Was wandering around today and found a estate sale and bought this 89 Jaguar XJS v12 for dirt cheap (wont even put the price its that low). But I am now the second owner. The car is 100% original, no rips tears, dents.... I dont know much about these cars, but I know that v12 has to have some potential. Anyone out there specialize or know much about these cars?

Drives great, has a oil leak tho. Got it for 500 bucks. Everything on the car is immaculant. I was thinking about dropping it on CL just to see what offers I get.

Been reading around and it seems as if they do have some issues, but this dude has been keeping this car maintained for years. Always take it to British Motors, he has every receipt and even the original sales stuff. I think I will hold onto this one for a while unless someone offers a trade for a off the hook stang. Plus my wife likes it.

Oh and thanks for the links..... [patriot]

they're notoriously unreliable and parts are ridiculously expensive. good find. unless your a collector of that type of car, id say unload it for a profit.

True, Jags of that age were often troublesome, although some were good. However, it is my experience that well maintained Jags give less trouble.

By the way, now Jags are more reliable than Mercs (Ford impact i believe!)

Yea, I think I am going to keep it. I drives incredible, and I get lots of looks (although some probably think I stole it..lol). Really powerful that v12 is. The dude has every receipt from when he bought it. So I actually can see the history of the car. And the key thing is it is 100% origianl with very few blemishes anywhere. Although changing the valve cover gaskets is going to be a bitch and British motors wants like 600 to do it [Eek!] [BS flag]

If you were offered 8.5K and you turned it down then I have to call you smart for buying it and stupid for not selling it...

Yea this is true. But it was only a "offer". Had the person waved the bread in my face I might have took it. But its too late now. My wife likes the car so convincing her I should sell it will come at a cost now. Like some the profit may have to go to diamond ear-rings or a trip somewhere. [burnout]

But it is a really really nice car and a good drive. Not mad at the buy. Plus I am not hurtin for cash and the way I see it, the value should go up as time rolls on.

Honestly money dont move me. I hardly ever do things based solely on money, I am not ballin but far from broke. And like I said it was just a offer, dude didnt have cash in hand. That actually means alot. Maybe I would have taken it. Maybe not. And the way I see it, 8500 now could be 12 or so in a few years. And most of all I like the car and wifey loves it. "Priceless"

You "hardly ever do things based solely on money", yet you paid $500 for one of the world's most unreliable cars (remember these words when the electrical system leaves your wifey on the side of the road - LUCAS, THE ENGINEERS OF DARKNESS) and supposedly turn down $8500. You must do things based solely on stupidity. You hold out for that 12K, because I am sure you will get it. [Roll Eyes]

Believe me I know what I am getting in to (researched it right after buying it). It is a car that you have to take special care of. And yes it is expensive. Already forking out some dough for the valve cover job. Like I said money dont move me like some. I bought it because I felt it was a good deal and something different. Not because I can snake around the corner and turn a buck. The way I see it, any car is only as reliable as the maintenance the owner puts into it. And the previous owner has every receipt from when he bought it, so I pretty much know the history of the car and feel comfortable picking up where he left off.

My Rover has never given me any problems [Razz] , but it is well maintained. [Whoo Whooooo!] for warranties. And its an excellent off-road vehicle [worship]

I've had way more problems with my stangs than with any other cars I've owned, but I also love them more than other cars I own,....wierd [Eek!] [Big Grin]

On a side note: money makes the world go round

Yup after talking to a few owners and reading up. That v8 swap is common with these cars. Reduces the value, but saves a bunch in your pocketbook. Dont think I will be going that route tho.

It will be interesting to see how much you like it in a few months. I have been around English cars my whole life. It does not matter how often you mantain the car it will still have problems. It was a poor design when it left the factory, and it always will be.

true that, but I have a good cushion for a error margin being I paid so low. But then again everyone said the samething about 5.0's and Fords when I started of buying mustangs in the early 80's. So 2 decades later I am still a fan. And spending money like water on them. [patriot]
