thanks for the suggestion. I am sure he does great work, but I just can't justify paying him $850 to change my top..labor only. Sounds like a great guy too.

Check King's Kustom covers in Hayward. They were charging 1k with materials, so if you brought you own they would be cheaper i would assume.

There work was killer last time I went there.

Are you kidding me? hahah.

I am simply unfamiliar with shops up here, but in SoCal I know of several places that charge under $200 for the replacement. If the shop has done this job several times, it should take a max of 4 hours. If they take longer, they are doing something wrong. But thanks anyways. I might just have to drive down to SoCal and get it down over there haha.

the question is: if you pay the cheap price will the top leak?

I know $850 is kinda expensive, but at least you wont have to have it done over.

850?! wtf, i hope that is with materials included.

get your top from 5.0 resto and then i would recommend a place in the city called Val's auto upholstery.

Its been awhile since I had mine done, but he charged me i believe 400 in labor. it took 2 days. google their number

Does that make ANY sense [Confused]

How could a business stay open spending a full day or a day and a half for $400?

I never looked into it, but how hard can it be to install a top? [Confused]

Do that shit yourself [patriot]

wow hidnos, this was like 6 years ago so my memory isn't so crisp, but they work on OTHER cars too ya know! a two day turnaround is ok for a top. brought it in the morning and picked it up the next day in the afternoon. their were other cars they were working on to numnutz

Posted by 90FoX (Member # 1974) on :

Just because a shop takes 2 days to finish a car DOES NOT mean they spent that entire time on the car. Some shops work a few hrs on a few cars throughout the day, rather than do one by one.

My brother got his top replaced by one of them a few years ago. Hasn't had a problem since. I know that you get what you pay for, but 850 for just labor is TOO much. I mean, cmon, some places charge that much to do an engine swap. No way in hell im paying that much to change my top haha. Thankfully I found a place that will do it for 350 up here.

Haha if its so easy, ill give you $250, and you and your mom can put it on =D

But nah, I've had 3 coupes, and none of them compare to this convertible =)

where in socal are you having this done for so cheap? I'd replace the top on my `91 tomorrow if it would be only $200 labor and done right!

This place charged my friend a bit over $200 when he got his top replaced a couple of years ago. He did great work.

Called "jim" at sure-fit. Asked for install only since I have the kit. Waited a few seconds as he pulled a price out of his ass and said 1G. Later "jim"

hahah yeah he quoted me $850 for labor only. So sad. Fixing our cars already is expensive and these people try to rip people off even more.

they're not ripping you off at those prices [Roll Eyes]

Put the "quality" of their work with the quality of a $300 job and you'll see the difference. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

Got quoted TWO different prices Don. When I called again to confirm price, it went from 850 to 1000. So as they say down south, "Fuck Dat."

No matter how great their quality is, I can find some other shop that will do the same exact job and equal quality for a much cheaper price. You get what you pay for only goes so long. $1000 for just labor is a stupid price no matter what way you see it.

Uhuh, I am wrong..I am sure if some one charged 1000 bucks to change a CAI and claimed they had the best quality in the world, you would be the first one to get it changed...after all, you are paying 1000 bucks, so you must be getting a lot =)

Put it this way Don. If you quote me a price on replacing my heater core AND the word of mouth is that you do dam good work, I would most likely take it to you. If I call you the next day to set-up a time and place, then you quote a price that is a few hundred dollars more, would you still tell me that it's the quality of your work that matters?

my point is, it's a FEW HOUR JOB and there is detail in stitching and isntaling it to seal CORRECTLY! It's not like an oil change or even a valve cover replacement etc, it takes a skilled person and a few hours. If you're paying a business $350, they are not skilled at all, imo. I can't tell you the guy who answered the phone that quoted $850 first, then got off the phone realized how difficult of a job it is and then said to himself, "fuck, I only quoted that for THAT job?" Then you called back and he thinks it's just another job so he quotes it accordingly. Can't tell you he didn't have 5 other people in his office infront of him, ETC. I can't tell you why he'd quote that.

My point is, if you go to a business and expect to pay $350 you'll get a rushed job done by someone who's not skilled in the area. Air, water etc may leak, I dunno. But I can tell you it's not a simple job. I have a vert, my vert could use a nice cloth top. I went to BK upholstery and asked about the isntall (this was last year.) When he told me the price I asked why and he came out to the car, showed me the stitching needed, that he needed to swap or replace the padding, seals ETC. It's physically impossible, imo, to get this done in a couple hours correctly with any quality.

He knew who I was. Told him the kit was complete. "Are you sure its complete, said he". Does a bear shit in the woods? It's a skilled job putting on a top, not denying it, but as I asked you, would YOU have done that? BTW.GREAT JOB on the HC replacement!

Posted by js (Member # 9859) on :

I know this job can't be done in a couple of hours. It is about a 4 hour job if they are skilled at it and have experience. So lets say they decide to make a bigger profit and double the hours. So lets say its 8 hours. Most shops charge about $100 per hour. So this comes out to 800 bucks. That is 800 dollars with extra hours added, because believe me, it does not take 8 hours to do this job. My brother has a vert and he got his replaced. He left his car at noon and picked it up at 6. Of course they did not work 6 hours straight on the car, so it took them less than 6 hours to do it. The job came out perfect with no problem up to date. So I don't understand how this place thinks its okay to charge $1000 for this job. If they don't feel they can do it, or think they are too busy at the moment, they should just say so and not be giving crazy prices for just labor.

Compared to "quality" interior/top businesses, $1,000 ISN'T A CRAZY PLACE. Get it done at Jiffy Lube, I COULD CARE LESS.

No, but I cannot speak for others not knowing what they were thinking or how it really went down. When I do heater cores, or work on my own cars, I basically try to make things go back BETTER than they came apart. Missing screws, I try to reinstall with new screws from my stash, things not tight, they will be tight when I'm done etc.

I'm not done! Since we're. On the subject when I changed my top I ordered the complete set from 5.0 resto which was a vinyl top. It didn't come with a headliner which I think makes a big difference in road and wind noise. My question is where can u by the cloth type top and how much will it costya? The set from 5.0 resto was 400 I think

I found a shop in San Jose that will do it for $250. They also warranty their install. So no problem there. =) Thanks for the help guys!

I paid $1200 for a top on a 95 it was the top only. no window. Someone stabbed my top so im sure they re-stitched my headliner. I got rippped off but good thing my insurance paid for it. I also had a 91 lx that needed a top. My friend found a good top in pick and pull and he installed it. First time doing it and it came out looking awesome. Best $100 ive ever spent! Its easy on foxes

if your just swapping out the complete frame and top from one car to the other its easy" the only tricky bolts to unscrew are the ones lined around the back, but the rest is pretty easy"

Jim at surefit has been a friend of my families since they opened over 30 years ago. He does quality work and cam make whatever you want. Not just slapping a kit on. I think his focus is more toward high end builds or dealship requests for repairs. Not your average 20 yr old beater bucket fox. My inlaws have a top that he did in the mid 80's that still looks like new. Just remember you get what you pay for. Your paying for the rep and experience. If you want cheap, go to Mexico and have Pablo install your cheap kit. It may last a couple years. [patriot]
