I turn on the radio and I hear the same thing just by different people. I'm tired of rappers telling me how much money they have and talking about things I can't afford. I'm tired of people telling me to go dumb and shake my dreads. I tired of folks telling me to throw them bows or asking if I ever seen a chevy with butterfly doors. I want to hear about things that matter. I want to hear about things I can relate to. Like, $4.00 a gallon gas and how the government cares so much about iraq, but doesn't set the same standards for 3rd world country's ruled by dictators in Asia and Africa. Like, how they can spend billions on a war, but little kids go with no food to eat hear in the US. Like, how police can murder innocent people and get away with it, but can't seem to put the right people in jail. I want to hear music like NWA's "Fuck The Police", Wyclef's "If I Was President" and Tupac's "Keep Ya Head Up"

Our schools are failing our inner city youth, minorites still suffer from racial injustice, and people are killng each other everyday. I know it's not the rappers fault, but change can start there.

I was thinking the same thing. I coach youth basketball, I mentor kids and more importantly I raise my children the best and right way I know how. But for the kids that aren't as fortunate, that is where the folks that are blessed should step in.

But yea Rap in general is in a sad state. Very few rappers have substance. Thats why all I listen to now is for the most part Pac, DMX, Jada Kiss, and Jay Z as far as rap.

There are a few places in Oakland I would advise OTB's not to go. But like you said that is everywhere. And who said white folks cant go in Oakland? Thats [BS flag]

I used to go to Oakland all the time. Some of the best weed I smoked came from them street of OT. I have friends that live there too though lol. I think Oakland has the potential to be a better place. Maybe in a couple more decades.

Kingroy what an interesting topic you opened up here. Where to begin with it would just take to much time. I totally agree with what your saying here and have been feeling this way for years. I used to love rap in the late 80's and mid 90's but then I think it just fell apart too. There's money, girls, bling, 24's or bigger or otherwise I don't roll and money again, in all the videos and music. Another thing disturbing to me is BET (black entertainment television). If there were a WET (white entertainment television) channel there would be law suits galore. F this ! And remember everyone...god bless the U.S.A. ......LOL

Rappers don't care about that stuff. They only care about making money.
I don't listen to rap stations anymore, they don't play the good stuff. Old School is where its at.

LOl...I think we should start a new topic here! Yep ,TNN is the redneck channel however you still couldn't call it WET because Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would sue to the nth degree but you can call it BET. Simple isn't it!

a white dude playing the race card...now thats funny (actually I assumed you were of Caucasian descent). Well it is simple actually. Usually when things are labeled "white" it is used to be followed by "only". Kinda hard to shake 400 years of that stigma.

but this isnt a race issue. It's a music issue. Let's keep it there [patriot]

early Jay-Z and Nas. Bay area hyphy rap has fallen off from when it first came out.

I tried to tell people I had a new mix CD out a few months back that featured all the artists u just mentioned, plus Mos Def, & a bunch of other artists in which i produced every track on the CD...No one replied except maybe a few heads, but only one person on this board actually inquired about it....Thanks BTW Chis
[patriot]

Mainstream hip hop, & music in general is in a sad state right now. Thats why I either listen to old school, or good underground artists like Little Brother, mos Def, Hi Tek, Talib Kweli, Zion I, Grouch, Pete Rock, De La Soul, KRS 1...ETC.

Even R&B music sucks nowadays because nobody sings soulfully like they use too. Hell, u dont even need to be talented anymore because they have computer effects to make it sound like u can sing (I.E. T-Pain)...

I have been producing good music for years. I have done quite a few tracks that living legends fans will be familiar with such as "no more greener grass" by G&E, "Classic", from the living legends album, & most recently "yardwork" & "watch watch" from grouch's brand new album....I also did "True Magic" by Mos Def, "can u shout" & "cuthroat soup" by Mac Dre, & countless other tracks for bay area & local artists....Hope I can get a few peeps on here interested in my music....

Peep the MYSPACE if u want to hear a few of my tracks....

sorry sir but can't do that. [patriot] I also don't want to hear about people losing their woman, dog and car. lol. Although, I did go line dancing in N.C. White people do have rythymn, and the harlem shuffle has nothing on line dancing.

Hey peoples, thanks for all the input. Lots of new ideas and new artist were thrown out there. Hopefully, I can hear something different and new. I guess my biggest fear is being the old guy stuck in an era. Like that old guy that told us in the 80's and 90's that music isn't like what it used to be. Something to think about.

in the original post he says that they talk about stuff you cant buy or afford. that alone is enough to make me want to get up and get something if that is your thing.but i listen to all the rap that is out right now and old school on my xm radio. i can relate to both being that i like candy paint, butterfly doors and bling of course.

I have actually noticed that this watered down portrayal of music is seeping into R&B too. Just music in general is losing its substance. I was thinking about this the other day, and I think it has to do a lot with my/our age. Like me I was raised in the era where music was for the most part violent and street. Thus I dig Trick Daddy, Eightball MJG, UGK, Pac, Jada, DMX.... But the youngsters these days all they are knowing is Rick Ross, Plies and the new booties. All they seem to know is Patron, cars and bitches. A few rappers are on the edge to me like lil Wayne and Ludacris... (and those types). I bet just about everyone in this thread is 30+, generation X babies. The kids these days (gen Y) are a different breed. I think we are witnessing a disconnect in the music of our generation to the next.

hey im only 24! I listen to all music that is good, wether it be country, rap, rock as long as it has a good beat and some meaning behind it ill listen. You are right though music today doesnt compair to early rap music talkin about the street life. and just FYI new country isnt about peoples dogs dieing and their woman leaving them anymore, thats old stuff, new country is much more upbeat and whatnot. I cant listen to old country haha

I feel you on the cars, drugs, bitches game that every new rapper has been on. What we have been seeing is the commercialization of the rap industry.

There is good music out there its just getting harder to find with all that get-money-drink-liquor tunes out there.

Just downloaded the new Busta Rhymes feat. Linkin Park "We made it" single and video. It's good except the chorus is weak in my opinion. My fav cd is still Collision Course.

I like the mixing of the two types of music.
