experience? none other then a few ride alongs. ive taken fire tech 1 a few years ago, hazmat first resopner operations and ill have my emt b certification by the beginning of the season. ill probably have more certs by then too like swift water operations and whatever else ican get my hands on.

i didnt think you had to have much for their seasonal positions?

With the way the state is its harder to get a seasonal position. What you can do is go to each station and talk to the captains. Get you're name out there. You can always go the federal route, we hire with no experience just be in very good running and hiking shape. I don't even think calfire pts but that's just from what I've experienced with working with them on fires.

I thought I was in good shape when I got in. I weighted 230 with 10% bodyfat and I just finished my 3rd season and I weight 190 now. I lost muscle mass for sure with all the running and hiking especially on a handcrew. Next year I am repelling out of a helicopter on the Tahoe Helitack. If you wanna know if you're in good shape see if you can run the mile and a half in under 11:40, be able to do more than 7 pullups, 25 situps and 25 pushups. If you can do more than those numbers and be faster than 1140 then you're in good shape. They will still hire you if you can't do all that because you will improve.

That's not the requirements for anything except being "considered" to be a smokejumper. For anything besides jumping you just need to pass the packtest but to be considered in ok/good shape I would follow that and being able to do that stuff will give you a better chance of being hired especially on a hotshot/handcrew. The better shape you're in the better season you'll have as well

Yeah I have been thinking about jumping. My assistant captain on my crew jumped for 3 years and my captain did for a year. My old captain on the engine jumped. I also know a retired BC for Calfire that hs told me if I want to jump he is good friends with the North OPS jumper Commander and would get me in. I think I need to be in a little better shape. From this season my knee has been hurting like hell lately. I think I pulled a legiment cause I can still hike and run it just swells up

Is Matt McHugh still teaching that class at CRC? Good luck with UCDFD, that would be a cush position.

Start meeting captains around March, April is when they start the hiring process and you usually start work in May.
