OK, i remember I had a disscusion with someone, at some point of my life. They told me that a 351 C/W was the smallest of FORDS' BIG BLOCKS- and my side of the argument was that a 351 block was probably the biggest of the SMALL BLOCKS Ford has to offer. Who is with me, I'm pretty damn sure that a 351 is a SMALL BLOCK, any input from the engine GURU'S would greatlly help.
I just remembered as I was reading recent post.
351= SMALL BLOCK

CLEVELAND and WINDSOR- both are basically built around the same platform. Same stroke, pistons interchange. So no, both are SMALL BLOCK'S, ha ha-
MENLO PONY- Empty your PM's, I have something for you. HE HE

If i remember correctly it has something to do with the head size, number of bolts, dry intake, and different dimensions all around that make the cleveland a big block (staight shitin' on fools)
Posted by menlo pony (Member # 4301) on
:
That's why I haven't gotten any PM recently. Right on.

Yes they were both smallblocks. Read up on them on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_335_engine & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Windsor_engine

the heads on the cleavland jus have humongus intake runners is all but stilla small block if anything if could be a mid blockLOL but with todays technology and the price it takes to build a cleavland def. more advantage runing a windsor!
Posted by GRIGGYJAMESJIMBO (Member # 6319) on
:
Yes sir- If I would ever run a 351, it would of definatelly have to be a WINDSOR. More parts and a lot more potential. Just because the whole array of parts that you can buy off-shelf and just bolt on with no mods. Trust me this is less of a hassle when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, building time.

big block or small block, I want one in my car.
Posted by v-town coupe (Member # 2771) on

it fits nicwer and everything and they jus finally came out with aluminum heads for the cleavland but shit i have seen numerious articles with almost i dentical builds and the windsor loses jus barely but that motor was also 2500 cheaper to build and it fit nice in the car and was easier to work on! and for the extra 2500 bucks i can make up for the loss of power! a big for the windsor!

I love wikipedia, I hate people on certain forums.
Can't go back and erase everything I knew before wikipedia, but I can edit. Thanks.
And fuck this broken search feature, I'm trying to make a point here.

well actualy the 351 windsor is a small block. Ford gave no offical definiton for the 351C that is why there is always a argument I have heard it called both big and small and have even heard it called a Mid(not to be confused with the 351 M) block.

Both the 351W and 351C have a small block bellhousing bolt pattern. Both are considered small blocks. "Mid" refers to the 351/400M (Midland engine plant) series engine. It uses the 429/460 bellhousing bolt pattern, which makes people say that it is a "big block".

Ford could care less what you or I call an out of production for 30 year engine. But, since you need proof, here is page 220 from the 06 Ford Racing catalog - look below. They actually consider the M (modified to them) as a small block also, but it has the big block bell. An engine with a small block bellhousing is a small block, etc... semantics(sp?)
Now it's your turn to prove to me that a Cleveland is a "big block". I'll bet you can't.

428,427,410,406,390,352 were all FE Big Blocks. Also, the 361 and 391 truck motors were FE's too. There might have been a few others like 331 or 332 but they are all the same family. It is a Big Block I don't care what anyone tells you. I've been an FE enthusiast for about 8-9 years now, so I kinda know a bit about them.

I never said the cleveland was a Big block engine you didn't read what I wrote. I have the same catalog but I think they finaly grouped it there because it had no home in the original publications of 30 years ago they didn't classify it as far as I know.

clevelands are expsensive to build.i've done three of them in the past with all my torinos! clevland only in my torino...unless its a 460! but they can spin really high and take advantage of those big ports! i've always wanted to build a stroked cleveland, they make a 408ci kit and something alittle bigger as well! those ports work so well that they would cut the heads in sections and bolt them down onto the top of 300ci 6 cylinder dragsters back in the day!
