Powers out. We have easily a foot of snow. I hiked to the transformer cause we saw it blow up and now there's a big truck over there so I went to go see what was going on. Its not far but it felt like I walked a mile. The snow was going over the top of my boots up to my shins it was cool.

Its snowing [Smile] We got about a foot right now from past storms and its snowing hard right now so we should get a lot more [Smile]

Several inches of new snow could accumulate today, with snowfall expected to continue throughout the weekend.

But the sun could peep out by Monday, according to a forecast for western Nevada County from the National Weather Service.

If you haven't already, be sure to shake the snow off your bushes to keep them from breaking under the weight, said Amanda McElhannon, co-owner of Prospector's Nursery in Nevada City.

"Just take a broom out there and gently knock it off," she advised.

Or, forget the garden and head for the slopes. Lake Tahoe-area resorts are boasting a base of around 10 feet, 10 to 15 inches of new powder and more snow expected today. But some areas also are reporting high winds that are affecting the lifts, so check the reports at seven area ski destinations online at www.skilake tahoe.com.

In western Nevada County, snow showers are expected to pick up after 10 a.m. today and drop 1 to 3 inches, with the temperature remaining at about freezing all day, the weather service predicted. Light winds from the south to southeast during the day will get stronger tonight.

Rain is expected tonight, changing to snow showers after 10 p.m. that could drop another 3 to 7 inches of snow, according to the forecast.

Snow is expected to continue Sunday, with decreasing winds.

The sun should come out Monday, with highs predicted near 46 degrees. The sun will continue to break through some clouds through Friday, the service forecast.

Groundhog barometer: more wintry weather ahead

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — Brace yourself for more wintry weather.
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Saturday, leading the groundhog to forecast six more weeks of winter.

The rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, top-hat- and tuxedo-wearing businessmen who carry out the tradition.

Each Feb. 2, thousands of people descend on Punxsutawney, a town of about 6,100 people some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, to celebrate what had essentially been a German superstition.

The tradition is that if a hibernating animal sees a shadow on Feb. 2 — the Christian holiday of Candlemas — winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will come early.

That was the forecast from Gen. Beauregard Lee, Punxsutawney Phil’s counterpart in Lilburn, Ga. Beau did not see his shadow Saturday morning at the Yellow River Game Ranch.

It was the third year in a row the two groundhogs’ predictions differed

Amtrak "Zephyr" passenger train stuck in Sierra

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — More than 150 people remained on board a train stuck in the Northern California mountains Saturday after a snow plow fell through the tracks and blocked its path, officials said.

Two Amtrak trains and about 400 had passengers were initially stranded after the accident Friday. One train was pulled to Reno, Nev., and its 165 passengers were put up in a hotel, Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said.

The other train, which was headed from Emeryville to Chicago, was still in the mountains. About 60 passengers were taken by bus back to the San Francisco Bay area overnight, while 155 stayed on the train to wait for the line to reopen, Romero said.

The train had heating and lights and passengers were given food, Romero said. No injuries were reported.

A Union Pacific spokeswoman, Zoe Richmond, confirmed that the company's equipment was blocking the tracks but had no other information.
