Looking to get another toy but need some helpful suggestions so I can decide where to begin my search...Looking to spend about $7000 so I know a lot of "good" cars are out of my price range right now, but its worth a shot!

My goal for this car would not be anything spectacular...just a somewhat comfortable car that can be daily driven if necessary. I'm not looking for a 12 second car off the bat, but something with enough power to have some fun in the twisties and handle fairly well.

Let me know what your suggestions!

1. Old school: Mustang, Falcon, Chevelle, Nova, etc...

2. 96-99 Cobra (I definitely can't afford the 03 right now)

3. Bullitt: I've always liked these for some reason. I know its not the fastest and it has a 2v 281, which is whats kind of holding me back

4. Foxbody Saleen or Cobra (if I can find one in my price range)

Old school pony! Well are you going to be using it as a dd or what? IMO I say old school..easier to work on and don't have to smog. Or, 96-98 cobras do have a lot of potential, and you can find one right around your price range..maybe a tad bit more

GL on your decision

Old school was my first option when i sold my car, but I thought about it and really dont want a headache...i know it comes with the territory, but old schools will most likley give me more grief than something newer. But if something comes up, I might have to jump on it [patriot]

Get a 96 99 cobra....the old school mustang is gonna cost you to fix unless u find something nice and clean but I. Think a 96 99 cobra would be nice to daily drive and already fast stock..

build a notch..with 7000$ you can have a pretty clean fox

The "oooo skooooo" (is that how you are supposed to day it on cafords?) is always going to turn more heads, get more looks, leave a lasting impression, have lower probability of a duplicate, etc. The "cool factor" is through the roof. Can't beat it.

Now for the compromise... The 96+ Cobra will usually be ready out of the box. It's got creature comforts, AC, power everything, seals well, gets 18-20mpg, and will lay down right around 300rwhp with exhaust, pullies, CAI, and a tune. It just won't require as much attention in general.

The classic is primitive and unsophisticated, but doesn't lose resale.

If you haven't owned a classic before you are probably in for a bit of a surpise, but I'd say go for it.

Just keep in mind for $7K you probably won't find any 96-99 Cobra that will blow your socks off, but it will be a good starting point. For $10K, now you can expect to buy a car with great paint and mods.

My vote would be a 67-68 Mustang Coupe...

By the way, I saw a 63.5 Falcon that blew me away at Knotts. It had the rear fender arches cut out to match the fronts and I'd take this one over a lot of Mustangs! They are cheaper than a 67-68 Mustang in general too.

and a few others I liked:

66-70 Chevelles are awesome, but you will likely pay a big of a premium over a 65-68 stang. The 67 Nova is a stunning car. 63-65 Falcon is cool, and cheaper. I like the early 70's cutlass' too, and can't forget the 67-68 cougar!

Some good starting points:

Although I love Termi's and they have more than enough performance than I need, I'm still on the fence with my search. i really want an old school to cruise around in but I love hitting the twisties and really want to start road racing. [Embarrassed]

so buy an "ooooo skoooo" and set it up for RR.

Plenty of aftermarket companies out there have hardware available to set up a 65-70 Mustang for the twisties.

If you want a car that's fun in the twisties and makes a decent amount of power with just a couple mods pick up a 95-99 E36 M3

trust me, that's been an option as well...but i'm stuck on getting another mustang. Although, if I could find an E30 M3 in my price range (highly doubt it) I'd be all over it!

Posted by 1QUIK93 (Member # 9592) on :

I doubt you'd find an original E30 M3 in your price range as well. You can always swap a E36 m3 motor into an E30 and it will outrun most mustangs on the street imo.

If it passes a compression test, 127K is peanuts.

i think old skcool is out of the question 7k isnt gonna get you much.
96-98 cobra is great but i think you just be settling.

i think your best best would be your old white cobra what was wrong with that car ? had great suspension plenty of power. and was super clean.

id only go foxbody if it was a saleen or 93 cobra.

Wussup albert...yea if I go with an old school, it wont be top notch or anything, but I have seen a few 64-66 coupes that were pretty clean around the price range...

As of today, I'm leaning towards a 96-98 cobra...I've been wanting to try out a 4v and as you might already know, I love the sn95 bodystyle. I'd do a 99+ cobra or mach 1 but theyre out of my price range as well.

The DOHC is a different animal than the pushrod. I absolutely love it and can't see myself going back...

4.30/4.56 gears, exhaust, pullies, CAI, tune and you got yourself a fun street car for not a whole lot of dough.

Yea I know...thats why I want one so bad [Whoo Whooooo!] I drove my cousin's Mach 1 a few times and althought they're a bit faster stock vs stock compared to a 96-98 cobra, the motors pull so smooth its ridiculous [Big Grin]

Now, if only I can find a clean one within my price range...

(FYI...I talked to the owner of that red one posted above and I'm gonna pass. Said clutch chatters, rips in the driver seat, and could use paint = no thanks) [patriot]

put your chips to the left for a bit and get you a mach 1 after saving. All your topics lead towards a mach. but your like a kid (I feel you tho) money burning a hole in your pocket.

Posted by Luke87GT (Member # 21) on :

Then get a Mach1... If you shop around you should find one in the $10K range.

I knew there was something a miss with that red car as it's been for sale for months.

This might be worth a look...

I had a 86 turbo. The 944 has a 2.5 4 cylinderand its turbo. It had good kick and is an enthusiests car now. My buddy had a 89 s model which is better but I don't know why. Regardless its a fun carto drive. Again all I had was a chip blow off valve and suspension. Thats it.
I would definately get it up and running. Its worth a pretty penny if you decide to sell.

what year. A client just gave me a older model 944 Turbo 88. I been sitting on it until I get more info on it.

sorry for the hi-jack.

N8, my dad went thru a bunch of them. theyre kinda like 5.0s in the porsche world. wanna sell, then regret it after. i owned one, and them things are wild on the freeways.. theyre known to have 5.0 swaps in them too. if you do decide to keep the 944 first thing you should do is replace the timing belt. heres a little info for you n8.

Timing and Balance Shaft Belt – Please replace the 944 timing belt every 60,000 miles or you will be replacing bent valves and possibly even a broken camshaft. Replacing the Balance shaft and rollers at the same time is highly recommended.

a little something to read over....
