I had a bet with a friend today whether I could bench my body weight. I weigh 167. I put 135 on the bar and it felt a little shakey but it wasn't too bad. Then 155 and it was heavy but I was able to do it cleanly. Then time came for me to try 170. Well it was tough but I managed to do it after almost getting stuck about 1/2 off my chest. He said I would have gotten disqualified in a competition because one side of the bar was higher than the other and I also had my ass off the bench. Anyway, I tried 175 and got buried he had to lift the weight off my chest and onto the rack. [Frown] Oh well. Just wondering how much people here can bench. Its tougher than I thought!

Bench 240
Curl 130

I don't work out for maxing out, I have my own routine with my own goals. However, one of the trainers at my gym wanted to see where I was at.

I maxed out again a week ago
335 on the flat bench
235 on the incline

I have been doing a chest workout that my Italian friend Nucio gave me. What you do is start with a good weight that you can do 10 reps with. When your done with hte 10 reps you sit up and watch the clock for 20 seconds then you do another set but this time you do as many reps as you can to failure. Then you sit up again and wait 20 seconds and do another set again of as many as you can to failure. These 3 sets together equal 1 set. You add more weight and do the process again doing it 3 times or 3 sets. 3rd set you should have more weight than the 2nd.
If you do this you must work through the pain and you will grow and get strong quickly. 8-9 weeks ago my flat bench max was 305 [Eek!]

Oh i forgot i weight 221lbs. I've leaned out a lot but haven't lost weight [Smile]

I stopped doing max sets about a year ago. At the time:

Weight: 158lbs
Max: 280lbs (2 reps)

Now I weigh 173lbs and I have been running/working out like a mad man for Marine Corps OCS. I do sets of 12-10-8 starting with 220lbs; adding 10 per side until I end up at 260lbs. I work out my chest on mondays... Maybe I will go at my max again [Wink] Spotter... Anyone?

what we should be asking for is the bench press to body weight ratio. That is what impresses me.

335/190 = 1.76

I did 325 in High school weighing in around 190-195 depending on the day. Ever since then I have gone down hill. I am about 220, I just rep with 165 3 sets of 10 every once in a while. All I care is that I can up my own weight.

A few years back I was at my prime when I weighed 210 and benched 385 single and 225 for 34 reps, all touching my chest and not halfway down reps like most people do nowadays.
Now I really feel my age and am 10 lbs fatter and the last time I benched I could only muster 3 reps at 335. Joints hurt a lot more often so I am benching less and using lower weights. I'll leave all the heavy lifting to you youngins.
So I am curious, is halfway down not touching the chest considered a full rep? I have seen lots of guys put up weight and go halfway down and i am certain if it touched their chest, it would stay there till someone pulled it off. I do notice it is all the 20 year olds and younger doing it. Are they doing it for ego or are they actually teaching to go halfway down in PE in high school? Perhaps a safety issue for joints?

It kinda varies on a few things, one being the persons height. And another being what is called "time under tension". There are certain exercises where if you extend your self to much you are actually no longer working the targetted muscle group but another. Bench is one of those. And I mention height because a shorter person would have a less wider grip. Which means at some point their triceps are exerting more. Which is not bad but as you can imagine the more another group fires the less the other does. Also some folks like to bounce the bar off their chest letting momentum carry the weight up. By ending the motion before physical resistance (your body) you are actually controlling the weight better (it could be argued, but thats the theory). Also ther e is a range before you are actually moving your joints in a un-natural way by hyper-extending or extending too far. Case point locking the elbows while benching. I see people doing this all the time. That actually puts un-natural strain directly on the elbow joint. Lifting is supposed to mimic life movements. Not contort the body to work a muscle group.

So in a nutshell it depends on what works for you. I have long ass arms so I dont go to my chest all the time. I used to be in sports medicine prior to becoming a programmer. [patriot]

I can bench one metric ton 10x's I dont have a max because you can only put so many weights on the bar then there is no more room, or it will bend.

I should have never made this post. Its pissing me off. So far I am the WEAKEST person here. WTF! And here I thought most of you were skinny high school dorks! I can bench 170 with it touching my chest for 3 seconds then lifting it up after that. I was trying to do a competition style bench so that there would be no issue as to whether I lifted it. I'm sure some of you bench bounce that shit sky high off your chest. Maybe a bounce contest? Anyway, I can do 170 competition style so I can bench my body weight but not much more.

Wow, a topic a like:

Weight: 210 Height: 6'1"
Max Flat bench: 355lbs.
Max Incline bench: 275lbs.

I rarely try to put up my max and it isn't that easy but my regular routine for flat bench chest is:

135lbs 10 reps (warm up)
225lbs 8reps
315lbs 3 sets, 5 reps at a time

I don't bounce off the chest, you can really injure yourself doing that. I touch the chest and then go back up.
Its all about proper form, bouncing off your chest is cheating.

Yeah, it kinda cracks me up when I see people bounce of the chest hella hard as if they think they are hella stronger that way or something and acts all aggressive after doing the set. Also cracks me up when people can't really push the weights they stack in the barbell so they lift the the weights of the rack then brings it down 4 inches from the starting point and 12-15inches away from the chest.

5'5", 175 and i typically max out around 270. i say typically because i really haven't lifted much in the past couple months as i've been rehabbing my left shoulder which was dislocated last december. for me, putting up big numbers for my size is just a byproduct of working out and never really a main goal. i play a lot of sports so i pretty much workout for the sake of becoming better at those sports. ok, that's not rare at all there are lots of 94 6 speeds to be found. At least its obd1. Lemme know what its like. How many miles? Should be around high 400's close to 500 hp on race gas. Stock twins can't do too much damage but they are fun to put around on for a daily. I'm assuming it has exhaust and a down pipe with no cats.

Think about it. With a membership of over 6000 here on CaFords, and ya ask a question as to who can bench press what amount, the people who can actually bench-a-damn are the only ones that are gonna respond. So in actuality, there aren't that many who can do what most people would consider "alotta" weight. I don't see why some peeps on here are callin' [BS flag] .

Was feelin extra good last night.. Hit 345 a good 5 times. After my workout (worked my way up...135 - 225 - 275 -325) I think it was a fluke tho.

I'm sure some of you bench bounce that shit sky high off your chest. Maybe a bounce contest? Anyway, I can do 170 competition style so I can bench my body weight but not much more.

Do you workout at the gym next to "Cummins Speedway"? I woulda thought you'd bench more then 170.
[burnout]

I would out at Cummins Total Fitness. Gym is clean and has a lot of hot chicks. And I'm still having a hard time believing that everyone benches so much. WTF! Maybe I shouldn't talk so much trash I'm still the weakest one here!
I've been lifting 6 years this June. [Eek!]
I've gone from 140lbs in High school to 221lbs now. [dance]

Yeah but not like Sylvester Stallone...hehe

I see guys all the time at the gym that don't have any muscle definition or even look like they work out that much but can lift a pretty good amount of weight.

Actually that is the phrase I use when I tell my wife I am going to the gym...I say "I am going to get my LL on, I'll be back" So yup I am trying to get Cool J status.

All you have to do is diet and cardio and you can lose your fat.

I haven't had any alcohol, pasta or rice since since 3/1 and I can actually see a big change in my body. I've also been doing 20 minutes of cardio and walking a lot at work every day. I still haven't lost any weight but can see fat dissapearing little by little.

weight is just a number, its the body fat percentage you want to worry about.
It doesn't matter how much you weight its how much fat you have on your body that matters. When anerexic girls/guys die they are considered obessed thats because since they didn't eat their body ate away all their muscle mass but left the fat. The body works in weird ways, fat is energy being stored but your body will eat the muscle mass away first if you don't have the right diet to sustain them when your doing cardio.

Just stay away from Steroids, its a lazy mans way of getting big and all that's going to happen is when your off your going to loose Muscle and notice all the wonderful stretch marks.. Work hard and earn what you have!

There are alot of good combo's of over the shelf supliments that will give you the drive at the gym, I know when I am going throuhg my off months I take something along the line of ephedrine or major energy boost that will force me to work out when I dont want to.

2 of the best bench presses I've seen.
One kid in my gym about 22 years old weighing 125. I spotted him for a 265 bench and it was a clean honest lift. He was a regular 3 times a week but not a serious lifter. He wasn't built either, just a little bit tones.

My ex workout partner weighed 115 benched 155.
She was a girl so that was pretty good.

I've never tried steroids ( too scared) but I know lots of guys on them. I tried creatine and noticed a little bit of a gain, then discoved I was using it for 2 months incorrectly. Oh well.

ok I'm on a mission to bench 185. I think it looks cool to have 4 plates on the bar for 225 but I'll start slow. Shit right now I have 1 plate and a dime on each side and its hard. It sucks though because a girl benched more than that right next to me while I was benching. Talk about embarrassing. She even looked over at me and smirked with a little laugh. Bitch! My first goal is to do a plate and a quarter on each side for 185. Then I'll shoot for 225. I'm at 170 right now. What exercises should I do to help my bench? This guy told me to do legs to increase my bench but I don't get it. Why do legs to help the bench? Anyway, just wondering what I can do to improve my sorry bench.

no the key is to NEVER build your legs, but build a massive chest and arms, so you can look like spongebob lol

I didnt cheat. I wasnt in any competition or playing any sports where I would have any type of advantage because of how I chose to work out. Different people have different goals... my goal was to get bigger, put up heavy weight in a short period of time.

If your not working your shoulders and back, your bench will suffer... Dont worry about how much you can bench man just stick to a rutine like 3X8 at the heaviest weight you can do to 8 reps. That is how your going to build your muscle, If you try maxing out every day your only going to hurt yourself... Who really cares how much you can bench anyways, as long as you look yoked it doesnt matter lol

This is how i see it in the bodybuilding and weight lifting world. If your going to compete you should take Roids because everyone does. If your not going to compete you shouldn't take roids cause theres no reason to go past your genetic limitation. So in my eyes you cheated yourself by doing roids.
I'm all Natural and plan on staying that way. i will get to where i want someday theres no rush cause i'm not going to compete for a while.
