The reality of the situation is that we live in a society where the only acceptable course of action is to:
1.) Call the police
2.) Video tape it for legal evidence
3.) Wait for the police to arrive
If you try to do anything physical to the wife, you will end up in jail and the biggest losers will be the kids, followed by you and your wife.
The only other prudent options I see in addition would be to bring the kids in the house so they don't have to witness it... Last possibility would be to hog tie her for restraint which would have a very fine line between retraint and assault.
We also don't know the whole story. What happened to cause her to go crazy like that? Regardless, doing that in front of the kids suggests that she is irresponsible enough and mentally unstable enough to warrant having those kids removed from her care.
Everyone loses in this kind of situation.
