Its been about 2 months since my car was stolen and I finally got an offer. It took me about a month to get copies of all my receipts, which I could understand slows the process, but it shouldn't take another month for the offer I got.
They made me an offer of $1818, and after tax and deductible, $1750. Hahah
I have (had) and 89 hatch power everything, v8, 5-speed, with this list of mods:
BBK shortie headers
BBK o/r h-pipe
Flowmaster 40 series
FRPP 9mm wires
MAC C/A/I
BBK 70mm polished tb and egr spacer
Pro50 short throw
Proform Electric Fan
Steeda Firewall Clutch Adjustment
Steeda sport springs
140amp sn-95 alternator
BBK underdrive pullies
FRPP 24lb injectors
C&L 73mm MAF
BBK fuel pressure reg.
BBK subframes
New waterpump and timing chain
Alarm
5% tint all around
New weatherstrip all around
Panasonic cd/mp3 player
Ipod and ipod adapter
Polk audio highs
2 rockford 10s
Q-logic stage 2 box
Pioneer 800w amp
17" black 4lug 96 cobras
$5000 Kandy paint
I think that's everything...I'm not sure, I started getting lost. I showed them $8k+ in receipts. And I still don't have all receipts cuz I bought used stuff as well.
They also said they would give me an additional $1000 for all the extras. A total of $2750. Hahahah! I laughed at them and told them that's not gonna work.
I use 21st century too. Just incase anybody is wondering.

Sure, and do you also expect them to cover the $1.5m Picasso you had in the trunk?
Good insurance companies will cover things like aftermarket stereos, wheels, etc...all to a point. After that, it's up to you to claim a value on your car so they may insure it correctly

i rear ended someone a while back, and "I" got rembursed for it....LOL got a check for $2200 to fix my hood and lights, which only cost like 5 bills for stock, but decided to get a new cobra r hood, headlights/foglight, hids, and the whole front ended painted. and that was with me being at fault. haha. if i get my car stolen they will cover EVERYTHING. shit now that i think about it no wonder i pay $300 a month.

I knew I forgot something on that list...how could I forget about that painting? Maybe they seen it through my tint and that's why they stole my car! I knew my car wasn't worth a shit, all they wanted was the painting...I'm such a dumbass for leaving it in there!

thats jacked. they're probably offereing u that cuz you're policy is based on a car of that value according to kbb. with any modified car, your best bet is to find a company tht is willing to take on the appraised value rather than kbb, which in our case is useless.
so if you value ur car at 8k, your policy should be reflected on a car worth that much..you will have a tough time trying to get your money. good luck.

Yeah, they basically found 3 "comparable" vehicles, all about 500miles away and one from a recycler then average the price and make an offer. I'm in the process of negotiating an offer now. I had to find what I consider comparable vehicles for them to look at. They only wanted 2, but I got a full list of about 10.
And 21st does suck! I'm definately gonna be switching when I get another car. If they're gonna value my car at $1800 I might as well have no insurance. I pay that a year in insurance.

You should have insured your car at a value of 8k, prior to this. You didn't do this because you'd have to pay more, BUT, this wouldn't be a problem.
You were paying insurance on a stock 89 Mustang 5 liter, why would they give you more?

I faught tooth and nail with AAA when I totalled our Mountaineer. They ended up giving me $13,200 for it and not even a month earlier I couldn't sell it anywhere for even $9,000. I had to keep on their ass everyday though because they were draggin their feet for over a month. But it was worth it in the end.

A friend of mine bought Miles old Capri and put 11,000$ into it. we did it all gt-40 crate engine, world class t-5, alum driveshaft, springs, gears, control arms, everything even had the nicest fiberglass hood I've ever seen. It got stolen in front of his house in Newark about 2 years ago, shit it even had an alarm, ha argued and argued with insurance and had all the reciepts. In the end he got 3800$

Keep after them. Take all of your photos and receipts for the car and go pay for a custom appraisal. When my '87 LX got totaled in '99, I had to fight Geico tooth and nail. They initially offered me $2500 for mine after they said they'd take care of me. Mine had a freshly built forged 306, full bolt ons, World Class T5, gears, suspension, rims, etc. It was basically a new car mechanically. The car itself was 12 years old and had 184K miles on it. Long story short, I battled with them for 2-3 months. It went something like this...
THEM: $2500
ME: NO.
THEM: $3500
ME: NOT EVEN CLOSE.
THEM: $4500
ME: DO I NEED TO REMIND YOU THAT YOU HAVE A LEGAL DUTY TO DEAL WITH ME FAIRLY AND JUSTLY, AS YOUR INSURED?
THEM: $6000 AND NOT A PENNEY MORE.
ME: HERE'S MY INDEPENDENT APPRAISAL SHOWING THE VALUE AT NEARLY $11K. I THINK THE ARBITRATOR WILL SEE THINGS MY WAY.
THEM: OK. OK. HERE'S A CHECK FOR $9K. PLEASE GO AWAY AND LEAVE US ALONE.
ME: YOU GIVE ME A CHECK FOR $9K NET AND I KEEP THE CAR.
THEM: DEAL.
I ended up parting out the car for another $6500. I got $15,500 out of a car I might have been able to sell for half that. My point is this: stick with it, know your rights, and next time insure it for agreed value. I learned that it's just not worth the hassle, no matter the end result.
OK, it might have been worth the hassle in my case.

point is...if your car is modified such that it's value far exceeds kbb, get the car appraised and base your policy on this value. w/ my collector car insurance, i paid based on a 10k valued 92 fox and a 15k valued 94cobra. if anything happens, you'll have to battle less with the insurance company.
that said, a friend of mine just totalled his 2000 lexus gs300. he paid suggestion retail price for it from a dealership. luckily he was able to negotiate with the insurance(called wawanesa) with very little pushback to pay near suggested retail so it also depends on which company you're dealing with.
you're kinda SOL when you pay insurance on a stock vehicle and expect to get full value for all the add-ons w/out paying an adjusted insurance.

sounds about right since a 99gt is worth about $6k and a 95gt is $3.5k.
I remember seeing 87-98 5.0L's average for $3.5k back in 2000. No way they are worth that much now

wow, where have you been shopping?
I can't remember the last time I saw a decent looking foxbody 5.0 for less than $3500
sure you'll see some for sale for less, but they're not worth what the lowest quality examples on craigslist ad's without pictures are listed at.

I'm definately gonna keep pushing this and tryin to get the most I can. I already knew I was gonna take a lost, but like this? I never expected that kind of offer. I never knew that I could have my car insured for more than bluebook, but it makes since now. I did learn from this situation though! But I am gonna keep on them and push this issue.
Thanks to the people tryin to help me out and for the support. Everybody else, just keep doin your thing...I don't mind the hate. It keeps me motivated to push this issue.

read your contract in detail but you could try a lawyer and use the whole contract thing...the company states if you pay this amount to us we will insure your liablity for this amount and property damage for this amount. If your not asking for the above stated amount on property damage you might be able to get it out of them. I know a guy in hayward thats taken on a lot of insurance companies he could possibly give you advice. OR do a search online about the company see what you can find. I did this with farmers and found tons of claims, complaints, lawsuits, etc you could get advice and maybe some ideas ...good luck

Understand that insurance companies only make money if they don't pay off claims or underpay their customers.
You paid insurance for a stock 5.0 so they are giving you its worth. Keep nagging them with your receipts and pictures of all your mods, appraisals, etc. No one will fight for your money except you!
Insurance companies make BILLIONS. It's not like they won't survive if they didn't give you a couple thousand.

I got an updated offer after sending in 9 comparible vehicles. My new offer after additional equipment, I will be netting $3,800. I going to continue to try and get more money still. I found an appraisal company that will appraise the vehicle based on pictures and receipts. So I'm just waiting to get that done, and will subit all of the information to the insurance company. I had mentioned the idea to the insurance company, and they said if I could get an appraisal, they would definately take a look.
I'll keep updating as more comes up.

do insurance companies also cover stuff that was in your car as well, like digital camera, ipod, video camera, etc... and to what extent or proof do you usually need that these items were in the vehicle... oh and does it cover stereos and cds as well??

It does not cover anything that is NOT physically attached to the vehicle. So phone, camera, etc, that has to be claimed under home owners or renters insurance.

I was able to claim my ipod, but that is because I had it mounted in the vehicle as part of my stereo system. I had receipts to show proof that I had the correct cable (made by panasonic) that matched my deck and was for ipods only.

I think State farm gave me like 4500 for my 91 gt when it was stolen. that was with the 200 they gave me for inside property, and I bought it back.... stripped. I didnt have to haggle them at all. it was a smooth transiction. I had a friend that had a car reareneded, and I think Gieco wanted to fix it all with aftermarket parts and gave a ton of BS over the whole deal. I like State Farm and always recomend them.

Well, a little over 3 months since the car was stolen, and finally got another offer about a month later. I think I'm going to take it this time.
After having both parties do an appraisal on the vehicle, they came up with an offer of $4,990 plus another $1,000 for additional equipment. So I will be netting a little short of $6,000.
I could push it a little more and have one more appraisal company, but it will cost $1,000 divided by both parties and their appraisal will be final offer. I don't really want to pay another $500 and maybe not get any more money out of it.
It's been a long 3 months, but it paid off I guess. Time to do some car and insurance shopping.

Sometimes it also depends on what endorsements you have on your policy. Good job on the fight though.
