I know of two Tacos that got their cats cut off at the Washington Hospital parking lot in Fremont. I couldn't believe it at first but didn't know the cats had platinum in them.

only the 96 and up cats have the platinum that's why they cost so much more, unfortunatley stealing these is nothing new.

The factory Toyota cats have precious metals(platinum/iridium) inside...I guess they're worth a lot...It's about $1500. for a new cat for some cars...I work at a Toyota dealership...We like to call them "cat bandits"

Maybe you could print this out and keep it in your car. If you get pulled over and the cops find out you don't have cats just show him the paper and tell him they were removed for safe keeping.

I work for Midas and we see an average of 2 per week of mostly Toyota trucks and SUVs getting their cats stolen. None of em happy about the price of the cats and most of the times, they can't get universal ones, they have to buy the whole assembly.
One guy got soo pissed off he came back the next day after his cat was stolen to have us put a custom "cage" for his cats, funny, you have to do whatever it take to protect your sh!t.

Well that's one thing i wont have to worry about. no cats on my truck and it's 100% legal

Tacoma's actually do have universal cat available now through the aftermarket. They are such a target along with hondas because most of them you dont need a saw to get them off just two 9/16" wrenches. Aftermarket cats are not worth much to scrap buyers $5 $10 is average. They do not have the precios metals in them so dont come steal mine off the shelf lol.

I think they meant a different way to have it mounted as in(shielding it ,etc....)to deter theives from cutting them off.

This has been going on in Sac for a couple years. Even bigger right now is copper wire theft. Thousand of dollars in damge for a few dollar's when sold to a re cycler.

I had mine stolen off my 1993 pickup-the cat is cheap-the pipes and o2 sensors are expensive to replace. They sawsalled mine off-taking the sensors also. They are a special 2 bolt o2 sensor not your traditional bung welded onto the pipe. all said and done $1000 to fix it-
Posted by ls1_doc (Member # 6083) on

Yep Toyota o2 sensors are redicously priced.
