Ive gotta take a mechanical aptitude test here for a job. Anyone have to take one recently? If so, can someone recommend a book or something to study from?

I took a mechanical aptitude test to become a Sheet metal worker. If it is the same test there is a book , I went to a local book store and had them look up Mechanical aptitude test.I was almost the test word for word. This was almost ten years ago but it is worth a try.

Do you know how competitive it is to get this job? The last class they hired 8 people out of 3,000 applicants. Its not about passing the test, its about scoring higher than the other people taking it.

what kind of job is it? operator, mechanic, maintenance? if you are somewhat smart or know how to wrench, you should be ok. the operator test also has chemistry stuff. refineries seem pretty desperate for people with some of the new people i'm seeing. if your dad has been around a while, he should be able to help you out there may be 3000 applicants, but only a few hundred get invited to take the test, most of those people bomb it. then if there is another test, maybe 100 will do that. then like 50 get to interview and it helps that your dad works there if you get to the interview. just like any other place, its all about who you know

The job title is refinery technician. My pops is somewhat of a supervisor there. If I can pass the test I can hopefully get hired. They do pretty well there, I believe max out at like $37/hr.
BTW I went out and got the #1 book that DAG threw up on the link. [ August 02, 2007, 03:56 PM: Message edited by: adower ]

$37 is pretty low compared to the other trades.

I'm not knocking it. I'm sure it's a good trade , I just think they should make a little more.

Wow, thats really good. Do you have to join the union to be a sheet metal worker? Is there over-time available? I know almost everyone clears 100k at the refinery my pops works at with very little OT.
