Well I almost settled on a Tacoma. But......I made the mistake and test drove that v10 dodge truck. And it slapped me in that face with the power.

Still out of my price range the v10 was. But I am looking at used trucks 03-99 relatively low miles and around the 12k range. And was wondering if you fine gentlemen wouldnt mind sharing your experience, advice or knowledge with me.

I am look for any recall issues to avoid on certain models, any pitfalls to avoid....anything actually. I am not partial to the maker. Ford, chevy, dodge.....dont matter.

Fire away

Please, I know my budget isn't great, but thats all wifey ear marked for me (its hard owning a house without a truck).

V10s will put a huge dent in your gas bill. If you really want all that power, get a diesel. Otherwise, the V8 full size trucks all seem to do quite well.

Lightning are around the 10-12k range? hmmmm. Kinda looking for a dual cab or xtra cab, whatever it is called.

I was patronizing these heathens...lol.

Wife wants me to get the tacoma. But after driving that big truck, the tacoma felt rather wimpy.

Are you looking for a used or new truck?

You can never go wrong with a Toyota. My dad has one and has pretty much done nothing as far as maintanence and it still runs like a champ. I use to have a little nissan pickup and also needed no maintainence. Although those have no power.

what about an 02-03 ford supercrew? those are around 12k or so full four door you can use for towing, home depot/dump runs etc.

i dont know if you have kids, but they will be comfortable in the back too [Smile]

I picked up my '01 F350 PSD for $8K.
Threw on a couple mods & am now getting 19mpg city, 21mpg highway. The truck is no slouch. Before I was done modding it put down 265RWHP....at 2800RPM on our dyno. That's over 500RWTQ BTW.....

It's a solid 15 second truck.....given it's 2wd & doesn't hook.

There's really nothing like a 4wd launch at 25+PSI..... & 20MPG highway.

Diesel is expensive, but you'll be hard pressed to find a 3/4-1 ton in your price range that gets 20mpg hwy.....let alone will roast the tires at will.

Don't get me wrong, it's no Lightning!
Just a straight-up work horse.
But I wouldn't trade it for anything twice the price. Best damn vehicle I've owned.

Go with a Toyota for reliability. I had a '89 Toyota Pickup and it's still putting along at 210k @ regular maintenance intervals.

Co-workers V8 Tacoma doesn't change SHIT on it and it's still running at 90+K. Drives it to Arizona and back on a regular basis.

Motor Trend did a truck shootout with all the big name trucks, the Toyota won truck-of-the-year or something.

I'd get a Lightning myself though they are too sexy..

I actualy thought you were "really" successful and I dont mean "millions" as successful but............ a 12k truck? I dont know what kind of junk youll end up with but were in 09. Forget the 10yr old junk, step up, son... OK, DRAMA aside, what exactly do you need a truck for? Torque, hauling and power are all different, do you need a big pay load? If you just want a truck bed to haul normal household stuff get a lil 2wd toyota 88 and up 1k-3k. Fords f150's and f250's are nice 97 and up, if youre gonna drive it more than just hauling crap. Are you gonna 4x4 up trails then camp with this new rig? Theres so many questions to ask for a truck. Let us know what youre gonna do with it.

L8 you are killing me!!!!! Tacoma and be done with it. Don't do v10 anything in a truck they are all pieces of shit. And the viper truck it out of your price range. Bottom line is small truck Toyota and big truck Dodge (cummins). End of story Laurie.

Posted by N8 (Member # 6048) on :

Yea the viper truck is out of my range as I said, but it kinda skewed my sight on the Tacoma. 12k is my price point because well, that is what my wife set it at...lol. No need to step my game up, keeping up with the Jones's is for the youngsters.

But yea I will mainly use it for pulling jet ski's, home depot runs, landscape supply runs. I was going to use it for promotions stuff but we went with a xB for for that (I know, I know...its a scion... dont give me shit about it, but the van does well with the brand).

oh and yes I have 5 boys 8-14 so at time I have to haul their carcasses around. With footbal equipment, bikes..... SO yes the xtra cab is a must. And to Dave50 5-boys is also why 12k is my price point. [Big Grin] The can make you broke real quick.

Get a Tacoma, I had one and will hold its value compared to anything else out there. I had an 02 tacoma V6 ext. cab 4x4. that was a solid truck, with no warranty issues. Now I have an 05 4runner for the family. I am sold on toyota's, for quality/reliable, and keeps its value. Any Domestic truck, you will spend money when they have about 100k miles on them. Mostly transmissions!
Good luck!

I suffer from serious A.D.D when it comes to making purchases. You should see me TV shopping [Eek!]

Toyota has always been the best small truck. Nothing even remotely close. You may think I'm biased because I'm a Yota guy. But hell everyone on this ford site is telling you to get the Taco. So what does that tell you! BTW, I benched 225 for 30 reps last week [Smile]

Posted by N8 (Member # 6048) on :

DAMN 30 times!!!!!.....that is hella strong. I am still floating around 20-25 times. And still benching 405 (Im stuck there). I actually dont bench much anymore. I only do it for attention now...lol. I am on dumbbells for chest primarily.

the Tundra v8 is pretty beefy

I love my '07 F150 XLT 5.4L. I looked at and test drove all of the V8 trucks– even the Chevys. I did consider the 4 pot Tacoma for about 90 seconds. I just had to get a Ford.

I love the way the new fords look. But out of budget for me. Test drove a Silverado yesterday, they let me even keep it overnight which I found weird. I kinda like it as well. Sorry Cummins....lol. You would think with this small budget it would be easy.

I ended grabbing a 99 Dodge truck from someone. Got it for a steal with relatively low miles. I'll post pics later on.

Saved enough $$$ to possibly buy my jet-ski and or some rims for the truck [Big Grin]

Yea I know, but had I went the other way I would have a car payment. PLus now I can spend the extra cash in other places. I'll get pics soon.

But its a:

1999 Dodge 1500
2wd automatic
single cab
5.4 v8

I could not resist for the price. Plus had all receipts from maintenance, rebuilt engine, steros system..... I'll see about pics.

ok cool. At least it came with a rebuilt engine because if it didn't you'd be doing that on your own dime. I have 3 dodge trucks and I love them all, but again they are powered by the almighty cummins. Man I just love that name!!!
