Ran @ Buttonwillow for the 1st. time in early April. What a KICK!!
I have a 90 LX 5.0 that still has stock heads & cam, but I've added 1.7:1 rockers, an intake and headers, 70mm TB, 76mm MAS and 24# injectors plus a K&N. It has a 5 spd. 7 3.73 gears.
It has full length subframe connectors, strut tower brace, cambre/caster platesthe chassis HD rear control arms, panhard bar & adjustable rear sway bar. the springs lower the car about 1-1/2" and are 650#/" in front and 200#/" in the rear. Shocks are KYB adjustables. Brakes are 13" Cobra's in front and MK VII's in the rear.
The tires are 245/45/17 Flakens with a treadwear index of 360.
I got out run by most of the cars and after talking to several guys out there I came away with this:
Aside from my lack of skills, I need -
1. Sticky tires. Nitto NT01's or maybe TOYO RA1's.
2. Stiffer springs. I am looking seriously at going to coil overs and a torque arm. Maximum Motor Sports looks like a good product.
3. Don't have an opinion on shocks, but assume I will have to change to go to Coil overs.
4. Need a better seat and restraints. Looking at Corbeau because they have a road race style that will fit my big butt.
5. Will add a 6 piont bar.

Comments please! i am new to alot of this and do not have $$$ to waste.

yes those tire u have now are way to hard. Bfg is coming out with a new road racing tire that is street legal. also the torque arm setup is sweet my car hooks really well out back. I was planning on going out there as soon as i get my car corner weighed. and differant tire wheel setup. The guys at maximum motorsport are really cool to talk to about setting up your suspenion.

If you're just getting started I'd stay away from R compound tires. Those tires are not as forgiving as street tires, meaning that they don't let you know when they're about to lose adhesion like a street tire will. They can easily put a beginner into the wall. Plus they hide a lot of your mistakes, also not good for a beginner. I like my Goodyear Eagle GS-D3, and I'll probably get one more set before I switch to R comp tires. Go for the coil overs if you're really going to get into road racing, they are lighter and will allow you to run a higher wheel rate. Get the MM bilstein kit or Griggs if you like quality parts. I have the MM bilstein kit, it works great on my car. Safety is always a good thing. As I get quicker and quicker at the track I'm really wishing I had spent some money on a cage and a good 6 point harness.

If you guys would like somone to go auto x-sing / road racing Ie: thunderhill infineon let me know. I would love to do a HDPE or similar event. My 65 mustang should be finished by next weekend with full Maier racing suspension. Personally I am looking for some guidance due to teh fact I have never participated in an event yet and am a little timid.

Thanks eric

SF Coupe, you are right about the sticky tires. it is quite a temptation to go out and get some really good tires, but i will probably practice on these for a while.

GOT 5.0, go to a HPDE event or one sponsered by someone like Speed Ventures. i went to their event @ buttonwillow and it was great. they help the timid as well as the bold and too bold. good people.
