Came across a deal i couldnt pass up and got new interior for the car. Came with seats, carpet, headliner, door panels, kick panels and a new dash. Me and Chavez66 put it all in yesterday, well i started on monday but we did the final touches yesterday. I think it came out pretty good and ive always wanted pony interior. The only issue i ran into is that when we bolted down the center console, the shifter boot kinda bunches up and i have to pull on the shifter hard to go to 1st gear(these consoles were designed with the 4 speed). Should i just change the boot? Anyways, heres some pics
UPDATE: well i got some more stuff for the interior after buying the seats and all. And took out the dash to install some blue L.E.D. dash lights. THE PICS DO NOT DO JUSTICE FOR THE DASH!! Anyways, when i was taking it out i accidentally barely hit the gas gauge and broke it. Bought a new one and the needle is at 3/4 since yesterday?? I numbered all the wires when i took out the cluster but maybe made a mistake? Faulty gauge?
Heres some more pics
This little shit is expensive

Looks good bro! You making me want an old school bad.
Trying pulling off the shifter boot and put it in first. If everything seems fine, relocate the boot a little to give you more slack when throwing it in first.

Looking good, you need to get some pony door handles now. Mustangs plus sells them for like $3 each on clearance at the swap meets.
I just leave my shifter boot unbolted. The console will keep the boot in place for the most part.
Speaking from experience... watch out for those metal pieces in the middle of those seats on hot days. They will brand the hell out of your back leaving a nice welt.

The handles are 3? I looked them up in mustangs plus and theyre 25 each. And yea as for the boot i think ill move the console a little to the left and hopefully that will work too

Yea, that's why you need to hit their clearance bins at swap meets. They are usually at the goodguys shows in Pleasanton. They are "blemmished" pieces but who really cares for a car thats a driver? Remember you have to buy the handle and the backing plate for the handle too.
How are you going to move the console? It's screwed to the floor.

Nope, just lay down the carpet. It comes in 2 pieces, ur just gonna have to cut the excess carpet on the sides and position it correctly. Not too hard just meticulous

Cool thanks. Hopefully I can get a good deal on a carpet like you did.

The kit is convenient but $40 bucks seems kinda steep for a couple LED bulbs. I was thinking sourcing ebay for the bulbs, getting some cheap china knockoff ones. I cant find a reference part# off the regular old bulbs though.
Hey, goodguys is in Pleasanton this weekend. You might be able to get those door handles at the Mustangs Plus booth. Last time I checked them out at the show they had pony kits for the kickpanels. The lower carpet and trim pieces.

yea i know it was pricy but if it helps my numbers said "wf GE 1895"
And man i couldnt wait i bought the handles already and the actual mechanism too because the pony interiors have a longer shaft to clear the door panels

Your looking at $30 each new for the light assembly. Maybe $10 each used at a swap meet. The wiring harness is like another $30 but you could just make the harness yourself using some automotive wire. It just splices into your doorjamb switch. They pony steering wheels are pretty cool too. But they are pricey.

Ok ill look into it. And i think im gonna go with a mahogany steering whell from Grant

I gotta agree on the old skool note. no matter what, you have way more fan base with an old skool.no smog which i know doesnt matter to some. but all i do is pay my registration every year and im not viewed as just another punk in a mustang getting pulled over for no reason.

btw that bulb your looking for is a standard part number 1895 most stores will stock it. if you need more then four id go to a higher quality store like napa, carquest etc. where a they will stock boxes and a box will be almost as much as 2 packs of 2 at kragen.

That's what I love about my 66 bro, every time I pass by a Chp or cop "most of the time going faster than I should" they usuAlly just smile and give me the thumbs up haha. But when I drive my cobra going 5 miles under the speed limit the cops jus give me dirty looks

+1 never been pulled over in my mustang. Even when I was running open headers on the street. Classics seem to get more respect with the cops. When I had my 5.0 I would get pulled over each time drove it.

Yea I think in general everyone gives respect to the old skools because most people know WhT it takes to build them and maintain them. Ey secnd2nun64 I'm in the process of doing a 9 inch in ma 66 what can u tell me about yours, don't know much about this swap and am learning as I go. I want to do it right the first time u know
Posted by Secnd2nun64 (Member # 1431) on
:
Yeah, I got a new crate rear from currie and a used center chunk. It is nodular iron lim slip unit with 3.50 gears. I run 31 splines axles and 11" drums.
My reasoning for buying the currie is that a used housing that will fit the car right w/o modification is rare (57-59 Ford)and will cost you $500 or so and those most likely will have 28 spline axles. So by the time you get new axles which are around $300 and new seals $80 your in it the same price as a new crate one. Plus then your working with new parts that are not 50 yrs old.
A lincoln versailles will fit too but your locating pins on the spings may not match up to the springs, bad gearing plus the housing is a little bit wider.
On the 9 inch, you will have to fab up new brake lines as your 8 inch lines wont fit. You may also need a new driveshaft. I lucked out on mine when I did the swap since my driveshaft was still the correct length. I just had to change the u-joint because the cap size was different.
Are you planning to run enough power to need a 9"? Doing the swap is not cheap and the 8" is a pretty strong rear, especially if you have the WAR case center section. I only changed my 8" because I wanted to run slicks. What type of gears you have right now?
Posted by Chavez66 (Member # 9812) on
:
well i have a 331 stroker in mind but that is really far from now, i have an HCI 302 around 3 sumthin rear wheel so its really not that much power. this is just the second time i mess up an 8 inch, but they were both stock rear ends so i can see why they didnt hang. i guess an 8 inch rear end is enough if i really beef it up, what would you recomend for rebuilding the one i have? i just dont want to have to go through this again you know
Posted by Secnd2nun64 (Member # 1431) on
:
What are you breaking on the 8"?
Posted by Chavez66 (Member # 9812) on
:
Well the first one was a on a hard take off, the third member snapped and broke
Posted by Secnd2nun64 (Member # 1431) on
:
Well, the 8" has two diffent style third member housings. One is the standard web and the other is a cross web style like whe WAR case. The cross web is much stronger. Which one do you have?
Standard
WAR style
If your interested I have the WAR style cases from my 8" in a 3.00 gear set and a 3.55 gear set. Both are open carriers. They use a 1310 u joint with the larger caps and have the pinion guard on the pinion support.
Posted by Chavez66 (Member # 9812) on
:
Ok yea both of my rear ends that have broke were the standard style, that war one looks reinforced for shur. Yea I'm interested in one with the 3.55 what u looking to get for it?
Posted by Secnd2nun64 (Member # 1431) on
:
I'll send you a PM.
Posted by v-town coupe (Member # 2771) on
:
yeah I've never had any issues using a WAR case'd 8" id def. go that route. but when it comes time to do rear brakes they make a conversion kit to use cobra calipers and rotors on the the rear. its inexpensive, works great! and keep in mind if you convert your 8" to rear disc the parts can also be used on a small bearing 9" OR if you go big bearing 9" you will have to re-buy the brackets but at least you will have the majority of the brake parts. I recently did this to the 67 but i got some 2-piece rotors to match the front and had to make the rear calipers match the front as well. btw www.streetortrack.com makes all the brackets etc. and even has a kit to allow you to use your stock e-brake with the new disc brake setup out back.
heres a rear pic:

Yup I tried avoiding running it over kuz I wasn't in the mood to run one over so I swerved left to avoid it but I guess he wanted to turn back from where he came so blap he ended up my tire. It was a huge raccoon it didn't do any damage but put blood everywhere its nasty hearing it all the bones crack LOUD. I also once took a squirrel out the game to I was at malibu grand prix here in Redwood City and one tried running by quick but I was fuck that I aint slowing down n blap blood got on my leg shit was nasty.
Posted by Chavez66 (Member # 9812) on
:
Yea I'm thinking of doing the disk brake conversion while I'm at it
Posted by crazyhorse (Member # 5662) on

I had to upgrade on a budget. Luckily found a 8 inch 67 (WAR) center here with an open 4.10 ratio. Didn't want one leggers so I bought the powertrax lockrite locker. I'm easily over 350 hp and it holds up like a champ.

I just got back from the bodyshop after seeing the cars one week progess and its crazy when i first got there i was looking for my car and didnt recognize it at first glance because it was sanded all the way down! I knew that i would have to get a passenger side door because the guy who owned the car before me wanted pop-open door and shaved the door handle. In doing so they welded it to where it would be a waste of time to try to mess with it. Although, there were a few surprises, underneath all the primer was a TON of bondo and cover up a lot of things. On the roof in particular are holes scattered around and even though its bad, it will be able to be repaired. Also, my driver side door appears to have cancer in the lower left side, since he hasnt sanded it down yet were not sure but the best bet looks like it would be to pick up a used door. Its inevitable that there will be surprises on these old skools but its worth it. Here are progress pics after one week, since we all know how much CA Fords LOVES pics.
This was an attempt at welding from a previous owner
Some of the surprises on the roof
The weld job that was done to shave off the door handle

You got yourself a nice project there.
Dont skimp and think/plan everything you want to do metal wise.(fenders rolled, maybe a mini tub, subframes...)now is the time to get it all out of the way.
Good Luck.

Haha its funny that you mention that because i did hit those brackets! Well i dont plan on rolling the fenders, i do want a mini tub and all but just wont be able to. I mean ideally now IS the best time to do it but i just dont have the resources to do so.

When i took out the old carpet and put it the new stuff, the floor boards looked solid except the passenger side. There is a very tiny section that had minute rust..i just sprayed it with primer. The roof was just a surprise to me, at least i know the car is getting taken care of.

Second coat of primer is on! i know you guys are probably tired of seeing just the shell but the fiberglass parts should be here hopefully in 2 weeks. Also, there might be a change of plans and i want to do the fully adjustable coil overs for the front. that will definately set it back for paint. Pros would be more space, better steering geometry and better handling however one of the reviews says it's closer to a full race set-up rather than a street set-up. Better priced than some and superior to a mustang II set-up but others still liked the TCP set-up better.

If you find some let me know Daniel
Jim meyer just came out witha setup recently as well. Dont go RRS if you want that style go with gateway clasic mustang. they took the RRS design and improved upon it. that and with RRS they use an odd ball gto hub assembly that is only available in aust.only. and you have to use there brake setup where gateway uses an sn 95 style hub assembly and baer brakes. havent had a chance to drive my car but we'll see how it goes. The AJE kit looks cool but even with good welding I dont like the welding 4 sleeves in your frame and those four sleeves will have the four bolts holding your front suspension and motor in the car. keep in mind with AJE or RRS style you can only notch the towers you have to keep the top as the mounting point for the coil over struts. only way to get rid of them all together is to go mustang 2 and there is no straight answer there. theres still lots of controversy there.
another option is cortex if you want to dump about $10k just in your front end!LOL
also talk to shaun over at Street Or Track he makes nice stuff and he does all his own R&D

ill see if i can find one of the pics i have with the 13" 2-piece rotor on. this is the Gateway kit. I was skeptical about going strut but it seemed to allow the most lowering without affecting ride to bad. and two years back their car placed 7th out of 50 cars that came out to run optima ultimate street car challenge.

another thing to consider even if they were cool people to deal with. is Autoworks buys all there parts from a lot of manufactures(they really dont make a lot of parts in house)also they are in CA and well Sales Tax could be hefty on a couple $1000.00 purchase.

Im going for the same combo..the blue but with black Le Mans stripes. But I cant find any 66 mustangs with this color combo. I found these that kind of look like it. The year one car says it actually is Azure Blue but it looks way too light. It could be the lighting but I dont know..

Im not too sure I havent measured it but I would say it is about 1.5-2 inches at the tallest part of the bump. Yes I think the GT350 scoop is too small appearance wise and also it does look a bit smaller than the one in the picture. I should've measured them side by side before I sold the 350 hood.

It's a cool looking hood. Looking forward to seeing it with some paint on it. I don't know if you thought about it but shaving that center body line down the middle of that scoop would give it a different look too. Are you going to run hood pins? Looks like it has a good fit right out of the box.

Thanks man I had to bug Mustangs Plus for this hood and always liked it. I personally havent seen any 66 Mustangs with this hood. I actually didn't even think about shaving that line down, it doesn't look bad.
I don't want to run hood pins but might have to since the hood is fiberglass, for now im keeping the latch.
Well you said it right, it "looks" like it fits good haha, its fiberglass it has to be messed with a bit.

Haha dammit now youre putting pressure on me! Well that's the plan, there's just a few more miscellaneous things to do then its the moment of truth! But yes it has been a long time, and it will be worth the wait.
I have to find out whether or not the 03-04 Mach 1s had the satin black portion sprayed or if it was a decal

those torque thrust "M" wheels hes running are pretty cheap too they are under $200 a wheel.
Posted by 66_5.0 (Member # 9974) on
:
They have them in 18x10? I read on his site somewhere that he was running 18x10s all the way around. Those M wheels I saw in Mustangs Plus in 17x8 with the correct offset for my car. They are clean!
Posted by v-town coupe (Member # 2771) on
:
i think they do make an 18x9 and an 18x10 which should be fine if you run his same tire combo.I think hes running 265/35/18 all the way around. Mike Maier doesnt keep everything hush hush you can call or email him and he'll tell you what tire,bs,width etc he's running BUT im pretty sure he had the wheel lips rolled in all 4 corners.if you didnt mini tub hopefully you had your lips rolled to squeeze as much tire as you can under the factory sheetmetal on that car.
want to also add that mike is running some very Aggressive suspension on that car so I'm pretty sure thats how he got away with the tire size hes running due to the fact the car doesnt shift causing tire rub if that makes sense? basically the contact points to the pavement(wheels/tires) maintain the same relationship to the body at all times where as a leaf spring will sway left to right etc.

Yea it makes sense, Im almost positive that rear suspension hes running is about 7k? Its crazy and evidently putting that much work into the suspension definately has its advantages.
Posted by v-town coupe (Member # 2771) on

that rear suspension isnt $7k its only $6k. LOL
I'll pass its nice but i think im going to go tcp g-bar kit. price is right it will do a million times better then stock and you can run tail pipes

Hahaha..damn my bad bro Im off by 1000. It is a badass kit, yet I would no way be able to dish out 6k at this time!
But yea I definately have to do suspension...I just underestimated on how much it really cost. This is my FIRST project so Im still new at it.

Yea he pulled it and all the little stuff out too. He's definately doing some extra little things that will go a long way.
Just like I told him to cover up the hole for the antenna and he did a good job on it. Just wanted it a little different

Cars looking real good! What type of radio are you running in the dash? I saw some extra holes in there. Have you thought about going back to original? They sell repair panels for the radio for like $6. I know you got it sprayed but it's something to think about while the car is not together.
Also noticed those springs on your hood, are those the stock springs? If they are take them off. You'll need low tension springs and a hood prop or your hood may break or bow.

Secnd2nun64: Thanks man this particular journey is almost over haha! Im actually going to go with a nice Alpine deck and get rid of those holes.
Also, I did buy the light tension springs when I bought the hood. Thats the first thing the guy at Mustangs Plus recommended.

true. he knows what needs to be done.
But as me and 66_5.0 had talked before, he is waiting till he does some suspension upgrades before ordering wheels and tires. If you look at the pics while it was in the shop, these wheels on their now are WAAAAAAYYY better then the directional set.
Some blk torques thrust M's would be an inexpensive step in the right direction on a budget. Matter a fact you could probably sell the rims and tires you currently have and buy a set of torque thrust m's and take the money you would spend on painting your set or powder coating and put it towards tires.

Corey thanks for your brutal honestly asshole! I like these rims but I do agree on getting a better stance.
V-town coupe- Exactly, Ive looked at the Shelby Ms and love em. I could live with those rims on my car, hmm.
Would I be able to run those rims if I bought reverse eye leaf springs and 620 Grab-A-Trak front springs if I cut them about an inch? Wouldnt want it to look like a donk.

They need to make those in 17". 18"'s look huge on the 64-66 stangs IMO. 66_5.0 can probably fit those no problem, heck he could probably squeeze some 33" mud terrains under those wheel wells right now. lol Paint is done, time to lower that car now bro!!

seriously if you could drum up a few extra bucks your rims and tires gotta be worth something it just may sit on jack stands for a sec but its winter.
I have a wheel measuring device if you want to measure for wheels. your more then welcome to barrow it.

Just giving you crap! lol a Shelby drop up front would do you some good or cut half of one coil upfront. Are you running long shackles in the rear? I would change them back to stock if you are. 1" lowering blocks would help out too for the rear. Most guys like a 7" wide rim up front and a 8" in back. All depends on how low you want to go. Mustngs plus has a lot of info for rim sizes.

I have the GT springs up front and also have sitting in my room the so called "1-Inch lowering Grab A Trak 620 springs" for the front as well. They didnt lower the car at all but Im planning on cutting a coil off those and seeing how it looks.
No Im using the stock ones, Ill look at the lowering blocks because it has been metioned to me before.
Believe me, Mustangs Plus knows me haha I go to them for everything basically.
What is your suspension/wheel set up?

I got 15x7 wheels. 24" tall tires up front and 26" in back. Up front I got it dropped by cutting springs and a Shelby drop. It got a little too low so I had to add some coil spacers. My car has a lot rake to the stance, going towards the "hotrod" look. The rear is 4 1/2 mid eye leaf springs with caltracs. The rear has plenty if ground clearance. The front can get sketchy at times. I've had to unload people from the car to get over speedbumps and to get up driveways. The longtube headers were to blame for that though.

Ok I want to do the 5 mid-eye leaf springs since I have a 235/60/15 tire in the back, I think itll fit the wheel well perfect.
Yea I want to do the Shelby drop but with the way you make it sound, its a bit much.
Ill try the 620 springs with a cut coil and see how it goes, then go from there.
Edit: Would you mind posting pics? Or PM either way
Thanks

I would do the drop or cut 1/2 a coil. Not both. Ill take some measurements on where mine sits. It def low upfront tho. You should get your wheels picked out first if you plan to go bigger.
Your going to rub the rear tires with mideyes. My m/t are roughly the same size. Mine rub if I put anyone in the backseat. You should be able to clear them if you roll the fender lips. I would be scared of jacking up the new paint. 225/60/r15 would clear.
Measured and the top of the front wheel arch is just under 24" and the rear is just over 26". My front valance is 9" off the ground.

Id cut the front first then figure out which rears to get. almost everyone i know has bought the mid eye springs and are un-happy due to the fact it pretty much raises your car from where its at now. every single one of them has gone ahead and bought the reverse eye at this point. I do want to add that you have the 64-66 body style and most of the people im referring to have a 67-71 stang. i know your wheel opening is smaller on the early cars.
As far as the front springs go, Maier racing told me that the rule of thumb they use is:
figure out how much you want to lower the car in inches
pull the coil spring out and put the flat side on the ground and measure to the highest point. That gives you your overall spring height.
then take half of what you want to lower the car out of the total height of the spring. for example
you want to lower your car 2" and your spring is a total height of 15" so then you have this
2"/.5=1" which means you will be taking 1 inch out of the spring
then you go 15"-1"=14" of total spring height.
so then you would run your tape measure till you reach 14" and that would be your cutting point and after you cut one then lay the existing piece on the other spring and it will give you your cut mark on the other spring.
not trying to make anyone feel stupid but usually if your not here in person to see it its better broken down. Ever since he told me this i've used it and to be honest its not super exact but pretty damn close. Its a lot better then ahh lets just cut a coil and see where its at or the ole famous get out the torch and heat them up.
something else to consider would be a shelby drop before spring cutting.
also about 6 months ago a buddy of mine whos on a budget couldnt really handle the ride of the his super hacked up springs anymore so he went ahead and bought this:
http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/vas_bolton-co.html
with the 2" lowering cap and mounted some shorter bump stops and with a little spring adjustment plus the arm drop the stance was pretty damn close back to the way it was and the ride was WAAAAAY better!

Thanks for the info man!
I will for sure use the info on cutting/ measuring the springs. My plan actually was to just cut and go haha.
Im not too concerned about the ride quality now since its not a DD and it rides crappy anyway.
I actually got to see a 66 on 17" Bullets this past weekend and I really like it! I would definately have to get the right offset though.
That kit for the coilovers isnt too bad actually, its pretty cheap considering all the other kits I have seen. Seems like its worth it.

Well, I havent done much to the car since I've gotten her back, but this weekend I will be lowering the car because it needs is BAD!
I decided to stick with my Classic 100 rims since they are almost new. Im just going to cut my front coils since I have an extra set and for the rear I will be using the lowering blocks, going with the 2" drop.
This month I hope to have a few things done since Knotts is coming around the corner, I need to be ready.

Thanks V-Town!
I want to only because the front is slighlty higher and the least I want is for it to be flush.
And dammit I was going to paint those today, I even told my buddy that someone was going to point it out haha. Getting done tomorrow

Just stock, cut springs and lowering blocks. I made the decision to do motor instead of suspension. I want full TCP suspension, that'll happen next year.
