Got damn those patrol cars are slow... but iono about that one. even if it was a high speed chase i dont think poppin shots point blank at the suspect is necessary unless they opened fire first. ima show this video in my class tomorrow and ask my professor about it

most times id agree, expect there was an officer on the hood to attempt to stop them, they still started to drive off, that puts his life in danger, i would let of 2 rounds at least... just my .02

thats what i came up with too. admittedly he got in a bad situation by being on the hood, but once a cop is on your hood pointing a gun at you point blank, you really should stop! he didn't and the cop had to get himself out of danger.

totally justified in this incident. Assuming they were all in Crown Vic's yes they get beat on and worn out. You can't always just stay with somebody you still have to drive with due regard for public safety, clearing intersections, speed/conditions, etc.

Usually when a chase is that dangerous they will end it. But that late at night on open roads they could have at least attempted spike strips or a pit maneuver. Lethal force should be a last resort in my opinion. Plus him jumpin on the hood was a bad idea when they could have easily shot out the tires. He won't probably get in any trouble because he can say he was in fear of severe bodily harm or death but jumping on the hood of a fleeing car 2 stop it was wreckless IMO. But that person was killed based on the officers actions. I've seen and heard of worse chases ending without a loss of life. But like I said its my opinion, ima try to show both my professors to see what they say

looks like the cops had a couple of opportunities to ram him and pin the car, but chose otherwise. I think he used excessive force. Maybe 1 or 2 shots but dude was dumpin on him. why/how a cop would end up on the hood is strange as well. Is that a normal maneuver? Not sure where I stand on this one, unfortunate a life was lost. But was it necessary?

holy shit that looks like something straight out of grand theft auto [Eek!]

haha that was some good shit. why do people always run in cars that can never get away? crown vics only go 128 mph in cop trim.
and after he rammed/ got rammed the first time he should of stoped. he used his car as a deadly weapon, and the cop used his gun.

He might be able to say assault with a deadly weapon on the suspects part but I don't remember seein him tryna hit the cop. I saw the cop willingly jump on the hood and do some real bruce willis stunt. But I gota see the vid again. Damn I can't wait till class........

That cop is nuts for jumping on the hood like that [Eek!]

Ya, I see it being over done. The cop imo went beyond what was called for by getting on the hood. Like others said, why not shoot the tires out, box the car in, instead of ramming it that last time. Heat of the moment people get too caught up in their actions. Especially after 4 minutes.

It's very easy to avoid that. Don't make the cops chase you for 4 minutes.

"A third officer was struck by the car as it lunged forward.

He was slammed onto the car's roof and then fired additional shots into the car to get it to stop"
Doesnt appear that he jumped on the hood...

i showed one of my criminal justice teachers that works for chp and he said it kinda falls into what kinda policy that department has on the use of force and conduct. And where the debate comes in is whether the cop or should or should not have been on the hood of the car. plus i realize its real eazy to jugde someones actions when your not in the middle of it. & im not sure if the first time shots were fired the suspect fired first. if he did then at that point the dudes in the monte carlo were screwed. but if they didnt then i still think what the cop did was excessive force. but i guess my teacher wants to go into detali about it in a later class session. extra credit for me [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

in the article it says the suspect wasn't armed.
adn it looks like they tried to box him in a couple of times but it didn't work.
the article also says that the cop was thrown on the hood when the car tried to run him over. at that point i think the officer was just thinking about his survival and stopped the car the only way he could.

I would give the officer a medal of honor and buy him a steak dinner.

the officer had a chance to ram the vehicle 2 times before the shootout began. i think it was an error in judgement on the cops behalf. if he had rammed the vehicle the second time, there would not have been the extreme wreckless behavior of the getaway car. the cop's error caused for a fatality (luckily it was only the suspect). i think excessive force was used...and this comes from a guy that has a family in law enforcement
