Taurus , ruger or Wilson combat for any less than $850... I wouldn't mess with the cheap shit.
