TTT,
I'm about to call them and establish a claim for water damage(bathroom) and need some advice.
Has anyone used their home insurance to help them cut the costs of remodeling a bathroom?

They WILL raise your rates. If they by chance they can find a way not to cover they will. Then they will underwrite it and still raise your rates.

If you make too many claims on your homeowners insurance you can be dropped. Also other carriers will not take you if you have had a claim within the past 5 years.

I'm dropping CSAA once I pass that threshold.

I absolutely agree. Do not claim for the sake of trying to save a few bucks now. The insurance company will always earn it back by increased premiums. I've been a homeowner for 12 years with a clean record. I made one simple claim 5 years ago and it still comes back to haunt me. Insurance companies run a "clue" report on your address and any claims stay visible from 3 years to 5 years, and that includes new carriers. My premium went from $800 to $1000 the year after the claim, the next year they wanted $1500! I had to shop 3 different insurances and was lucky to get back to $900. Sorry if this was long, but my take is that unless your damages are well into the tens of thousands, I would just suck it up and fix it outside of insurance.
