OAKLAND -- A 27-year-old man died this morning after his motorcycle collided with a van on Hegenberger Road near Oakland International Airport, police said.
Hegenberger Road remains closed in both directions at Leet Drive as the accident investigation proceeds, but should reopen about 11:30 a.m., police said.
The motorcyclist's name has not been released pending notification of his family. The driver of the van was not injured.
The crash occurred about 6 a.m. as the motorcyclist was riding southbound on Hegenberger toward the airport. The van, a Chevrolet Astro owned by Sky Chefs, a provider of airline catering and in-flight services, was traveling north on Hegenberger toward Interstate 880 when the driver attempted to make left turn onto Leet. The motorcycle slammed into the passenger side of the van.
The impact was so great, the front end of the motorcycle was completely demolished, and the van was spun around. The motorcyclist was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland where he later died.
Traffic to and from the airport has been clogged all morning as police have been diverting vehicles over to 98th Avenue.

Wow I just met that cat not to long ago. I was riding down Macdonald and pulled up to my friends. And Matt pulled up behind me, didn't even know him and we must have talked for about an hour about our cars. I think that goes to show how cool he was and will be missed.

Happened right around the corner from where I work this morning. My coworker hit me on the nextel around 6.15 saying they just saw the result of a really tragic collision involving a motorcycle. Sucks that it hits really close to home with him being a mustang guy, even more since he was a family man. I've seen that mustang around as well. Condolences to his family and may he RIP.

All I remember is him saying " I'm that guy doin' 160 on the freeway, dippin' through traffic on my bike, got 5 min to get to work, and 3 minutes to spare when I get there". Damn this sucks to hear I used to ride everyday to work from Brentwood to SF & there were several close calls I must say, especially crossing that Bay Bridge. Drivers just don't see riders that well. I hella miss riding an all, but shit like this always makes me think again...
