I think I made up my mind and I'm
gonna be on the hunt for a clean 96-98 cobra. I've seen a lot on craigslist, some as low as $5k and others as high as $10k...
I'm trying to get one that' has a pretty much stock motor that I can daily drive. What do you guys think?
**Luke...how much did you get yours for and how many miles
did it have if you don't mind me asking? You have a prime example of an unmolested 96-98 cobra!
Thanks!

You know my opinion, you'll like it! I'd say your looking at 6-8 k and maybe up to 9k for something nice. I can't believe how much those cars came down in price. I like the one in Reno you saw on Craigslist for the money, may be worth the drive.

I've been thinking about selling my 97 Pacific Green Cobra w/black int, and it seems like the 6-8k range is right.

I agree with Alex, sell the blue one. I'll buy it.

I am on the fence about selling it, but I should have my mind made up in a couple weeks. As for the black interior, I had to convert it. I've never seen another black interior Pac Green Cobra either.

Alex, you finally come to your senses and want to get back in a blue Cobra?

Haha, I haven't forgotten about you or Jack (the50ho). I'm willing to sell the blue one, but my price is a lot higher than $8k.

The 96-98 Cobra is a great choice and a great value.
I'm impressed with these cars in general as they are a huge upgrade over the fox platform. The DOHC engine is smooth as silk, but requires 4.30 or 4.56 gears to really wake it up. With a 7k RPM redline, do not fear the gear. It's needed to quickly get the car in the power-band as these cars do not have the low end grunt from idle-3K like a pushrod EFI 302 does.
If you are interested, check out this thread which shows the kinds of power figures people have been able to lay down with basic bolt-ons (290-310rwhp is possible without ever touching the heads or cams). From what I gather, short runner intakes really wake these cars up (15-20rwhp at above 6K-RPM). I am actually making a short-runner intake right now. The 300rwhp recipe seems to be the following:
- Full Exhaust (Longtubes)
- Pullies
- JLT (have to lose the strut tower)
- IMRC Deletes
- Short Runner
- Tune
As far as pricing goes...
These cars are now 12-14 years old, so there are a lot of high mileage buckets out there selling in the $5-6K range needing TLC or paint work.
To score a clean example, I think you probably need $7-9K. BAB typically commands bigger bucks as well (BAB and Laser Red probably pop the hardest as far as stock paint jobs go)
Best of luck with the search!

Now go get it, and thank me later!

I'd offer $9500 and bring it home (and it's local, so you save on shipping costs)!
This car already has the gears, already has the suspension, and already has the look.
You could start with a $7K stock car, and add all those things and I promise you that it will cost you more than $2500 + the labor, time, and energy.
I just emailed the guy to get more info on the car as he claims 441hp but I don't see a blower? This ad looks incomplete. If everything in there is true, I don't doubt he has $30K+ into it.

or you could build your own fobra for about $2-$3k like I did, depending how much you part out the donor car for
I absolutely love my 4v, last sunday I ran at a BMWCCA autox on a very technical track, and beat all but 2 cars in the M classes, both of which were running r-comp tires (slicks) while I ran street tires that have 21 autox days on them
Yep, my $2k POS beat the 2010 M3, M5, Z3 M coupes, `08 M3, lots of mid-90's M3's, etc

yea, that car is actually on Sac CL for $12k. I talked to them yesterday and they wont go lower than $10.5k. Its a bit out of my spending limit at the time but a great deal nonetheless! I wish I could...
But if I were going to spend $10k, I'd be in the market for a mach 1

I know it's hard to dish out that $10.5K upfront, but I promise that you will spend much more by starting with a $7000-8000 stocker and getting it to the point that you are happy. That white Saleen Cobra is a deal if I ever seen one!
Best of luck
