Yeah I know this is a ford forum but as always we sometimes have deviated from our norm.

Well I'm thinking about getting a c5 vette to daily drive. Can't afford a c6 right now since I'm looking to purchase another home. [Frown]

Have any of you had a c5? pros and cons?

Would you recomend it to someone? I'm not too worried about space I usually travel alone or just one other occupant. Dont' have any kids and carry a maximum of 2 bags when traveling.

How are they on long trips? What do I need to look for? or watch out for?

I just like the idea of 20+ mpg with plenty of umph. Because the 12.5 mpg of premium gas the trucks are getting kinda sucks balls.

Do vettes use only premium or can the ls1 engine run on regular without pinging?

don't give the ls1 87 octane, that's a no-no. C5 vette's will get over 30 MPG cruising the highway in 6th gear.

My friend has an 04' Z06 that he daily drives. It's bone stock, runs a low 13 quarter mile, and according to the message center it gets 30 mpg in sixth gear on the freeway.

If he has an 04 zo6 that runs low 13's he is either a horrible driver or something is wrong with his car

no your wrong...they run like a 12.8 or 9 with a pro driver.....low 13s is normal for a normal driver

ya bro a C5 is sick, a c6 or a z06 would be better but what the hell a vette is a vette. Its still fast and fun, My favorite part was the gas mileage.

If you look around you should be able to get a good one and at a good price.

Great car without a doubt. They're very reliable, get 25-30mpg on the freeway depending on driving style. I daily drove mine for years even with the blower. Long trips were very comfortable, etc. I'd look for a low mileage 2001+.

347CID had a c5 z06 for awhile.. IIRC, he got about 28mpg on a road trip... they are NICE! I say get it man! [patriot]

I'm actually trying to talk a buddy into getting a c5 z06. They have excellent power, a helluva lot lighter than a mustang, and get stellar gas mileage.

If Ls1 camaros and Firebirds run low 13's stock, what makes you think that a car that is ligtr and has more power would only run low 13's as well. a decent driver should be able to get a 12.6-12.7 out of one with ease. I have seen it many times. Some people have run faster than that

The fastest one went with a pro driver was 11.9. You are wrong sir. [patriot]

correct, average drivers should get mid 12s out of a stock C5 Z06 and high 12s/low 13s out of a C5 vette. The best out of a stock Z06 i've been on drag radials and stock otherwise was a flat 12. My SS with only a air lid and a cut out trapped 107mph, which should be 12.7-12.8 times if I could've gotten the 60 foot down.

mine had a steering colum recall.basically it would lock up at anytime and your not able to release it till the computer decides too(i was stuck for hours at one time),never happed during driving but supposedly it might.anyways took it in few times and supposedly its fixed but steering colom lock keeps on appearing still.
not too happy with creeks and cracking sound while driving, car always sat out not in the garage and for some reason it would always fog up inside dont know if water or moisture coming in.never got into an accident.good luck all in all great car for commute 2 seater, power, mpg is great and looks.

im not talking about some hyped up magazine times....go to a track with a stock zo6 w stock tires no add ons and see what they get....my c5 when in stock form was prolly 13.4s? not spinning my camaro with exhaust and a shift kit was faster actually

We are talking about c5 zo6's not regular c5's. Whoever can only run low 13's in a c5 zo6 either can't drive very well or bought a lemon! I would think a regular c5 should run faster than an 13.4 unless it is an auto or a older one like 97 or something. Maybe your friend needs more practice shifting?

Pro drivers usually shave off .3-.4 off of what regs can do.

Perhaps you aren't a good driver. [Wink]

I currently have an '02 z06 that I picked up 4months ago. I just hit 30,000miles. These cars are amazing! I came from an '89 hatch that I thought was quick. Hahah, that was a joke!

Some pros I enjoy over the foxbody are: everybody and their mom doesn't try to race you, nobody really revs at you, cops look right pass me (even with no front plate, and 5% tint all around). Plus many others.

Everytime I look at my car I think about how sexy it is. Everytime I drive it, it makes me smile. I love these cars!

As far as gas mileage, I average between 17-20mpg. Fill up once a week (just paid $72 to fill up from 1/8 tank). Its possible to get more and less.

Cons: premium gas cost, when the sun hits the heads-up display and reflects everything on the windshield, insurance cost, and as mentioned the interior seems and looks kinda boring (many mods available though). And the z06 is only available as a hardtop.

I highly recommend them though. At least go drive one. Many people who have went from c5s to c6s, went back to a c5. They say it feels more like raw power than the c6 which feels like a sedan.

I bought my z for $27k with 25k miles. Have taken it on many twisties and I love it!

By the way, a stock z06 with an average driver who knows how to shift should run 12.5s all day.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask questions. And check out corvetteforum.com for more info and research. Good luck with the search!

Anyone who cant average a 12.5 in a c5 zo6 needs some drivin lessons. My best was a 12.0@116 and my average was 12.2/12.3. Most people just simply do not know how to drive.

I had all the same problems, but i have to say it was 1 of the funnest cars to drive.

I've owned a 2000 Corvette with 30K miles on it for about 2 years now. I am surprised on how many small stupid things that have gone wrong:
1) Column lock bypass (locked up when I was at AM/PM)
2) Head lights (pop up gears on both sides stripped out at 28K miles)
3) Remote & tire pressure sensor RF transmitter needed reset. Tires and remote to lock/unlock went off line.

I am a hands on owner so I fixed them all for about $50 bucks but I am surprised that GM's flagship car is so glitchy.

The HUD is cool. The car is super smooth on power and brakes, its much more stable than my 5.0.

For what they are going for now my opinion = great sports car for cheap.

Aaron
