so, i have a trojan virus. how do i get rid of it?
i recently(earlier today) had to replace my latop's hard drive.
and being the genious that i got a trojan virus before i could install my virus protector program (Norton) now.. how do i get rid of it?
I've tried for the couple of hour or so and am about to just give up and just brake this freaking thing in half.
i keep on scaning the drive but norton and adaware tell me they can't erase the file.
WTF? what should i do, i've gone manually looking for the file but can't do anything to it.
Thanks.

Run a virus scan, then reboot and run it (v.scan) in safe mode. What is the virus or file name? Go to symantec.com and see what they say about the threat. They sometimes have free tools to remove virus's (ie the mydoom and blaster). I can probably help you more if you provide more info about the virus.

Matter of fact, before you do that....Download Spybot search and destroy (its free). Run that too. I usually fond stuff adaware cannot find with that one.

Doesnt sound like a virus, almost sounds like that stupid commander-something tracker/spyware. Check in your add/remove programs and make sure there isnt any of those shopping trackers in there. Use spybot, it has a tool that will ask you to reboot then it will auto-run before windows restarts. Whats probably happening is the spyware is hitting the registry before you get a chance to run your tools. Thus hiding from them.

As far as safe mode.., you may have to press f8 during reboot. Not sure how your bios is set up.

I fukkin hate spyware. I used to have a similar problem, but I got most of it. I have adware and spybot, but I know theres more in there because my cpu isn't nearly as fast as it used to be (p4). Just lttle funny things started happening, like when I go to change my firewall settings it ways that option is unavailable, now I can no longer access it. My volume keys on my keyboard no longer work along with any of the easy link buttons. I think it corrupted some of the drivers. Now my cpu seems to take forever when opening a program.

Is there anyplace to just take your cpu to where they can get rid of all the viruses, spyware and what not without damagaing or erasing any your un-corrupted files?

If ya'll lived closer I could hook you up, with a good comp cleaning. But what I normally do is format at least once a year. Use a tool like Norton Ghost to back up your stuff. Then just wipe everything clean. You can restore your computer from a image of the HDD. Oh and make sure you have all your Microsoft updates.

i just had a trojan thing the other day.
they way i deleted it, was do a virus scan and try to delete it, if that doesnt work find the file and right click the folder and it should say send to mcaffe shredder and then restart your comp and it should be gone.

thats how i did it to delete a trojan.

Did you update your norton? Sometimes you just need to update the nroton to get the right stuff to get rid of the trojan. Can you quaratine the trojan?

I love how everyone refers to us as Gurus, or genius when help is needed. Trojans are sometimes the most difficult. They are usually a few that are added at the same time. Another place to check us run then type regedit. -> HKey_Local_Machine/software/microsoft/win dows/currentversion/run check all programs in this directory and make sure they are legit. You can just type in the filename into google and see if its a safe prgram. If its not, right click then delete. But make sure its bad first. After clearing out these alos check the runonce files. This is the command that tells your computer what programs to run once it starts up. After deleling all the bad stuff, run Antivirus and spybot to clear it. Then restart. Letr me know how it goes. After restarting go back to the run and check to make sure they weren't reinstalled

since you got the new hard drive not too long ago, i'm assuming you don't have much data that needs to be backed up. if thats true, when you have some time, why not just give it a nice, clean reformat? and after you install the operating system, install all your essentials (antivirus, drivers, adaware, etc.) offline from a jump drive. if you can find the fixes to the trojans then great, but it sucks to have a recent install get pounded with some crap so soon.

It took me a week to get rid of teh trojan i had. You just need to wait it out sometimes. Norton will send a fix to you or you can go directly to NOrton and look for a solution.

If you are having troubles with a virus then I would not recommend you doing ANYTHING in the registry. I fixed a neighbors computer recently where he went in and tried to do some registry cleaning, wasnt pretty. You can also try checking your event log too. One of those trojans is pretty nasty. You need to get that one cleaned out.

It can get nasty if you delete the wrong things, thats why you have to double check to make some its related to a virus or spyware. I've never had an issus, maybe because of I do it all day long [Big Grin]

The people who make these are very smart! You can chase them all over the place smack it, kick, choke and the virus lives. I assume the term virus stems from the real life virus and you cant kill it with medicine easily. Reformat the computer and quit playing around. Just reformat. Reformatting will get rid of it for sure.

Excuse me..but I'm kinda stupid..haha..how do I reformat on Windows XP?

Posted by n8y8 (Member # 6048) on :

Put the XP cd back in and re-install windows. Or use the format utility. Or you can use a 98 boot disk. Easiest way is to just install from the XP Cd.
