IMO, if you can swing spending a little bit more. You can get the Nikon D40 at best buy for
$474.95. It's a great entry level DSLR.
I just got the nikon D60 and love it.
But if your looking for a good point and shoot for a little less money, then I would go with a Canon Powershot.

At the $250 level the Canon SD880 is a great compact camera. Here's a review:

If you want reveiews on the Nikon D40 at double the price you're looking at, look no further than our resident photo whore, EPIK. He has more pictures of a Red Mach 1 than Ford themselves.

Good looking camera, have you used it before?
The Cannon SD880 looks like it has some great reviews as well. The Nikon D40 is out of the price range. I just want a point and shoot. I've seen Epik's photos and they look great but i can justify spending that much for the amount that i will use it.
Keep the reviews/suggestions coming in. Thanks

No, but I did a google search and it has great reviews and the price is great at $250 from costco, anywhere else is over $350.

I just got a Canon SD1100 for 159 at circuit city. I love it because its so small. Perfect for point and shoot. That one from costco looks too big. You couldnt just drop it in your pocket and go.
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html has good info.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ great prices.

I would recommend the Panasonc Lumix TZ5. Great point and shoot camera with 10.1 megapixel. Along with a 3" screen and HD recording, never know when that would come in handy, like recent events on NYE. Check it out! When I get he I'll see where there are deals.

Depends on what you want, if you're looking for top picture quality get a digital SLR with a real lens, such as the Nikon D-series with something like a Tamron lens. If you just want a portable camera, I have the Casio Exilim, it's 10 MP and the smallest camera I've found. It's pocket sized so I carry it everywhere and it takes great pictures. Radio Shack has it for about $100 (I think it was on sale over the holidays).

I just got back from costco and the price is actually $350 minus the $50 coupon so = $300, I'll mostly still buy it, I just forgot my membership it's already expired, I'll let you know if I buy it over the weekend.

+ 1. I have the D40 and a powershot SD750, and I love them both for what they are.

Somehow I knew my name would get mentioned in this thread LOL!!!
I agree with the others, The Nikon D40 is a great entry level DSLR, I use it most of the time when I take pics. But usually I carry around the camera that BCINGU was referring to, the Casio Exilim 10.1 MP. It takes very sharp pictures & is alot easier to use than a DSLR...
To be honest, I know some of my pics come out pretty good with the Nikon, but I am a novice & really have no idea how to use anything on the camera besides the exposure volume....LOL!!! I got mine from a pawn shop with no instruction manual....
These were taken with my Casio Exilim...

Imo, its pretty hard to work with if u have never used one or have photography experience. Alot of your pictures will come out over/under exposed until u get the hang of it. I still dont know what Im doing most of the time, but I just wing it & see what comes out. It probably would help if I had a manual. What are your plans as far as what will u mostly be using it for?

Thanks.....
If you are patient enough to practice & figure it out, then its a great camera to have, but I think my Casio takes pretty good pictures for a point & shoot. Its also easier to carry around & MUCH easier to use...
