I'm looking to get a family dog in the next few months and I was wondering what you guys thought would be a good dog to get.

I want a medium sized dog that doesn't shed a lot of hair (if any at all!). Im hoping for something around 60 lbs or less at full size and one that is kid-friendly...NO PITBULLS! I REALLY want a boxer, but I'm still thinking that they are slightly too large.

Any suggestions???

ive got an american bulldog shes about 80 lbs but short and super friendly and a great dog

Posted by SheerSliver03 (Member # 6589) on :

poodle is the only thing that wont really shed.

Id say go with a boarder collie if you have a big yard. it is the smartest dog breed in the world and protective of their family. but you have to make sure you socialize the dog with lots of people and get it used to water.

Labs are probably the best with kids. Very fun loving dogs, quick on their feet, friendly, and low maintenance.

I have a jindo she's about 48lbs, great with kids and other dogs. Only downside is she does shed and she's real smart.

boxers are good dogs all of he ones I've been around have been great dogs.

jack rusel's are small and full of energy to.

Get a Lab. One of the best breeds out there!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

TY: arent's american bulldogs pretty much like pitbulls? They look like nice dogs but 80 lbs. is a bit too big.

SheerSilver03: NOt really diggin the poodle [Big Grin] Also, we're living in a condo (has a balcony) so a border collie is out of he question...plus they have long hair and I really want one with short hair.

Essassin: Yea, labs are definitely the best dogs for kids. My biddy has a yellow lab and he's a really nice dog, but damn he's big. Looks like he's about 90 lbs or so...bit too large

Mitch: Staffordshires are in the "pitbull" family...not coll with a 2 yr old running around

Slowback: Whats a Jindo? I'm goign to have to google that one.

shes about 80lbs now and shes a lil bit spoiled and put some weight on after we got her fixed...if you get one get a female theyre much smaller than the males..they are part of the mastiff family so the boys get a lil bit large

When I googled "AMerican Bulldog" it came up with some that look like the one pictured (kind of like a white boxer) and some that looke dmore like pitbulls. Are they short like Eglish Bulldogs or more slim and tall like boxers?

thats about the best way to describe them is a boxer/pit mix..shes built very thick through the chest and very solid much like a pitbull but with the stubby face and personality of a boxer

Look into a Labadoodle... 1/2 lab 1/2 poodle.

My friends mom has one, hella cool dog, prob about 40lbs and cute as hell.

For your requirements I would advise against a Lab. They are huge dogs full grown, and are really hyper. Unless they are well trained and exercised well they can be a nusince. (well most dogs can fall into this catagory) But labs more so.

It really depends on how much u want to spend, but have you thought about saving a dog from a shelter. [patriot]

My next dog is either gonna be a basenji (smart as hell and doesnt bark) or a bull terrier [worship]

I was thinking of an English bulldog or Boston terrier also. They're smaller in size and probably don't require as much space and exercise as labs, boxers, or American bulldogs. I live in a condo and not having a yard where the dog can run will play a big role in the dog I choose to get.

Posted by essasin (Member # 4741) on :

English bulldogs are awesome dogs and great in condos but not active enough for me. I went out on a walk with an english bulldog in the evening in Vegas and halfway through I had to carry the dog back on my shoulder because he was huffing and puffing.

I wouldn't let living in a condo or general characteristics of dogs and their personalities stop you from getting a dog you really want. I am a firm believer that with enough attention and love any dog is suitable.

I know a rot who lives in a NY apartment and gets taken out in the morning and at night. She's one of the most well mannered dogs I have seen with children. My little cousin will tug at its scruff around its neck and put their hand in its mouth and the dog handles it well. But you wouldn't believe the extent of time and patience that was needed to teach the dog apartment living and get her into a routine.

got to your local human society and pick up a mutt that suits you, usually $50 spayed or neutered with first set of shots. Pure breds are always iffy depending on the breed humans don't know how to play god with genetics that was pure breds have something f***ing problems.
Labs-hips, bulldogs-everything, etc.

I've had 3 labs over the years and all were retarded. I have 2 pure bread Beagles right now and those are great dogs. The female is 8 months old and our male is 11 months old and they are both the best family dogs. Beagles have a reputation of howling but my male never barks or really makes noise and the female will bark when we play but nothing bad at all. I had the female trained to sit, speak, lay down and roll over at 10 weeks old, they are super smart. They are also very loyal and chill with all people, kids and animals.

Yo sydeways next time I see him with the dog out I'll talk to him and snap a few pics. But when I asked him what the breeds are is a pug and mastiff that they just breeded over and over til it got smaller and looked more like a bull mastiff. He's 6mos at 15lbs.

boston terriers and french bulldogs are great choices also they have great personalities..i just cant remember what they said on dogs 101 about the bostons and kids, i dont think it was bad tho

actually rotweilers believe it or not are the best dog with kids it seems you dont want a bully bread dog because of the stigma or tag people put on the dogs but pitbulls, rots, dobermans, are all great dogs it all depends on the owner. I own a pitbull and he's better behaved and listens more than any lab or golden retriever its just on the owner but you can't go wrong with that bull dog bro anyways good luck on your search.

Thanks for all the pics and input guys! Although I really want a big dog, I had to be realistic with my family's lifestyle and living space...so we decided to get a Boston Terrier puppy [Big Grin]

I always thought they looked cool...like mini Boxers in a way, but never really knew if they were good "family" dogs. After researching them a bit, it turned out that they are great with kids and very loyal to their family.

So my wife, daughter, and I went out to Los Banos last night and met up a breeder from Fresno (he was nice enough to hook up half way [patriot] ). We chose from a litter of 4 (3 females and 1 male) and decided to go with the most outgoing female with nicer markings. The other 2 females were really shy and timid...the one we chose came to us when we called for her, so she seemed to be the smartest and most fun. According to the breeder, the males are harder to train and messier, so we decided to stick to choosing a female.

Unfortunately we didnt take her home last night, but will be meeting with the breeder again next wednesday to pick her up!

Here's a couple pics of the puppies..

Mine is the one all the way to the left in the picture...

I was never really picky about the markings as long as it had the "right" markings that this breed is supposed to have...but luckily the female that we chose has the best markings out of the litter. She has the white front legs and white going around half of her back...really nice looking.

The Belgian Malinois is the best dog to get. theyre like German Shepards but more compact and less prone to problems such as hip displasia and such. They are very smart and you can get a female thats 55lbs.

There aren't many breeds that don't shed. Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs or any of the poodle cross breeds. Someone mentioned Labradoodle and I think that's a great suggestion. All the ones I've seen are medium sized and good dogs. Smart dogs too.
