on ch.3 news they said it was a 4.7 on the barometer, it would have been tight if it was a 5.0 [Big Grin]

I felt it here in San Jose, wasn't sure at first though, and the dog did nothing! I didn't hear any barks in the neighborhood either.

It's called "Richter Scale" Einstein.

Earthquakes don't head anywhere they spread out. They look like what water does when you drop a rock in it.
The earthquake could have been 20-50 miles away from where you live but the waves will travel outward depending on the rock composition and how deep down in the earth it is.

If it was truely in Hayward it would ahve been a much much bigger earthquake. Hayward is the place scientist are predicting the next big earthquake for SF. They're thinking something like the 1906 earthquake because teh Hayward fault hasn't moved in 100+ years but all the faults around it have.

Yeah Barometer is for measuring air pressure.

The Richter Scale is only good for California so scientists don't use it anymore because its not accurate for any other part of the world.

Yea, if it was truly a 4.7 on the barometer, it would be a hellacious day for everyone. Most of the time its in the 28.00-31.00 range.

They use the Magnitude scale now.

There are a few different scales, but they are all still based on the Richter scale which is basically a logarithm, not a meter. Here's a couple good links for more info.
