Anyone else have to give presentations to large groups of people? I've just started and damn I feel like my heart is going to bust out of my chest I get so nervous. I need to take a public speaking course for sure. Any remedies or tips? Other than the usual picture everyone naked because that is ridiculous lol

I usually go into a presentation with a "its whatever" attitude. It make me calm down and not get as nervous. If I start to think about it I tend to get totally nervous and end up stumbling all over my words. When I begin to think its no big deal, I tend to relax and giving a better presentation.

Think of everyone else being normal and yourself being the specialist. Just remember no matter what they are normies and you are the professional.

When in Uni, I joined Toastmasters. It really helped me get over my fear of public speaking. Which is weird because I only afraid when I am trying to pitch something (like when I do our proposals or speak at events like MAX).

Check it out, helped me a lot.

Been doing this a good part of my life so nothing bad for me but I'd say just practice and don't worry about it they are there to listen to you.

I like to definitely rehearse/record my speech before the big day to find where I would have trouble.

Have a few drinks. That will mellow you out.

+1 im taking a public speaking class.
1. If u can get the audience to laugh, then it calms u down a lot(if the topic permits)
2. Dont look the audience in the eyes, look at their foreheads..they cant tell and u dont get all nervous by looking at them straight in the eyes

great advice. my wife joined toastmasters about 6 months ago and she likes it a lot. shes getting better with speaking in public and confronting her fear.

the one thing that has worked for me and what i suggest to people is to slow everything down one notch while you're speaking. things will come out clearer, smoother, and you will fumble less with your words. the key thing is to know what you're talking about, meaning know your subject well. once you start flowing, you will tend to feel more at ease after a few minutes. if you don't know what the hell you're talking about, you just become more aware of your BS presentation and things will likely fall apart. like someone mention, you're the expert.

of course, it's easier said than done. we all get nervous one time or another. try to have fun with it.

as already stated toastmasters is a good start to get more comfortable giving presentations and really the only way to get over the nervousness and anxiety you just need more "seat" time and exposure to feeling uncomfortable. we've all been through it and eventually you'll get comfortable speaking in a large setting.

in college, they sort of prep you for this by having you take some presentation courses but if you're on the extreme side where your anxiety is killing it, it will just take a lot more practice to get to the point where you can present w/ confidence.

dont worry abuot it so much, just get yourself out there and ull eventually get over it.

I had a few marketing classes where I had to speak in front of large groups, theses are some things that had me feel more comfortable.

1. know your topic really well
2. learn from others that go before you, how they present there topics
3. speak calm and clear, if you go too fast you might get yourself nervous

I'am the master of presentations! [Wink]
I do presentations to groups of 50-100 once a week (marketing for Comcast). It's all in the preparation. Make sure that you're fully eduacated on what you're presenting, and also be prepared for what questions will come up (think about what you would ask).

Consider these few things:

- Focus on keeping your back straight, as this shows confidence (people tend slouch)
- Remember that you're the person in charge and don't get distracted by side chatter
- Don't make eye contact (as mentioned above, look at people's foreheads)
- Don't stand still, walk side to side
- Focus on not talking too fast, and keep a steady pace instead

Use your nervousness to get excited about your presentation. Check out the link below on a few breathing excercises to help you with your stage fright. Good luck!
