Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home at 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took him to the hospital, Ruda told The Times.

[Updated at 2:12 p.m.: Paramedics were called to a home in the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard. Jackson had rented the Bel-Air home for $100,000 a month. It was described as a French chateau estate built in 2002 with seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces and a theater.

The home is about 2 1/2 miles, about a six-minute drive, from UCLA Medical Center. An earlier version of this post incorrectly described the time to travel between the home and hospital as two minutes.]

The news comes as Jackson, 50, was attempting a comeback after years of tabloid headlines, most notably his trial and acquittal on child molestation charges.

In May, The Times reported that Jackson had rented the Bel-Air residence and was rehearsing for a series of 50 sold-out shows in London's O2 Arena. Jackson had won the backing of two billionaires to get the so-called "King of Pop" back on stage.

His backers envision the shows at AEG's O2 as an audition for a career rebirth that could ultimately encompass a three-year world tour, a new album, movies, a Graceland-like museum, musical revues in Las Vegas and Macau, and even a "Thriller" casino. Such a rebound could wipe out Jackson's massive debt.

This man was not only famous here, but loved all around the world. His music spanned generations, and he was arguably the best performer on earth.

I agree... Show some respect. Micheal was one of the best entertainers of all time & his music is timeless.... "Off the wall" & "thriller" are 2 of the best albums of all time IMO...

So you need to be in bed with him to be upset about his crime? How does that shit make sense? You want to give him the benefit of doubt? Your accused once I could see there being a chance it didn't happen but as many times as people have accused him there's no doubt it happened. He kept getting away with it by paying people off. While I wasn't a fan of his music, I agree with the fact that he was very talented but nothing entertaining he did will make up for molesting kids..... NOTHING.

It's a terrible thing to molest a child and I hope all who rape/molest anyone should burn in hell.

But there is always a possibility someone just wanted to get some money out of him so they made something up. But its also possible he really did do it. My argument is that we don't know for sure. Do we?

Would the courts have allowed him to be set free and not go to jail if he did something like this?

Of course the court wouldn't set a guilty person free as they're perfect and never make mistakes or get bought I actually never follow the hole deal but people get set free all the time even if they're guilty mistakes, not enough evidence, and even corruption with in the court system.

wow some people here can be really ignorant, insensitive and over all lame. He did a lot that needs forgiving yes. He also did more than just about anyone through humanitarian efforts. His music transcended other genres, other cultures, other countries... He is basically your favorite artists favorite artist. And yes music would not be music as it is today without him.

Some of us are insensitive about his death but I don't see how that makes us ignorant. I don't understand how people can come here and post their love for this guy but we who don't like him aren't expected to post their opinion. Its sad when people can assess the severity of a crime based on a person's talent. Some of us are insensitive about his death but I don't see how that makes us ignorant. I don't understand how people can come here and post their love for this guy but we who don't like him aren't expected to post their opinion. Its sad when people can assess the severity of a crime based on a person's talent. I'll bet the day Michael Richards dies the post will be flooded with comments of hate about him being a racist..... all over one word. MJ touched little kids and its no big deal because he was a "super star"..... nice. People use the argument like "you weren't there so how do you know" to claim the chance of innocence but I can reverse the same saying to claim he's guilty.
What exactly did he do as far as humanitarian efforts? If it was shit like that douche Bono does for the world its pointless. Ok, he went to some third world countries and made little Oum Fu Fu smile by patting him on the head? I think these boner celebs that get paid big money to go on a TV show or show up at some event to solicit money from the public to help others is chicken shit. Even the famous people that donate money to these causes are only doing it for the tax break most of the time.

If one of your kids walked up to you and said someone touched them I have a feeling you would be out for blood, I know I would. I don't care if its Mike Tyson or some 90 year old man next door I'm going to come out swinging. Could you look into your son or daughters face, see their pain and decide because the person that hurt them was famous you should forgive it? Not me, I'm sorry.

Exactly, if he would of touched one of your kids would you have took some money and forgot about it or would you of said fuck it and tryed to put him away for a long time, point being i think the parents of the kids was just out for money in the first place. He was aroung thousands of kids and only what 3 said he touched them and it just so happened all of there parent took the money instead of putting him away.

You are right if it hit home and was my kids yes I would have went through with the trial. But also if IF was a fifth we'd all be drunk right? But no one still addressed my point that through his humanitarian efforts he has helped hundreds, have the simple things in life that we take for granted (food, medicines, shelter, education). Mankind is flawed so I am sure he is flawed and needs forgiveness in Gods eyes for something.

But since his name is even mentioned in the same sentence would be enough to prosecute him in my eyes. But notice I said prosecute or persecute. You guys are persecuting the man in the court of public opinion. Which in my eyes showed very small mindedness.

This might be the first time we are on the same page we will have to see how things play out.... I am a big fan of his hits in the 80's mostly... Before all he kid drama. Is true we can't say if he did it and it is wrong to joke about him( I still do it ) but he has been through a lot in life. It's to bad his life ended the way it has.
