Hit And Run Driver Runs Over Merced Trick-Or-Treaters

MERCED -- A hit-and-run driver struck and killed two children as they left their aunt's house dressed up for Halloween, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities were seeking Luis Ceja, 26, of Merced, in the Saturday evening crash that left Carlos Chavez Jr., 9, and his stepsister, 18-month-old Miranda Maldonado, dead.

The children were standing in their aunt's yard when Ceja allegedly lost control of his 1994 Chevrolet pickup, veered off the road, struck a traffic sign, a pole, a curb and another truck before hitting the children, said CHP Officer Shane Kensey.

Ceja allegedly abandoned the truck and fled on foot. CHP officers and deputies from the Merced County Sheriff's Department were not able to catch him.

Family members said Carlos died immediately. Miranda, who had just learned to walk, died hours later at a local hospital.

"They were young and weren't supposed to die like that," said their aunt, Hortensia Maldonado, 26. "If anyone knows where he (Ceja) is, they should come forward."
