If your taking your lady, skip Santa Cruz and head out to Monterrey. 17 mi drive, Cannery. Much nicer than Santa Cruz.

I'd agree. the last time i went out to the boardwalk was somtime last year and that place is rough. Pretty dirty nowadays unlike before when I was younger. I'd definitley suggest another area if you want to wine and dine your lady [Wink] Although, you can walk around the shops/restaraunts in the downtown area of santa cruz if you guys are into that, but for a cleaner beach, monterey/carmel for sure... When was the last time you were at the Boardwalk? I agree, it got pretty bad for a while, but I was just there last week and it was 1000 times better. In any case, the original poster said he wanted a day at the beach and, as much as I like Monterrey, I don't think it's a good place for that. Capitola is a good pick if you also want restaurants and shopping. But, if I go JUST for the beach, I head to Twin Lakes or 21st ave (Google them)

Monterey is cool, but I think Capitola is better to wine and dine the lady. If you're looking for another nice beach near by Santa Cruz, try Rio Del Mar.

+1 for Capitola. Spent the weekend there with the misses. There are some places to wine and dine and also a couple of nice bars if you feel like going out at night. It's about 4 miles from Santa Cruz. [patriot]
