I'm curious what can you do with a jailbreak on iPhone that you can't do with a one not done and or what's the advantage

From what I hear it allows you the opportunity to download apps for the phone that are not part of apples exclusive app developers. Meaning you can download any app from any crack pot developer including ones apple shuns and doesn't sanction.

and most importantly, free access to crack'd apps that you otherwise would be paying for in the apps store.
other things you can do that are pretty useful: free tethering, bypass 3g restrictions on certain apps(i.e ones that take a lot of bandwidth), customize the look and feel of the user interface, free voice over IP calling via a SOP dialer, free text using google voice mobile...and there are a ton of other things u can do.

^^^Exactly their are a ton of things u can do, one of the apps I use daily that isn't a part of the app store is BiteSMS, it allows you to answer a text from any window without having to close it out Pretty good stuff

I haven't done the update to 4.0 on my 3g yet. Will this jailbreak still work or is an update needed?

I have a 3G running JB'd iOS4 and it runs pretty slow even with multi-task turned off. You have to constantly kill processes for it to run smooth. SBSettings helps but I have to use it too often. I'd stick with JB 3.1.X.

Any Android OS users here? I am thinking about getting the Samsung Captivate. I figured if I don't like it, I'd have 30 days to return and just cop an iPhone4.

i hear that 4.0 sucks on 3g and will make your phone run terribly slow.

im on a 3gs and jailbroken on 4.0 and had to do the following(this info is available on modmyi):
previously was on 3.0.1
-upgraded to 3.1.2 by restoring on itunes. i dont remember offhand but i had to modify one of the system files to trick itunes to prevent blocking a restore to an older FW.
-jailbreak via blackra1n
-custom 4.0 firmware using pwnage or equivalent
-restore via itunes using the custom 4.0 fw generated by the pwnage tool.

for those using iphone 4 the jailbreak is as simple as this:
1. On your iDevice, open Safari.
2. Go to JailbreakMe.com.
3. Slide to Jailbreak.
4. Wait a minute or so while it goes through it's deal.
5. Enjoy a jailbroken iDevice.
