well I got pulled over by a CHP on monday and he dinged me for everything and took pictures of everything, heres a list of my mods:
347 stroker low compression
edelbrock performers
vortech s-trim
bbk 70mm tb w/egr
trick flow track heat
1" phenolic spacer
bbk longtubes
off road x pipe
2 chamber flows w/tailpipes
open crank case breathers on both valvecovers
heater lines removed (due to busted heater core)
water line to egr spacer removed.
upr power pipe
C&L 80mm mass air
42lb injectors
SCT tune
I know the bbk tb is carb legal along with the vortech, but is the track heat intake carb legal? it has egr hook up. Also he told me the ref will pull a spark plug and check the bore and stroke of the motor some how, is this true?
will the tune pass smog?
Please chime in with any info if you have been in this position or have any knowledge. any info will be greatly appreciated. Also how much am I looking to pay in fines? Thanks!
and he said my 3 inch cowl hood was illegal too

Lol!!! What a moron! There is no way to figure bore/stroke from a spark plug hole!!!! Just get everything legit and a good set of cats and get the car to running temp and take it there.

the only thing you can find from the spark plug hole is compression the cop obiviously didnt know his ass from his elbow. hoods illegal? really then get all those damn ricers with the big ass wings maybe to him they may be illegal too

They're probably the most disliked in law enforcement lol. What was their reason for pulling you over?? And where did they pull you over? CHP has been all over the place lately.

You are just gonna need to put stock midpipe on stock air cleaner on any vacuum lines/hoses. You have 2 chances to pass, if you dont pass the first time, ask him/her everything you will need to pass the 2nd time. I went through that a while back, ref was actually a cool guy, be cool to them and they will be cool with you, they do check everything, but he didnt pull my spark plugs for anything.

Did he tell you DO NOT drive the car, and if he catches you on the road before fixing your car he will have it towed and be written up for dis-obeying a law enforcement officer.

They can't figure bore and stroke but they can get the cubic inches. We had one at the track to check for cheating, catch the guys running 383's. We had a board 400 small block and it clearly showed we had a 406.

I thought nascar tech officals have a device to check cubic volume of a cyl. BTW I have checked stroke on more than one engine with just removing a spark plug it isnt that hard....lie, lie lie dont tell them any info on motor tell them 306 with ecam...

you can do that? what if all the shit is 50 state legal?
i know a guy (my dads friend) who was drunk driving, pulled over to sleep, a cop knocked on his window and told him he had to keep going and couldnt sleep there, 6 blocks away SAME COP busts him for drunk driving.
i carry a book with all the laws about cars in it. tint is legal but only to a certain percent. cowel hoods are legal.. they dont obstruct anything. if you can see the top of your cowel then its not in the way.
do you have long tubes? shorties are legal, some aftermarket cats are legal but my offroad cats pass the sniffer. open breathers are a no no. they cant take stuff off your car. they can look at it, but they cant pop the hood themselves let alone pull your plugs.
you have to have the car inspected? by who?
a cop tried to nail me for my tires being too wide and not enough tread.. the tire had 95% tread and was a full on street tire. some cops are just bitches.

Not true, you can't have ANY tint on the front door windows.

If an officer asks you to pop the hood you have to pop it otherwise you can be towed right then and there, also, your mods include long tube headers and an off road x pipe, both highly illegal in CA, so you are kinda asking to be pulled over. I don't like it any more then you do I'm actually dealing with a situation myself right now but law is law CA just sucks which is sad because this is where the whole car and cruising culture originated.

It's nothin man I have a ahole sense of humor. Unfortunately you are going to have to get your car up to stock to fight this the state is hard up for cash so you know CHP isn't messing around those guys even write us tickets. Hell I'm in a situation right now at work cause someone talked to an officer who went straight to my sup.

I have to agree I have sold two previous Mustangs because I reached a point where it was no more legal mods available. Although I agree that laws are laws CA is definately out of control, how is it that parts are 49 state legal? Are you telling me that this is the only state that cares about the environment? I call BS, it's all politics and bullshit. I'm seriously considering a move to NV or AZ.

Its all about money. I order to get the Cab # the part has to go through testing to make sure it wont effect smog levels. and who does the testing? the ref and the state and I'm sure they charge bank $$$

your very misinformed. Certain vehicles are exempt from the bi-annual smog testing. They are still subject to emission requirements and can be sent to a referee for modified emission components just like any other vehicle.

Very true you are still required to have your smog equipment mufflers etc, although you do not see as many '67's pulled over as you do '97's.

I am aware of this. I is alot simpler to hook up a smog or any over emissions stuff when needed, opposed to every two years finding someone that will smog my car and not worry about me having all carb stickers. even though it will pass the sniffer just fine.
getting something pre smog still leaves me with alot less headaches and alot less chance of going to the ref

its easy to find people who dont care about carb stickers.. i know of 1 locally, and about 5 in the bay area. 2 in the east bay.
cops are crawling all over lately. keep it about 3mph under the limit and they are much less likely to mess with you. i have seen 8 cops more than usual in the last 2 days. i only see 2-3 a day tops.

I got stopped last year with my car built 4.6 long tubes 3in o/r x and so on. the only thing he saw was the bbk intake and wrote me the smog ref ticket. i went to court and told the judge the tranny was bad and didnt know when it would be fixed. All i had to do was pay the ticket which was 410 but atleast i ddint have to spend the weekend taking cams out changing the long tubes and new tune. the 410 was well worth it to not have to change it all.
If your car is modded at all and anyting visual is there PC to stop you it doesnt take much.
i bought some parts off of my local Smog Ref and we told me the best bet is 65 and older and you wont really have to worry about anything and at the most it would be an issue having open breathers.

I went to see the ref last week. Anything adjustable is illegal. For me it was an AFPR and cam gear (I'm running a turbo 4). Open element breathers........bad. He got under my car with a mirror to check the EO # on the cat. All your aftermarket goodies need an EO # but you probably already know that. Any smog equipment the car came with originally must be present and operating. If you swapped motors, the motor must be the same year as the car or newer and again, must have all original smog equipment relative to the year of the motor.
