There's a couple of Bay Area Ferret rescue groups. Check them out. They're really just looking to see they go to a good home.
Take it from someone who used to have ferrets. They're awesome pets, but they're very mischevious and have to be watched constantly. Also, they stink. Even when they've been de-scented, they still have a very musky skunk-like smell.

They are illegal, and can get a nice fine if caught with them.
They are awesome pets but not for inexperienced pet owners. would not recomend if you have small children.
I do believe there is a ferret rescue in the fremont east bay area.
