Just curious how far would ya'll go on restoring and fixing up a salvage title fox. I just picked my son up salvaged title LX. He is pretty gung ho about it and has already used his own money to order a carpet kit, lock set and some small stuff. I know there is the pride in ownership and he is using his own earned cash to fix it up (with my help). But I am wondering if at some point I should step in and tell him to stop putting cash into it because of the salvage title?

If your son is eager to learn about cars, I would encourage him to work on it.

We never get back what we put into these cars, and that is especially true for salvaged cars.

For me, the only way I buy a salvaged car is if it costs 50% of what I would pay for a clean title car (with everything else being equal). Also, I would avoid putting too much dough into it unless I was ready to remove that parts and return the car back to stock before I sell in the future.

The buyer pool for salvaged cars is small, but it grows as the price drops significantly. Just be prepared for that. [patriot]

He basically got it for free. Lee towed it to us, so he is in it for tow charge so far basically. I figure I may throw some paint on it, grab a good interior and go from there. It has really low miles too. But yea his is eager to learn and do for himself.

good point...I didnt plan on taking it. but just informing him not to put too much into it. But I dont wanna do that necessarily, dont wanna cheapen his experience or lessen his excitement.

The momment we modify our cars it is already a bad investment and even if he puts 1k or even 10k into the car it's for our enjoyment, bonding time for you and your son, and it's a learninbig experience. You can't really put a price tag on that.

I know have poured a ton of money on my first car/mustang. I know I can't get what I put into it but I'll never sell it. Finacially, I looked at is as... I could either be using my extra money going to bars, clubs, movies, traveling, but instead I chose to put it on my car. I only use rainy day money and never dip into savings or credit cards.

let him have some fun with it!
salvage is ok as long as it doesn't
have major frame damage like front end going
left and rear going right. if its stolen recovery who cares it his first FIFTY.
jus let him know if he decides to sell he might not get full price unless he builds a bad ass fox then someone mite cough it up, but then again he aite gonna wanna sell this one, his first love jus let him have fun i know its killing you cause u know better but your pops just guide him threw the build as you would do it jus my .02 [Razz]

Mustangs aren't usually the best first car. I say as long as he respects what a car like that even in stock form is capable of doing and he is safe with it the car will be a great experience. Also he must no the value of the car versus what he will be putting into it must be worth it to him as far as it making him happy. Good luck to him always great to have a newcomer to our great hobby

I don't see anything wrong with letting him put money into it, because he can always find a clean titled fox later and swap the good stuff onto that one...

One thing to keep in mind is, I don't think you can get full coverage on a salvage titled car...so God forbid but if it gets stolen, he will not be able to recover anything which will be a double disappointment for him.

extra good point there. Even in its current form, the first mods are all the theft proctection I can throw at it. Kill switches, alarm, removable steering wheel...blah blah..

N8 if ur kids r anything like u respect for the cars won't even be an issue. I would just set a limit as far as where is too far to go with the car because it is a bad economy and thieves don't give a damn about ur hard earned money

I might give him a limit. And at which point tell him just to drive the car for a certain period of time before he goes dumping more money into it. Might also have him invest his money into the brakes, tires, suspension before you let him touch the motor outside of your basic tune-up/repair items. Fox's are poor in terms of handling the power they have stock. Plus it will give him a chance to learn to control what that car has. Seen a lot of wrapped up fox's from newer drivers.

yea the engine wont probably ever be modded. But yea the other stuff will definitely be taken care (brakes, chassis stiffening...). Plus there will be a trial period with the car where I will only let him drive certain places and he definitely has to keep his grade up. Or you WILL see it in the Ford Sale section...lol

n8. i'd let him go as far as he wanted with it.. as long as he knows he will never get anything close to what he put in it.. who cares... i understand from your point as father.. i wouldn't let my daughter fix up a pos that unsafe to drive.. but if she found a clean salvage car that she likes... why not.. Well, I had a few Salvage title vehicles over the years that I have dumped a ton of money into and I dont see it being a problem. I have a friend, who just dumped $10K into a salvaged 66 Impala and it is show quality, has won a few Trophies with it and has been offered double on his investment and the buyers knew it was a salvage title.

I'd have him invest the money in safety stuff obviously and then anything above that I'd have him do upgrades that can be removed. If he decides later to change to a different car he can move some of the stuff with him or resell it to get some of the cash back so he doesn't loose a ton because of the title.

I say just "advise" him, after that let him learn a lesson or two.

It wont make or break him or you if he dumps a few grand into it over a long period of time.

What can be gained? Time with pop, learning some in's and out's about cars, kickin himself in the ass for changin the rims three times, or exhaust four times, money management, priorites, etc.

In this case it could be a salvaged car or a new car...same question would apply.

Big picture Nate. [patriot]

I wouldn't have him put a ton of money into it most people wreck there 1st car. My first car/stang lasted 6 months wasn't my fault tho got T bonned. But I had put a lot of money into a car that I pretty much just took a loss on.

Ok so coming from your son’s point of view. I was 15 when I got my first and only mustang, so far. I was going through the same thing your son is. I was excited especially since I was coming from a family of owning 5.0s. Mine was salvaged but no damage and it was all stock 1990 gt, and my dad told me not to put money into it. So I got a paintjob we had ponies I threw them on. Then I ordered carpet, reupholstered the seats, pretty much transformed the car. The whole time I knew I wasn’t going to get any money out of it but kept on adding onto the car for my enjoyment car sits with a bad tranny and it sucks for me because I can’t drive it. Even as a salvage I plan on rebuilding the tranny myself as experience. Every time my dad bugged me about not modding it I would get upset but it didn’t stop me from getting lowering springs etc. I knew I would get no money out of it but I loved working on it esp. when my dad would give me a hand. After all that money spent in a salvage I do not regret it. Probably because it’s a nice car with a strait body. I never planned on selling it either. Most of all it is MY car and has sentimental value. And it’s getting to show quality.

To wrap it up just let him know he wont get much out of it and if he understands that and doesn’t mind let him go for it. btw ill try and post pics of mine before and after.

I just kinda told him about that. But he was like "its cool, I dont plan on selling it anyway". He went on to say "It is my first car, not my last, plus you got it for me dad. That is worth more than any part I can put on the car". Needless to say I almost started crying...lol. Then I manned up and spoke to him like the dad from That 70's Show...hahaha.

haha yeah thats exactly what we went through although it will still hurt to see the money go onto the salvage for a while. at least it hurt my dad everytime he saw me put money into it but after a while he stopped worrying.

I think you have to ask your son (and yourself) what the purpose of the car will be. If I was to buy a salvage car simply for transportation, I think I would restrain myself from dumping a huge amount of money into it. Also, I you might want to think on weather your son will want another car in the future. If selling is an option later on in the near future, then I would say to not dump much into it.
