Anyone else hear of a massive mudslide shutting down Interstate 80 past Truckee? My bro and i were going to go snowboarding today but i read this on my local newspaper website but i can't find it ANYWHERE else.

Interstate 80 from Truckee east to the Nevada stateline will be closed for at least 48 hours due to a massive landslide.

The slide ripped across the interstate at about 3 a.m. Saturday five miles east of Truckee.

It trapped six big rigs and four Caltrans vehicles, according to Shelly Chernicki, a Caltrans spokeswoman. Everyone in the area at the time was rescued and no injuries were reported, but the vehicles are now stuck in the rugged Truckee River Canyon.

The debris slide started on the west side of the interstate and took out 300 to 400 feet of the center barrier. It has blocked both sides of the roadway. There are no detours currently available.

“We’ve had previous slides, but nothing of this magnitude,” Chernicki said. “Emergency repairs won’t start until the hillside stabilizes.”

Highway 89 south was closed at about 8:15 a.m. from West River Street in Truckee south due to a debris slide near Cabin Creek Road. Officials are not giving an estimated time for Highway 89 to reopen.

Highway 89 north is closed from Truckee to Sierraville due to flooding, Chernicki said.

The closure of I-80 has caused a back-up of big rigs on Highway 267 south in the Martis Valley as they attempt to travel eastward.

At 5:35 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service’s forecast was for heavy rainfall to continue through the afternoon. Rain totals so far in region are from 4 to 7 inches. Rainfall totals are predicted to be 6 to 10 inches by the afternoon with “significant” runoff expected to continue later into the day.

Snow levels are forecasted to be 7,500 feet, lowering to 6,500 feet later in the day with accumulations of 8 to 12 inches and up to 24 inches above 8,000 feet.

The date is for today 2006. I can't find my snowboard boots and my bro doesn't want to snowboard without me so i guess we're just going to go offroading or something now.

Northstar was pretty sick. I just came from there this weekend (Sat and Sun). The only other one I've been to is Heavenly. I think Heavenly is better than Northstar. What do you guys think?

Haven't been to Northstar yet but will be there next month.

I've been riding a lot at Sierra (for the parks), Heavenly, and Squaw due to location and snow.

I've heard a lot of good about Northstar so i can't wait til Feb [dance]

Depending on what kinda riding you like i really like Squaw due to the size as well as Heavenly....but i still prefer Sierra overall.

I've been to Mt Rose, Diamond Peak, and SugarBowl as well but don't really care for them too much.

My buddy religiously goes to Alpine Meadows since they tend to get a lot of snow like Squaw.

Haven't been a lot of the smaller resorts like Donner but i have been to Boreal a bunch of times and although it's quite small it nice to have a place open until 9pm like Squaw with a lot of park type stuff to mess around on .........and THE HALF PIPE!

I should be picking up a season pass to Sierra/Northstar this week [Whoo Whooooo!]

for as long as ive been boarding i never been to sierra...and i have lots of friends that have season passes there. i mostly stay up north cause i got the phat hook up on a cabin at incline village. ive been to almost all the resorts up north and like northstar the best. ive been to heavenly and its HUGE...has a nevada and california side...pretty sick... but since i stay up north i still like how northstar is top notch... my next fav place is bear valley...grizzly bowl if you can hang.
