115lb dumbbells, 6 times 1 with help. Goal is to get to 135lb dumbbells in the next 6 weeks. My elbow is hurt/sore from a tricep workout 2 weeks ago thats why it has tape on it. The Tape helped even though you wouldn't think it would. The title of this is from a saying off the bodybuilding.com site. [Razz]

On another note, you said you can bench 350 lbs but you can only do 115 dumbells? I don't quite understand. 115x2 is only 230 lbs so I don't see why your dumbell presses are so low compared to your bench. I bench 170 and also do 80 lb dumbell presses so I don't see why such the difference for you. I would think you should be able to do 150lb dumbells no problem.

dumbbells are way harder than barbell, especially if you haven't done them in a long time. [Frown] You should know that since your benching 170 but only doing the 80s.

when you are using dumbbells you don't get the help form your triceps as much...that;s why you can see guys who bench in the 400's use 140-150 dumbbells because they don't get the use of the use of the triceps as much...you have to use more of your chest in this manner...for someone like him who is benching in the 300's...115 to 125 is about normal for flat dumb bell...

also, having a center weight to lift is much harder than trying to lift a weight that is now centered over your elbow..

That does seem a little skewed, benching 350 and doing 115 dumbbells. But I can dig it if you havent done them in a while plus hurting from another workout.

I actually hate doing dumbbells, shit hurts like hell. Good luck on your goal. I know my goal is to bench 420, but stuck at 350 [Frown]

I'm confused. Don't take this wrong because I'm new to lifting and I'm weak. But when I first started lifting the dude that helps me work out said that he wanted me to do dumbells to help strengthen my triceps and that dumbells work your triceps much more than a straight bar. I asked him why I was 10 lbs less on dumbells and he said that its the balancing that causes it but he said being within 10 lbs is excellent. He said that the straight bar takes out the balancing equation. Sometimes 1 arm is stronger than another so when doing dumbells this will show and you wont' be able to lift it when he gets hard. He said during straight bar you can get away with it because you can shift the weight to the stronger side. He did say that its harder but told me I should be doing roughly 80% of my straight bar weight such as bench and military presses.

Just for referece this guy also benches around what you do (3 plates and some change on the outside) and also works out with 140-150 lb dumbells. And he does dumbell shoulder presses with the 120s in a chair.

Like I said I dunno I'm new to lifting so I just go by what other people tell me.

Barbell is easier for me, what jordan said was right though. Triceps aren't as prominent in dumbbell lifting than barbell. Also with barbells if you know how you can use your upper back and your shoulders for the lift as well.
When i start new people on lifting weights i have them start with machines before i have them go to free weights. Machines will help them see how they are supposed to workout each muscle without the possiblity of injurying themselves.

Jordan hit it on the head. its all in what muscles are recruited to aid in the motion and stabilization. Straight bar the center is between 2 arms and depending on grip width affects which muscles are recruited for the movement. Dumbbells the fulcrum is actually the elbow with the line of movement straight over the wrist. So each arm is now independant where before it was working in concert with the other arm (straight bar). I am no professional and am learning stuff still too, but I dont think I will ever be close to my bench using dumbbells.

Ok but does dumbells work your triceps more? Since the fulcrum is over your elbow it would be like close grip benching, which is for triceps. Again this is what the dude told me and it seems to be true for me because I feel triceps more when doing dumbells compared to straight bar where I have a wider grip. I'm going to try it today its my chest day.

I think you feel triceps more because they are required more for stabilization that with straight bar. And its an independant motion. It also depend on how wide you do your dumbbells.

Sounds like you worry to much about what others think [Wink] If people DONT believe that you did something that you did...then you should take pride in that...it means you have achieved what others think is BS.

For exmaple...my first time ever at the track with my car...first pass down the track....went 9.80, pulled back to half throttle, and rolled back into it at 3/4 track. By end of day, I ran a 9.56 on motor. Do you know how many people asked me what nitrous kit I had on the car? Hahahaha...if people don't believe...then fuck 'em...not literally [Wink]

its not going to happen for a couple of weeks. I strained something in my lower back doing heavy deadlifts [Frown] It hurts to walk around [Frown]

I don't know i've never tried maxing on my arms. They are small muscles so i don't want to pull them.
I usually stick with a lighter weight while doing arms because they get worked out when you do chest and back and shoulders so i don't want to overtrain them.

LOL i wouldn't listen to anyone until you've seen that trail. Theres no way a stock rig made it up that trail without lockers, and a very skilled driver behind the wheel.
That guy didn't post pics or anyhting to prove his stock rig made it up. I didn't believe him and you shouldn't either.

That's decent weight your putting up but that is a little low compared to your flat bench IMO but I also think it depends how fatigue you are from previous exercises you did that day.

I'm 6'1" 215lbs, max bench 365 although I will only do max like that maybe once a month to see exactly where my strength level is and put up 145lb dumbells on my flat. I only lift 15lbs heavier than you on your barbell. Don't get it twisted though, alot of people on here cant lift close to 115lb dumbbells and from 115lb to 120lb dumbbell is a big difference once you get on it. Keep doing your thang and you'll get there.

115lb dumbbells was my last set. i started off with the 90lbers for 10, then 105 for 8, then 115 for 6 and then i went down to 85 and did 8 for a burn out.

i am starting my next 6 week program tonight. its chest night so i'll warm up with 135lbs and then go up to 300 from there

No i go beyond parrell(sp?) that is my 6th rep which was with an assist

Your pyramid set is pretty good. Try to start 5/10lbs heavier than the previous week and you should get up there in weights pretty quick.

If you started with 90lbs, 105lbs to 115lbs last set, do 100, 110 to 120 next time yo do chest. Trust me, you can do it.

Yeah thats what i am going to do but i had to take a week off after doing the 115s i injured my elbow from doing skullcrushers with a 110lb dumbell (it still hurts) and i strained my back doing deadlifts.
I did chest tonight and i did kept it cool, i did 5 sets of flat with 135, 5 sets of incline with 135 and 5 sets of decline with 135. It was good, got a huge pump from it. 1st set of flat bench i really felt my elbow hurting and then the 2nd set the pain was gone.

I alternate between barbell and dumbbell. This week is all barbell work next week is dumbbell work. I plan on doing 85lb, 95, 105lb for dumbbells next week and then move up again and again until i am doing the 130s+
