ReprintPrint Email Font Resize Owner of 22 Midas shops quits business to settle lawsuit By Josh Richman Oakland Tribune Posted: 01/25/2010 10:30:32 AM PST Updated: 01/25/2010 11:45:56 AM PST
He owned more than a dozen Midas auto repair shops in the Bay Area, but all that Maurice Irving "Mike" Glad touched is now turning to something decidedly other than gold.
Glad, of Modesto, has agreed to sell all of his 22 California shops, leave the auto-repair business and pay $1.8 million to settle a lawsuit claiming he bilked customers for unneeded repairs, state Attorney General Jerry Brown announced Monday.
Midas International Corp. will buy and continue operating all of Glad's shops, while Glad will be permanently barred from seeking or holding any license or registration issued by the state Bureau of Automotive Repair, or running any business requiring such a license or registration.
"For years, Glad ran a bait-and-switch scam, in which he deceptively lured customers into his Midas shops with cheap brake specials, then charged them hundreds of dollars more for unnecessary repairs," Brown said in a news release. "Our settlement makes sure that Glad will never own or operate an auto repair shop in California again."
Glad's Midas shops include four in San Jose; three in Fresno; two each in Hayward, Fremont and Modesto; and one each in Campbell, Clovis, Concord, Dublin, Manteca, Merced, San Leandro, Turlock and Walnut Creek.
A four-year undercover investigation by the Bureau of Automotive Repair found Glad regularly advertised $79 to $99 brake specials at his Midas shops to draw in customers and then often charged another

In some cases, customers were charged hundreds of dollars more for repairs that were not needed or never performed. Brown, along with Alameda and Fresno County prosecutors, sued Glad in June in Alameda County Superior Court.
The state had sued Glad for similar violations in 1989, leading to an injunction barring his shops from performing unnecessary repairs, charging for services not performed, or using scare tactics to convince customers to purchase unnecessary parts and services. The Bureau of Automotive Repair launched its recent investigation to monitor Glad's compliance with that previous injunction, sending agents posing as customers into his stores; they had more than 35 incidents, involving 105 violations, in which shop managers, mechanics and employees made false or misleading statements to pressure customers into purchasing unnecessary parts and services.
Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Scott Patton said Monday that his office is "very satisfied with the result."
