***SPECIAL THANKS TO NORCAL MOTORSPORTS IN SACRAMENTO, CA FOR ALL THEIR HELP!!***

Well, I finally got a real motor for the '67. Here's a few pics, I'll try and update them as I go with the install.

...1967 Mustang Coupe, previously running a roller 302 with moderate cam, roller rockers and otherwise stock internals.

Just purchased a 418 from Ford Performance Solutions, fully forged bottom-end, hydraulic roller cam, CNC Ported Avenger 225 heads with 2.08 valves, canton deep sump oil pan, fully race-prepped block, sfi balancer and flex-plate, Victor Jr up top with Hooker Super comp coated headers and 900cfm Holley Pro-Jection. Motor should put out 580-590 horse when dialed-in. We'll see.

Other mods include subframe connectors, shelby t-bars, 4-wheel disk, Lincoln 8.8 rear with auburn, aftermarket axles and 3.73's,'05-08 bullit wheels, Will be running a complete 3" exhaust with x-pipe.

Coming Soon... Roll cage, cowl hood, 5-point harnesses and slicks. [Smile]

A few newer pics, the rest are from start to finish, ENJOY!

looks like a 8.8 from the picture.... i want to do the 8.8 swap, but it's just a little bigger than stock 8" and i dont want to buy new rims for the offset difference

Nice looking car/engine. 580hp is a very optimistic guess, but it'll be a ton of fun for sure regardless.

Those guys at FPS are hella cool. Went their with some friends to check them out a few years ago and they looked like a good shop. I'd like to have them do a short block for me down the road.

One last thing what kind of tranny do you have and is it a solid roller or hyd cam? Either way its gonna get down [burnout]

Pulled the old motor today, woohoo! I HOPE to have the new motor in next weekend. I'm going to take advantage of the motor being out so I can do some engine bay cleanup, rewiring, etc.

BTW, anyone have a good price on port-matching and hogging-out my Victor JR intake a bit?

I will be redoing it and I've been thinkin.... The 3" x 12" Race bullet mufflers I'm planning on putting on are going to be insane loud. Anyone have any experience with these? I'm really thinking about getting a set of the stainless Ultra-Flo's instead. I will have turn-downs in front of the axles.

Anyone have any 3" stainless Ultra Flo's For sale?

since I got the motor already assembled I decided to look in the cylinders with a scope. Pistons are Flat tops for sure. I thought they may have been dished since I was told it was a lower compression setup. I'll have to look into what size the combustion chambers are. This thing may have more compression than I thought. ....Not that I'm complaining or anything.

Nice project! One muffler I really like on a built motor is the Borla XR-1. They sound unique, no "me too" Flowmaster sound.

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

I'll have to do a search for a sound-clip, something close to my application.

I think it's interesting that a lot of people are going back to the "packed" mufflers, and even combining them with chambers. I think flowmasters had their day, it was a great day, just tired of 'em. I did however like the old single-chambers, a bit obnoxious but kinda cool.

I got my intake gaskets today, the BIG trick-flow ones fit the head ports perfect.

I decided to get started on the port-matching since this intake is off another motor and far smaller.

I set the gaskets up on the heads, dropped the intake down in position, snugged the bolts, marked exactly where the intake sets on the gaskets, removed it all, mocked the gaskets up to the intake, and scribed the ports for port-matching. The ports should be damn close if not perfect when it's all done.

I'm going to need to remove a LOT of material from the intake~! It's amazing how the little things like this make a difference.

comming out nice. What do you expect it to run?

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Thanks! I have not a clue. I'm going to take it easy on it for a little while and get it all dialed in and run-in properly, install a strong/built c-4 in it, maybe a cage and better restraint system, and some better tires, etc. Then I'll be taking it to the track. The motor came a little premature so everything else isn't quite up to par yet.

Take your time with it and dont go cheap on safety [Wink] . Just get them pockets ready cause you are going to be in for a bumpy ride on it

Not looking forward to the pocket-book part but it'll be nice when it's all set up and ready for the track, that's for sure. Definitely will be doing it all myself so there wont be any labor costs involved.

Got the headers today, Hooker Super Comp 1 3/4" coated 6208-1. They are definitely nice, tuned also. I did not know it but they have a few removable primary tubes (one on each side) with slip-joints for easy installation around the shock-towers, probably more equipped for the '65-66 chassis than the '67. We'll see how they fit.

Anyone ever dealt with these slip-joints on headers before? I assume you have to weld them up but I'm tempted to just use a bunch of red RTV since they are a pretty snug-fit with almost 2" of inserted tube with plenty of sealing area. If anyone has dealt with these before I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Any advice is cool, and NO the instructions don't give any advice on how to seal them up after/during the install.

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

It's coming along quite well but slower than intended. Customers come first and we only stay late a few days a week. I got the old trans out today and completely detailed and painted the engine bay (used undercoating/bedliner type coating on this one as it was pretty beat-up) It came out really nice! That stuff looks really good if you lay it down right, and it hides a LOT of imperfections, and it fills small holes, etc.

Removed the old trans and started getting the new stuff ready to install. As soon as I get the motor and trans bolted together I'm putting them in.

Threw up some after pics of the engine bay and the intake port-match job.

Got the motor and trans in today!

Also test fit the headers, they fit BEAUTIFULLY.

I pulled them out for some port-matching and after that I'll be putting everything back together and gettin this baby running.

VERY IMPRESSED WITH MARCH PERFORMANCE!

Installed all the accessories/serpentine setup, etc. It came out VERY NICE! Everything fit perfectly, no shimming or anything, and all the pulleys lined right up. I used the March Fox-Body 351W PS and ALT brackets. (Note: I do have the 5.0 reverse rotation water pump, required for the brackets to line up correctly)

The only mod I had to make was due to the 100 amp alternator. I had to either relocate or elongate a hole in the upper-most adjusting bracket for clearance of the huge alt case. I chose the relocation route for a cleaner look and I was able to thread the hole instead of using a nut on the back.

I took my time and it only took a few hours including the mod to the bracket.

Easy, and quite possibly the best serpentine brackets available for 351W. Hands-Down. Only cost $160 for both sides and totally worth it, and they get rid of the automatic tensioner. I already had the march 5.0 under-drive pulley set (can't remember price) and a 62" serpentine belt right off the shelf worked perfect.

Got the headers installed.

Installed custom gauges into a stock/deluxe bezel.

Completely redesigned the fuel system and hooked it up to the Pro-Jection and ran return line.

Upgraded transmission cooler lines to AN fittings and braided line.

It's all finally coming together!

Cooling system, shifter, electrical, exhaust, and she'll be ready to fire.

900 CFM Throttle-Body Injection from Holley. Mine is the old analog kit and is good for about 550 Horsepower max when running over 15 psi fuel pressure. The newer ones look basically the same as far as the throttle-body but are completely digital and can be programmed via lap-top. As a result the new ones usually yield a bit more horsepower and much better drivability. I decided to use this since I already had it.

It ran really good on my mildly built 302 but too rich for such a small motor. It was kinda all or nothin, not the greatest drivability-wise, but added a ton of power at full-throttle versus my Holley 600! They are made for 300 horsepower absolute minimum or they run very rich. I added the O2 sensor to mine, which helps out as far as drivability, but I may not need it with the larger motor. We'll see.

I should probably get a picture of that actually, see I needed to test the system on the old motor first and I didn't want it to be permanent or spend a ton of money so I pulled out the gas filler neck and drilled/tapped it for a pipe-fitting-hose-barb, then coated the threaded area with gas tank repair epoxy for extra strength. Attached a rubber hose to the barb and viola!

It worked so well I just ran the permanent -6 Braided line to it and called it good. There was a hole already in the floor of the trunk back by the leaf spring shackle that the hose fit through perfectly.

For those of you that don't like this idea you can spend over $100 on a new "return-line equipped" sending unit assembly and go that route. I think you get those from Mustangs Plus or something like that. They are a nice unit, just expensive. I decided to go the cheap route and it works great. Saved myself over $100. plus the labor of draining the tank and installing a complete sending unit [Smile]

I'd recommend wheels from a 1994-2004 Mustang with 1" spacers on the front and 1.25" or wider on the rear. That seems to work good on a stock-width suspension on a '67 with front disks and rear drums. You can play with the rear a bit and use different width to compensate for stance, tire width, etc.

Here's all the info I have on it...

My setup is a bit different since I have a full-width 8.8 rear. I do not run spacers on the back since the 8.8 is a lot wider than stock. Also, all 4 of my wheels are from a 2005-2008 Mustang. The higher offset (narrower stance) of the 2005+ Mustang wheel is required on my setup to clear the rear outer fenderwells with the wider 8.8. Because of the narrower rim stance I run a 1.25" spacer up-front and I did have to grind the upper arms just a little near the ball-joints so they wouldn't rub on the inside of the wheel. (plenty of material to grind-on, no worries)

There are 2 different Ford wheel offsets to choose from depending on the year of the donor car, One's a +50-something and one is a +40-something I believe. 1994-2004 (the lesser number) stick out more than the 2005-2009, by about 3/4 of an inch.

If you're running stock-width suspension on a '67 you'll need a 1" spacer in the front when using the '94-2004 wheels, and probably a 1.25" spacer for the '05-'09 wheels, and may have to grind on your upper control arms just a tad like I did so they don't rub. The '94-2004 wheel is a better choice with the 1" spacer so you don't have to grind on the arms. Like I said prior you can play with different sized rear wheel spacers a bit to compensate for tire width, etc. The front is way more critical.

Hope this helps.

This was a pain in the butt...

In order to mount the plastic gauge bezel to the dash I had to utilize part of the original steel gauge back-side support. Required MUCHO hacking! It came out fairly clean though. I ground down all the cut areas and painted the frame black.

Also got the vacuum canister mounted (much needed for the cam I'm running) and got the ignition box and coil ready to install(using Crane Cams digital CD style Hi-6 with adjustable stage rev-limiting and multiple-spark)

YES, it's a special type of rubberized undercoating we have down at the shop that has a special applicator for a more uniform/fine finish. Kindof a new thing we're doing for cars with tore-up engine bays. We did mine with the factory semi-gloss first and it didn't come out good at all, just too hacked up, dinged, scratched, full of little holes, etc. It was too far gone. Mine is the second or third car we've used this stuff on and so far its really good stuff. It's reappliable, doesn't fog or over-spray, fills small holes (even some larger holes, etc). Good Stuff

Here's a few updated pics....

I was actually able to shut the hood with the air cleaner off (barely) but I'm still cutting the hood.

The hood lightly rested on the air cleaner stud which could still be trimmed just enough to clear. If I really needed to I could probably make this thing work without cutting a hole in the stock hood.

I plan on using a 1" spacer and/or nitrous plate in the near future, and I like the colder air getting into the engine, so the hole in the hood and the scoop will definitely be necessary for my application.

HOOD SCOOP INSTALLED ..Its a little small but it will work for now. You can get these in 2 sizes, and I decided to do the smaller one first to see if I like the style. The larger one is 4" wider and 8" longer. Looks like I'll be going with the larger one, this looks too small on my hood. I definitely like the Cobra Jet style though.

I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel! LOL.

I just devoted my entire day to wiring and I'm about 3/4 the way done.

...New fuse-box for all the added components (care of American Past-Times in Carmichael, CA), relays, braided ground strap (also care Of AP), Oxygen Sensor add-on kit for the Pro-Jection from Holley, relocating starter solenoid, modifying battery tray for a proper hold-down, hiding all wires, etc. Damn, what a project!

Posted by bwkelley76 (Member # 8792) on :

Under-Hood wiring is finally done! I ran into a few snags, the Holley Pro-Jection wiring turned out to be hacked in several areas so I spent a number of hours rewiring the complete main harness. 3 days completely devoted to wiring, I can't believe it!

It all came out pretty nice though, rerouted everything to the fenderwells for a cleaner look. HOLY CRAP the Injection main harness turned out to be 1 1/2" thick! Thank goodness that part of it is all behind the motor.

So basically now all I have to do is get the gauge cluster in, hook up the oil and temp sending units, hook up spark plug wires, add coolant, and I'll be firing this baby!

UPDATE... So as some of you may already know and some may not, we had an issue with one of the cylinder heads leaking coolant so we were unable to fire the motor.

Looks like it may have been caused from porosity or other imperfections in the casting near the spark plug holes.

[Frown]

I just sent the head back to FPS and he's sending me a new head at the end of this week.

If things work out right I'll have it all back together and will be firing the car sometime next week or the following. ....DAMN IT!

New head should be here next week, it's a lot of work to recondition the new head to match the older one. (Welding, removing freeze-plugs, polishing, port-matching, CNC Machining, matching valve stem heights, etc.) It's good Troy is taking the time necessary to make it a direct bolt-on for us. Heck of a guy.

ITS ALIVE! [Smile]

Got the head installed and I fired it up for a few seconds at the end of the day today, but unfortunately had a fuel leak on the throttle-body. [Frown]

It sounded healthy though, oil pressure is 75psi.

I'm going to get the fuel issue fixed in the morning, will be firing it up for an initial break-in, changing oil, setting timing, then installing exhaust. (all the usual fun-stuff)

I must admit, I'm beat! Long day. Its great to hear the thing run for a second though. It fired right up on the first try. That's how I like it.

Is the efi/carb set up with a base line tune out of the box? How dose this set up work? Do you need o2 sensors and stuff? I'll be curious to see how it all runs when it's done. Have fun with it
[burnout]

No O2 on the old analog setup I have, however it can be added.

It has adjusting screws on the brain box for choke, accellerator, idle, midrange, power 1, power 2. All screws in the middle is considered "baseline". Tuner/user adjusts accordingly.

They sell an add-on O2 sensor if you want it which takes over the idle and mid adjustments. I have purchased this and will be installing it soon.

The newer setups not only have O2 sensor but also have lap-top tunability. $1600.00 though, Not in my budget. :/

Holyphreakincrap! lol

Took it out for a maiden/tuning voyage today. Put about 20 miles on the motor.

Took it up to about 4700 RPM once in 2nd gear (very gradually) about half throttle and all I can say is DAMN.

I LOVE THIS MOTOR! Can't wait until its broke-in!

Here's a video from auto shop at school...

(Tim, the dude that filmed it is a bonified homie...lol, dudes a crack-up)

..He also took a second video of the undercarriage and you can hear the exhaust much better, he hasn't emailed it to me yet but I will post it as soon as I get it.

***Turn your sound way UP once engine starts.

Motor runs good but now I'm having some transmission problems. Just last night it started acting like it was low on transmission fluid (have to rev it up just a bit to get 1st gear to engage) so I pulled over and checked the fluid and it was fine. I added an extra 1/2 quart just to be sure. I let the car sit for about 20-30 minutes and when I fired it back up I had no forward gears. I checked and double-checked everything, linkage, lines, etc. Everything is good. I was able to get it into 1st gear after revving it up a few times and it was ok enough to get me home a few miles down the road. Fired it up tonight and same thing, no forward gears, not even when I rev it up now, and when I depress the trans-brake it goes into reverse instead of free-wheeling. Something is not right. [Frown] Looks like I may be pulling the transmission, NOT HAPPY.

Transmission situation isn't too horrible but definitely BROKEN. Apparently a spring in the forward clutch mechanism (and/or valve body)of the transmission broke and took out the forward clutches. Reverse was pretty toasted also and apparently the forward pressure-plate was so bad it needed a new one machined.

The trans is all rebuilt and back together with new racing clutches. I think it was put back in the car before T-Day and possibly tested. I haven't heard anything over the Holiday but I'm sure I'll know how it all works next week.

No extra charge for the spring and the plate so I'm really happy with that.

Thanks to Payless Trans and Clutch in Fresno, CA.

It's been one heck of a project this car, but well worth it. VERY HAPPY with the results. I must admit, it's more car than I ever thought it would be.

Crazy thing is after all this work I might be selling her [Frown]

Just found a car I've been wanting for some time, and well, all my money is wrapped up in this one.

So if things work out she may go or I may partially part her out.

..Asking $13,000 as-is or might sell just motor & trans separate, or might stick old motor/trans in it for a daily driver if someone wants to come up with CASH. $$$

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

Got a little work done on the car.

I've started on detailing the engine compartment, and I mean doing it right. I'm removing just about every nut and bolt and wire I possibly can. Everything I can possibly remove or get to is getting cleaned and/or repaint.

All I can say is I'm having a hard time with the "fate" of this car though....

The car is worth a lot of money if I return it to an "all original" status. However, I really would like to do some modifications. I mean come-on, what good is a '69 fastback if you can't have some fun with it?! LOL.

I've already pained the engine block black though, something about the ford blue just makes me want to gag.

pics coming soon

Do what makes you happy with the car. Ive got a 70 mach 1, lookinginto the stangaholics 70 shelby body kit with a griggs suspension setup and a late model shelby mod motor. Just about what makes you happy. But i gutted a 93 cobra too for a drag car. All about personal preferance and making the best with what you got.

being that I work in the industry I'm finding out that it's best to be able to sell something for "top dollar" if something better comes along. So I'm just trying to figure out if the car would be worth someday, let's say $30-$40k extremely customized, or maybe over $50k+ completely original and restored. ..Being that it's a rare bird. 10-20 grand is a BIG DIFFERENCE.

Hell if the car was just a plane jane fastback I wouldn't even care.

..so you can see my dilemma?
