A Ford Mustang crashed into a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon near Mount Pleasant High, killing one occupant of the Mustang and leaving two others in critical condition.
"It appears as though speed was a factor," said Sgt. Nick Muyo of the San Jose Police Department.
A male juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:51 p.m. accident on South White Road at Murtha Drive, Muyo said. The victim was not a student at Mount Pleasant, the school was told.
Two others in the vehicle, described by police as 18 to 22 years old, were in critical condition. A fourth occupant, also 18 to 22 years old, was treated at a hospital and released, police said.
Witnesses said the driver of the Mustang crossed into opposing traffic, striking a Ford pickup. The driver of the truck had minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, police said.
The accident tied up traffic on busy South White Road for at least four hours.


he Santa Clara County Coroner's Office has released the name of the teen killed in a car accident Wednesday afternoon in East San Jose.
Jose Portela, 15, a student at Overfelt High, died at 2:51 p.m. when the Ford Mustang he was traveling in crashed into a pickup truck on South White Road at Murtha Drive. Two others in the vehicle, described by police as being between the ages of 18 to 22, were in critical condition.
Ana Lomos, an administrator with the East Side Union High School District, said grief counselors were on the Overfelt campus this morning.
Witnesses said the driver of the Mustang crossed into opposing traffic, striking a Ford pickup. The driver of the truck had minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, police said.
"It appears as though speed was a factor," police spokesman Nick Muyo said Wednesday.

WOW, we are getting FAR too many reminders lately of what speed/wreckless driving can do.

Please save it for the track people. It's not just your lives that can be affected. Remember this stuff the next time someone pulls next to you and revs. Be the adult and just shake your head........

they didnt say why he whent to the apposing lane? just for the hell of it or something came infront of him and swerved out of the way...

RIP it sucks especially for the family members of the 15 year old..

he was racing another guy on a busy street in traffic first mistake he swerved to not hit some kid on a bike the car spun around into on coming traffic he was doing i heard 60 in a 35mph zone and the pickup hit the mustang from behind i know the driver of the car hes stupid he just couldn't handle the car was stock they left that poor kid in the back seat dead for some hours the person car out flew and landed in the street the door wason the sidewalk the hatch was 30ft in front of the cars and the rear bumper was in the back seat he died in the backseat what i belive
