Honestly I see it as a positive step with potential negative backlash on many levels. So all in all it will prove to be not worth it IMO.

the backlash on this will make Arizona look like some backwards ass, country bumpkins. I like where they are trying to take this, but it is just implemented wrong.
Lawsuits, negative press, tourism loss revenue, they are already losings sponsors and stuff for tradeshows and what have you. So this decisions will hit their pocket books. And they dont want that. They should rethink this.

The key word in this issue is ILLEGAL alien, if you are here legally you have nothing to worry about.
I think its about damn time a state passed a law like this giving police the clearance to check for immigration status. My wife is Canadian, and a LEGAL resident, so i know (if we lived in Arizona) this could affect her, but she is here legally and would have nothing to worry about if her immigration status was checked.
So, Im all about this law...

its good and bad in many ways
as said its bad to point out a race. i do think it is good for the mexicans that come over and do all the gang stuff and robbing and what not. the mexiucans that come and have respect and just want a better life for them selfs and there family is ok....but i so think there should be ways this is done and what not. i know that there is allways going to be battles with ppl over illegals and what not.
as for me being in WA and im in sequim/port angeles. {look it up on a map} i am right next to the water where ther eis a ferry that goes to canda and back about 20 times a day. boarder patroll is thick here. ther eis alot of problems with candians comeing her to buy things or over staying...but they dont really come to live or really cause trouble.
as i said it has it good and bad. but what ppl need to see is that that... skin color and hair color what you drive makes no differnce...we are all people and all feel emotions and pain. we should all be treated equal. as a country we and all need to respect that and come up with a way to deal with it...with out causing problems for the country or over population etc.
i have no idea where im going with this...so im going to stop
but we are all ppl. laws are mainly made if there is a problem and its made to fix it. sometimes the goverment and states are wrong but its a idea and it can always be over turned.

A. none of us will do.
B. Or will not do for those wages.
I have said this before and I will say it again. They leave and America in mnay aspects goes to shit. We will start paying 8 bucks a pound for tomatoes and shit like that. I agree. We should have a wall like in china built. It should go 20 feet into the ground also. That way if you tunnel you have to go deep as hell. Also place some type of technology to detect people moving around. Mexican govt should also agree to outlaw any citizens walking around near the border unless it is near a crossing point.(as if they would enforce anything :rollseyes: )

Bubba hit the nail on the head with this statement. Your going to get a better job when you have a working Visa. It's your own fault for comming to the U.S illegally. That's why your picking produce for penny's instead of getting a better job.
All this talk about produce going up is nonsence IMO....... We get produce from other countries to. Why would a grocery store like safeway pay 5.00 a pound for apple's when they can buy a like product overseas for a cheaper price? I think produce would go up in price a little but not 3x's what it is now.
We will make up that money on all the program's our tax dollars go to pay for illegals medical, food......

I am so fortunate to be rearended by someone with no Ls or insurance. I just thank them for doing jobs white people won't do. I think even though there are 50 day labors that hang out at the local home depot we don't have enough. I'd like to invite thousands more. I love driving in with a truck and getting about 15 people running and pushing eachother to be the first at my window, when I am just there for a light bulb. I want my mother or sister to be teated like that when they go to home depot in my truck too....

But more than likely the grower will have to pay more for that worker, which transfers the cost to us as the consumer. And there is more of that around. patronage in a store is not a good correlation to a law of this nature. Like I said earlier, I like the step they took. But I think it is too aggressive and Arizona as a state will pay for this one. And all in all this sets the country back quite a few years in principle. I doubt they retrain their officers. So there will be gross negligence all up and down this one. I can see the lawsuits stackin up quite easily. Arizona is already a arm pit, this will take it to asshole status.

I'd rather get pulled over a few times and get checked out if it means we will have less people driving around with no Green Cards, no insurance, and no reason to stick around if they break any laws. How many people jump across the boarders after they do dirt? How many people transport drugs across the boarder?
IMO I think it's a step in the right direction as far as protecting our boarders..... Next we need to build a real wall on the boarder and have guards watching it. Go to another country and see what you have to go through to to get in.

Their are hundreds of cases every year where people get arrested by immigration officers for Not having there papers in hand eventhough there legal here. And even cases of people that have been deported and there citizens here without comitting a crime. And all they get is an I'm sorry from the government. Your talking about past history, most of the people here are born in the USA so this is their country. Illegals come from another country and then come into this country without permission. I think it is pretty presumptuous to assume that western civilization was the sole catalyst to innovation and technology. I do have some native american in me and take offense to that assumption.
No matter how you cut it, what Arizona is doing is right in its intent. But wrong in its execution. It is kind of sad that some cannot understand this statement "right in intent, wrong in execution". Trusting the police whom are not trained in this type observational science, to assess a persons "look" to determine if he or she may be illegal is wrong. Now if they sent them out to lets say the CIA or FBI style training that teach them how to assess mannerisms, facial structures of a region, I would be more on board. There is a tremendous, gaping hole in this law that will be filled with lawsuits and possibly riots and civil unrest.
Not a good trade-off. IMO

I think Arizone took the steps they have because the Federal government is lagging with solutions. I support what Arizona has done, and I think that they are taking a proactive approach to their illegla immigration issue.
I know that illegal immigrants have, and will continue to have, positive influence upon our economy. They also have a negative influence in many regards.
As for facial recognition and some of the other crappy ideas that have been mentioned when it comes to "spotting" illegal immigrants, why don't we leave it like this:
If the cops contact you because you are commiting a crime (insert any crime here) then they ship you outta here.
If you are walking home from a hard days work, not bothering anyone, and a cop comes accross you and asks for your identification and you have none or are undocumented, but they have no crime to charge you with, your name and photo go into a national database and we trust that Uncle Sam will keep on eye on you. If your here illegally, you take your chances.
Has anyone ever gotten stopped in their stang and the cops mentioned something about "a lot of these things get stolen"? Did you hate the cop because he was profiling your car as a commonly stolen vehicle? Or, did you think to yourself, Man, good looken out."

If you do something to get pulled over and can't present ID, it is now a crime. Before police officers would usually either let illegals go w/ or w/o a fingerprint. Sometimes they would make them park the car and walk away until the officer is gone.

Not trying to argue with ya, because I can see at some point our views will match. But....It is a gross assumption that they "all" break laws and look for handouts. Also earliest of the early immigrants that you are referring to often committed the most heinous offenses. But that is a whole other convo.
Ultimately immigration is but a small percentage of the main problem. It is not a 1 to 1 problem to fix like most think it is. But to each their own. I'm am a con/rep and I feel welfair is a good thing...... I don't have a problem with a little money getting taken out of my check, in the event I loose my job and need some help.
I do have a problem with people who USE the system in a way it isn't intended to be used.
In a perfect world we would all have our own savings acount that we are required to pay into. Then we can only use OUR money if we are fired or hurt. If you haven't worked and haven't contributed to your pot THEN AND ONLY THEN would you depending on the reason why, receive some sort of check from the state ( using a small amount collected from sales tax or somthing)
last thing unlike social security the money in OUR acounts can never be touch/borrowed against..... Because we all know. Congress would spend our money.

Lawful stops and request for information is quite different than racial profiling stops. In the hands of folks that are not trained in the observational science(s) like FBI/CIA/ATF are makes for bad business. Leaves to much to personal interpretation and misinformation. A peace officer can't merely pull you over for anything they need a reason to. And if a cop is doing nothing but taking time from his beat to find ways to pull you over he is abusing his power and wasting all of our tax payers money but not focusing on real issues. I agree with there not being 1 solution for it. But maybe this law is a step in the direction which may result in a solution? I'm not sure either if this law is the way to go, but I'm certainly glad Arizona finally stepped up and did something about the problem! I haven't been following it all that closely, but everything I hear around me when this issue is brought up is "Arizona racist this, Arizona racist that..." then when asked, nobody else really seemed to give any other solutions. Sounds like some people just want to pull the race card every chance they get instead of actually giving some other idea to solve a problem.

just to clarifie a few things for you, the goverment doesnt give these things to illegals other than education and healthcare, but everything on this list is readily availible.
A JOB: the day they come over they are willing to work for less than minimum wages, cash under the table. and they dont just pick tomatoes, they drive trucks, build houses and roads ect.
A DRIVERS LICENSE: they dont need one they drive without it, also without insurance, but fakes are availible for a fee.
A SOCIAL SECURITY CARD: again, dont need one to work for cash. fakes are also availible.

While the law is extremely popular in the state, with 70 percent of Arizona voters approving of it and just 23 percent opposed, it has raised controversy. Below is a brief summary of the relevant information on illegal immigration in Arizona, followed by a short analysis of SB 1070's major provisions.
Illegal Immigration In Arizona
The federal government estimated that Arizona had one of the fastest growing illegal immigrant populations in the country, increasing from 330,000 in 2000 to 560,000 by 2008.<#1>1
Arizona has adopted other laws to deter the settlement of illegal immigrants in the state in recent years. The federal government estimates that the illegal immigrant population dropped by 18 percent in the state from 2008 to 2009, compared to a 7 percent drop for the nation as a whole.<#2>2 This may be evidence that the state enforcement efforts are having an impact.
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office has found that 22 percent of felonies in the county are committed by illegal immigrants.<#3>3 Illegal immigrants are estimated to be 10 percent of the county's adult population.<#4>4
Analysis of data from State Criminal Alien Assistance Program showed that illegal immigrants were 11 percent of the state's prison population. Illegal immigrants were estimated to be 8 percent of state's adult population at the time of the analysis.<#5>5
Approximately 17 percent of those arrested by the Border Patrol in its Tucson Sector have criminal records in the United States.<#6>6
The issue of illegal immigration and crime is very difficult to measure, and while in Arizona there is evidence that illegal immigrants are committing a disproportionate share of crime, it is not clear this is the case nationally.<#7>7
In 2007, the Center for Immigration Studies estimated that 12 percent of workers in the Arizona are illegal immigrants.<#8>8
In 2007, the Center estimated that illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) comprise one-fifth of those in the state living in poverty, one-third of those without health insurance, and one out of six students in the state's schools.<#9>9
In 2007, the Center estimated that one-third of households headed by illegal immigrants in Arizona used at least one major welfare program, primarily food-assistance programs or Medicaid. Benefits were typically received on behalf of U.S.-born children.<#10>10
The new law (SB 1070) is extremely popular among Arizona voters. A Rasmussen poll found that 70 percent of voters approve of the new bill, and just 23 percent oppose it.<#11>11
Among the new law's provisions:
The new Arizona law mirrors federal law, which already requires aliens (non-citizens) to register and carry their documents with them (8 USC 1304(e) and 8 USC 1306(a)). The new Arizona law simply states that violating federal immigration law is now a state crime as well. Because illegal immigrants are by definition in violation of federal immigration laws, they can now be arrested by local law enforcement in Arizona.
The law is designed to avoid the legal pitfall of "pre-emption," which means a state can't adopt laws that conflict with federal laws. By making what is a federal violation also a state violation, the Arizona law avoids this problem.
The law only allows police to ask about immigration status in the normal course of "lawful contact" with a person, such as a traffic stop or if they have committed a crime.
Estimates from the federal government indicate that more than 80 percent of illegal immigrants come from Latin America.<#12>12 Thus, there is concern that police may target only Hispanics for enforcement.
Before asking a person about immigration status, law enforcement officials are required by the law to have "reasonable suspicion" that a person is an illegal immigrant. The concept of "reasonable suspicion" is well established by court rulings. Since Arizona does not issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, having a valid license creates a presumption of legal status. Examples of reasonable suspicion include:
A driver stopped for a traffic violation has no license, or record of a driver's license or other form of federal or state identification.
A police officer observes someone buying fraudulent identity documents or crossing the border illegally.
A police officer recognizes a gang member back on the street who he knows has been previously deported by the federal government.
The law specifically states that police, "may not solely consider race, color or national origin" when implementing SB 1070.

Are you talking about a legal immigrant or an illegal thats trying to convert? I am all for a legal immigrant who has come here legally. My closest friends from high school are all Legal immigrants from India, Iran, Mexico. I am all for that, i welcome legal immigrants with open arms but illegal just puts a bad taste in my mouth. They're just doing it all wrong.
I just read somewhere that Mexico's unemployment is only 4% but 40% of the country lives under the proverty line. That's cause Mexico is a shithole and its Government is worthless. This states unemployment is what 20% now? 20% of the population could do the work that an illegal is doing. All we have to do is stop giving free handouts and make the lazy people get a job instead of sitting on unemployment for 2 years. (i know someone who is doing that and it pisses me off big time, I blame Obama and his stupid extensions he keeps giving out)

I read the bill i know the Media is totally spinning it around as a racist thing, i had to straighten out some coworkers who thought it was a bad thing until i told them the wording of the bill. They support it now that they've read it.

(CNN) -- A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona was shot Friday afternoon by an alleged illegal immigrant, authorities said.
The shooting comes amid a national debate over Arizona's tough new immigration law that allows police to demand proof of legal residency. Arizona lawmakers say the law is needed because the federal government has failed to enforce border security with Mexico, allowing more than 450,000 illegal immigrants to move into the state.
The Pinal County deputy, who was not immediately identified, contacted authorities after being wounded in the desert, saying he had been shot by an illegal immigrant with an AK-47, said Lt. Tammy Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
At one point, the deputy lost radio contact with authorities, leading to a search by foot and by air for him and the shooter, according to CNN affiliate KNXV. Video from the scene shows that the deputy was located while sitting in desert brush, surrounded by cactus. He was able to walk to a helicopter that airlifted him to a hospital.

A spokeswoman at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center confirmed that the deputy was being treated there Friday evening. He was in good condition with stable vital signs, conscious and comfortable, she said.

The search for the shooter continued into the evening.
Pinal County is between Phoenix and Tucson and has been described as a key transit point for illegal immigrants and drug traffickers. Sheriff Paul Babeu said an estimated 80 percent of illegal immigrants eventually pass through his county along the way to other locations.
Earlier this week, a CNN crew spent 12 hours on patrol with Pinal County deputies. In that time, the deputies captured more than 50 suspected illegal immigrants and about 2,000 pounds of marijuana.
Deputies in the department routinely patrol for illegal immigrants and smugglers, and it is not uncommon for them to be in the field alone, officials said. It was not immediately clear what led the deputy to engage with the shooter Friday.
The shooting is sure to heat up the debate around the new Arizona law. Critics say the law is unconstitutional and will lead to racial profiling, which is illegal. But Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and others who support the bill say it does not involve profiling or other illegal acts and will cut down on illegal immigration.
"Frankly this is just a very horrible story, but we should not generalize," Alfonso Aguilar, former chief of the U.S. Citizenship Office, told CNN's Rick Sanchez when news of Friday's shooting broke. "We should focus on the criminality of the drug traffickers ... not scapegoat undocumented immigrants who do not pose any threat to society."
Brewer on Friday signed a bill that makes changes to the immigration law, saying the changes will ease concerns about racial profiling.
The law, which will go into effect in 90 days, has already drawn at least two lawsuits and condemnation from the Mexican government and other Latin American nations. Prominent entertainers, including Shakira and Linda Ronstadt, also have spoken against the law. Some critics are calling for a boycott of Arizona, urging tourists to stay away and that no one do business with companies in the state.

Phoenix, Arizona (CNN) -- Sue Schwartz says she's been called a racist so many times she doesn't mind the label anymore. If wanting immigrants to enter the country legally, like her great-grandparents from Mexico, and obey the laws of the land makes her racist, then so be it, she says firmly.
"I'm getting to the point I wear it with pride," says Schwartz, a lifelong Arizonan who has warily watched the growth of the illegal immigrant population in the state over the course of her life.
About 500,000 unauthorized immigrants were believed to live in Arizona in 2008, and 11.9 million nationwide, up from 3.5 million nationwide in 1990, according to a Pew Hispanic Center report published in 2009.
This year, the tide is finally turning in her favor, she says, with the passage of SB 1070, aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration.
The new law requires immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there is reason to suspect they're in the United States illegally.

"I hope it makes a lot of them leave on their own, self-deportation. Hopefully that'll open up more jobs. There's a lot of people here who will do menial jobs -- maybe not pick lettuce, but these people aren't just picking lettuce any more," says Schwartz.
The new law also targets those who hire illegal immigrant day laborers or knowingly transport them.
What will Arizona immigration law do?
Schwartz, a retired USPS worker, says undocumented workers are taking jobs from citizens like her teenage granddaughter, who hasn't been able to find a job since she began looking after she turned 15.
"She can't even work at the Hometown Buffet if she doesn't speak Spanish. How fair is that?" she said.

But Schwartz and some other Americans with Hispanic backgrounds who spoke with CNN say the problem with illegal immigrants isn't just the jobs they take. It's how they're overrunning towns like Phoenix, turning them into "mini-Mexicos" with their trash-filled streets and loud music, according to Schwartz.
Of equal concern to her friend, Martha Payan, is how she claims illegal immigrants "fleece" government coffers by collecting welfare on multiple children, or vanish without a trace after an arrest or a hospital visit.
The two women, who became acquainted through various demonstrations in the metro Phoenix area, met Thursday to discuss their views outside the Maricopa County Municipal building, as more backlash against the controversial immigration law continued to flood the city.
Latin pop star Shakira arrived in town Thursday to discuss SB 1070 with Mayor Phil Gordon, who has vowed to fight the law. This comes a day after Mexico urged its citizens not to travel to Arizona.
Sporting a white baseball cap that that reads, "100% American Citizen," Schwartz says she believes that SB 1070 came about because law enforcement in Phoenix was fed up over not being able to ask suspects about their immigration status.
"Any time an American does something wrong or breaks the law they're going to pay the consequences. Whenever an illegal does something wrong they get a new ID and become a new person," she says. "I want the laws same for everybody here, not bent for them."
The 59-year-old mother of four adult children says her Mexican parents and grandparents taught her a respect for the law at an early age. Her grandmother, who lived in Juarez, Mexico, after being kicked out of the United States for smuggling drugs, encouraged her to get a good education and speak English, her second language, outside of the home.
"If I entered another country illegally I'd go to jail, yet they're demanding better treatment than their government would give us," she says.

Anna Gaines, a Mexican-born U.S. citizen, says she took up the fight against illegal immigration after becoming disillusioned by the attitudes of immigrant families that she witnessed as a teacher in the Paradise Valley School District in Paradise, Arizona.
"Many of these families were having one child after another just to earn a paycheck from the U.S. government and they didn't care about their children's education," says Gaines, the controversial founder of American Citizens United, a grass-roots organization known for its extreme views on immigration enforcement. "They didn't want to contribute, just take."

Gaines, who came to the United States as a nurse on a work visa during the Vietnam War and met her current husband, says she thinks immigrants have changed over the years.
"There used to be a level of dignity and self-respect. They were hard-working people who wanted to contribute to American society because it was better than where they came from," says Gaines, a petite woman in her 70s. "But our government has been giving them handouts for so long that now they expect them."
Gaines says SB 1070 mirrors federal law on fortifying the borders, allowing local officials to enforce immigration law in a manner that the federal government should have been doing all along.
"We as Americans have the right to defend this country's laws. There's nothing racist about protecting the country," she says.
Payan, originally from Puerto Rico, hopes the law will deter future illegal immigration.
"I hope it stops trespassers and lets people know the law is the law and you cross that border illegally, it's a crime," she says.
Payan has also been called "traidora," or traitor, by neighbors in her primarily Hispanic neighborhood who know how she feels about illegal immigrants.
"They know how I feel. I don't hide my feeling," she says. "I've already had by apartment broken into and had my car hit by an illegal. What more do I have to lose?"
